Great casual restaurant in the Hotel Roanoke. The lobby bar is also great and I had a terrific cocktail there (Virginia Vardier, maybe?) with super service and a very chill vibe. This review will focus on the actual restaurant, where I had lunch with my husband and our friend. It was quiet the day we were there so we got a lot of personal attention. We started with unsweetened iced teas and then since we weren't starved, we ordered some appetizers to share. We had: -deviled eggs (good but the filling was too solid and cold...I like the yellow to be a little creamier and light); -fried cauliflower-the star of the show; it tasted almost like a sweet Korean fried chicken; -Butternut squash salad- also delicious, with nicely roasted butternut squash chunks and a really good dressing; -Pimento cheese dip- excellent dip served with toast. Pimento cheese isn't much of a thing in NYC where I live so I've been trying it every time I see it in Roanoke. We really liked everything we had and the service was so nice. Our server was Angela and she was a delight! We had the Hearth Pumpkin salad & loved it. I had the Reuben (lotsa meat) with a side of mashed sweet potatoes that was awesome.. we fought over that. Overall a beautiful space with solid food. We ordered food from The Pine Room at the pool. The pool was overrun wtih visitors so it took awhile to order and I felt bad that the server had to keep sprinting back and forth from the pool to the Pine Room. The star for me was the pimento burger, it was juicy and flavorful. We also got the brucetta and it was more like a thick toast, than what you would normally think of as brucetta. It was flavorful, but super garlicky. The Bloody Mary was okay, I totally get having to use plastic due to the pool, but I still appreciate a spiced rim and toothpick with some olives. The bar itself is striking and is a showpeiece for the Hotel Roanoke. Defineitly a convient and pretyt tasty spot to dine at if you are styaing at the hotel. read more

One evening, after attending a function at the Roanoke Civic Center with a friend of mine, we came to the Pine Room for a late night snack, and I was very impressed with the place, the homemade fruit pie, and the service we received from our waiter Penny. Today, I decided to return to taste the food in the menu and catch another glimpse of the superb service I was able to experience on that late night snack occasion. After having made a reservation for 6:15pm on a Friday evening, I arrived at the Hotel Roanoke and walked over to the Pine Room. When I arrived, the host welcomed me with a warm greeting, and my server from the last time I ate at the Regency Room, Ben, who happened to also be there chatting, also greeted me, remembering that I now was a member of the Dogwood Club, and the amazing service he had given me last time at the Regency Room concluding with the making of a Banana Foster for my dessert. I was taken to a nice table at the center and close to the open kitchen of the main dining area. From there, I was able to see Chef Erin and all her kitchen staff cooking the food right before your eyes. It was a pleasant surprise to find out that my server this time was the same server that we had on that late night that I talked about at the beginning of this review: Penny. She greeted me with a warm welcome as usual and explained to me some of the items of the menu I asked about. I finally ordered the Caesar Salad to start with, and the Slow Roasted Pork Shank as my main course. I'm used to having bread with my meals, so after me asking, she brought me a dish with toasts that had a cheesy flavor. While I waited for the food, I watched Chef Erin and all her staff cooking in the kitchen and the intense fire coming out of an oven they had there where they cooked the freshly made pizzas. My Caesar salad tasted amazingly delicious, like very few I've tasted before. And the Pork Shank looked wonderful and tasted even better. What an extraordinary dining experience. And to top it off, I had the Baked Freeform Fruit Pie as dessert, with Honey ice cream and Caramel on top. I highly recommend this restaurant to all as a place with a relaxed yet elegant ambiance, where you can eat a variety of fresh and amazingly prepared foods, served by excellent servers who make you feel at home and very special at the same time. One of the restaurants in the hotel. Very nice place and it was nice enough out to sit outside. Not a fan of the chairs but it was nice. Also they have really good heaters so don't be afraid to take a table there even if it is cold. We started with Pickled deviled eggs. Delicious! So well prepared and presented. My main was the 'Kraut-chi' burger. Delicious! The kimchi and sauerkraut combo really worked. Deb had the Shrimp Alfredo pasta. It was delicious. Large portion too. The patio seating is delightful to watch everyone checking out or checking in and comfortable. There is an access ramp and elevator for wheelchairs. The patios are comfortable and spacious also offering views of downtown. The service is quick and friendly. The food is consistently delicious and changes with the season offering opportunity to go frequently and have something different. read more

Wow blown away by the unique, glamorous bar set up here. There's amazing zodiac art on the ceiling with the Roanoke star in the center of the golden fixture of the bar. Really a great spot! Especially around the holidays and you can explore the hotel which has a tree decoration contest set up which benefits charity. Now to the drinks and food. There was a holiday list which we ordered from. My eggnog was quite tasty with nutmeg on top. The two I came with had ordered the mistletoe Moscow mule. They said it was okay. I recommend ordering bites to share so you can sample several things among your group. We had the crispy cauliflower which was astounding, the bartender complimented our order saying it was a popular item. We also split the mushroom pizza which was also delicious. We were able to walk into the bar and take a seat as the dinner room was fully booked. Plenty of bar top and personal seating in the bar. Not a good experience. ordered a couple of apps which came out promptly. Dinner was a couple of cheeseburgers. Waitress did not hit Enter apparently. 90 minutes later burgers came out well done! Not medium rare. Waitreas and manager were apologetic and did comp us for food. But they really should get their game together! read more

I came to the Pine Room for my birthday dinner, and what a great experience it was! We got the market board as a starter. This was the only part I found a bit lacking: it was smaller than I expected for the price, and I wish the meats had included salami or something more typical. However, the main dish was great. I ordered the pork shank, while the others in my party ordered a pizza and roasted chicken. Everyone enjoyed their dish thoroughly. For the pork shank in particular, it was cooked and seasoned perfectly, without any tough areas or unrendered fat, and I would absolutely order it again. Both the pork shank and the roasted chicken were very large, so if you order a signature dish, remember to bring a strong appetite! The final dish of the night was the baked freeform fruit pie. A welcome twist on the classic apple pie with vanilla ice cream, it was a great way to end the meal. As a part of the hotel Roanoke, the service in the Pine room was excellent-- our server was attentive and helpful; I have no complaints at all. The ambience is welcome, albeit slightly unusual: it's a somewhat casual restaurant in a nice hotel, and when I went there, patrons were wearing anything from T-shirts to suits. Overall, I was very impressed with the Pine Room, and I will certainly be back. If you're looking for a nice dinner, the signature dishes are phenomenal. read more

We stayed at the hotel on our way up to DC for Spring Break. The hotel was beautiful and our upgraded room was great! We had dinner at the Pine Room, the server was great at first, but our food took forever and her initial attentiveness seemed to go away the longer the food took. The dinner was pretty good, can't really complain too much, but my wife and kid both got flatbread pizzas and my daughters was hot and my wife's was cold because it sat there forever waiting on the other flatbread. Overall, I'd say it mostly had to do with how late it was, we were the last table of the night it appeared, but I don't think it's a good excuse for it. read more

As a lifelong Roanoke resident I have held The Hotel Roanoke in high esteem, which is why we choose this spot for our special lunch. This however became a disappointing and shocking experience. I arrived at the restaurant with friends for a special holiday lunch and was told that they were short staffed. We were happy to wait and very understanding of the situation. Keep in mind we were celebrating and would have been happy to wait through several rounds of drinks but alas that was not the direction our experience went. 45 minutes after being seated my drink order was still not out, and no one had bothered to even check in on us or speak to us about the situation. Then my food came by another server and still no drink. At that point I did politely ask to speak to a manager as I feel food arriving before beverages is something that should be addressed. Once the food arrived 2 entrees were extremely over cooked and one was still raw. When we attempted to talk to the manager again she curtly said she would take them off the bill and proceeded to stand at the order kiosk with the waitress and talk about how they didn't want to service our table. Shortly after the waitress began taking our plates (literally jerking them away) without asking if we were finished or if we wanted a box. For the finale of our celebration the manager and waitress finally spoke to us in a very confrontational exchange. The waitress was so inappropriate in her combative response the manager finally asked her to step away. I work with the public and understand how hard it can be to deal with grumpy and irritated clientele, but I was genuinely stunned to be told we were rude when we had gone beyond reasonable expectations to be kind and patient. Everything that happened could have been overcome simply by addressing the problem with us in a respectful manner rather than treating us like we were at fault for expecting minimal communication and respect. Sadly the Hotel Roanoke is no longer a place I consider of the same caliber as I did before this experience. read more

So you've been looking up on the hill on the north side of the river at the big, imposing, stodgy-looking-maybe old hotel, saying to yourself, "NAH, too fancy." or "Eh - looks like somewhere my grandfather would go." But you should go there. I mean, you're not TOTALLY wrong; it is kinda fancy, though most lunchers were wearing shorts on the hot day in August my wife and I went there. No one looked at us cross-eyed because we were a little damp and disheveled from walking around downtown all morning in jeans and tees. Now, it's not cheap - wife and I got two entree salads and paid just short of $50 with a generous tip, so don't just show up with the fam expecting to get out of there for that kind of money. But I'd say a pretty good value given the quality. Bring your Significant Other or mom or good friend for a nice lunch and leave happy. Stodgy? Only on the topmost surface; there's some smiling mischief underneath that veneer. Yah, it's old and antique-y and you could be forgiven if your first impression is that you should be smoking a cigar and leaning back in a leather chair somewhere in the corner with squinty eyes and wide-spread legs laughing occasionally like, "HWAH, HWAH" at the foibles of the masses, but - NatGeo on TV. Puffins! There are puffins on the TV! Oh, and crabs doing crabby crab things. What fun! And the plates. Not food service plates - oh, no. Mismatched, nice, comfortable porcelain and stoneware. More pretend stodgy with lots of big winks. "We know what we should look like," says the restaurant, "but we've decided a little mild subversion is a good thing, don't you?" (Wink!) Same with the menu. The actual physical menu looks like it should be nothing but things like 73-pound Porterhouse, Petit Filet of Filet for the Missus, and Steak Ice Cream for dessert. Yes, there's steak, and the big dude there with his family (all in shorts and play dresses) looked to be enjoying the heck out of his AND it smelled heavenly. But the menu is actually filled, again, with modern, creative, even slightly subversive offerings that we had truly some trouble choosing between. But we chose well. My wife got a Chicken Cobb Sandwich. She loved it. I snuck a piece of her chicken. Tender, juicy, very verry tasty. I got the Steak Salad. Yah, OK, steak. Steak! Sue me! It was yummy! It was really good! Believe it was flank steak and advertised that way, so it was (as my dad used to say) "chewin' meat", but NOT tough - just wonderfully done to my order (medium), with perfect tooth; very nicely balanced with greens and an outstanding dressing. Get that! Service was very good, as well. Attentive yet not annoying, with the team helping Catrina seamlessly (thanks, all y'all!). Everyone had a twinkle in their eye, and there were a few subtle joshes between them and us that were just fun. And it really is a beautiful place. Stodgy? Nah. Beautiful wood, pretty furniture, cool big bar; clean and efficient yet warm and friendly. Certainly not trendy, but a soft, comfy, and familiar update on what your great-uncle - who should have left you at least PART of his fortune except he didn't really have that much as you found out when you were an adult - would have liked. This was my first visit to the Pine Room and 1882 Lobby Bar although I was on a return visit to Roanoke after growing up there. The bar is elegant yet simple and unpretentious with a beautiful rounded bar, a gorgeous night sky painted ceiling, and provided me with one of the best cocktails I have tasted anywhere- their version of a rye old fashioned made with Basil Hayden dark rye. Delicious! The Pine Room is beautifully appointed, again elegant but informal. Penny, our food server was amazing! Gracious, friendly, attending to every need including needs we hadn't even thought of! For an appetizer, we all shared the crispy cauliflower. Amazing! Penny helped provide us the recipe, so we're ready to try making this at home (although I'm sure it won't be nearly as good.) Our group's entrees included the pork shank with smoked collards and sweet potatoes (a big hit!), shrimp and scallop risotto- delicious!, and a ribeye grilled to perfection. Desserts included a free form tart made with apples, blueberries, and pears, and topped with honey vanilla ice cream, and a flight of small cheesecakes. We were a group of old friends (and spouses) gathering and renewing our ties after too many years apart. In many settings, the food would have taken a distant second to the stories and reminiscences, but here in Hotel Roanoke's Pine Room and 1882 Lobby Bar, the food, drink, and spectacular service were a perfect match for a memorable evening! read more

New residents in town-- this was a first visit to the Pine Room for us. Skipped the appetizers and had the "Hotshot Eastbound" cocktails (good), a mushroom/swiss burger and pork shank entree. Peach cobbler for dessert. Food was very very good, prices were reasonable, and it ended up being under $100 even including 20% tip. Burger was perfectly cooked medium-rare, and pork shank and accompanied veggies, potatoes were scrumptious. Our server Angela was great: personable and informative. read more

I am appalled at the horrific experience I had at the Pine Room. As a local, I have frequented the bar and restaurant for decades. I went for a special holiday lunch with close friends. When we arrived we placed drink orders. Over the course of ONE HOUR we politely asked the status of our drinks. Approx 30 mins into our visit we placed our order. Finally after the ONE HOUR wait, our drinks and food arrived simultaneously. The food was atrocious. The orders were inaccurate. We could not get our waitress's attention to rectify the situation. We saw her speaking with another employee and rolling her eyes at us. We asked to speak with the manager and when we did the waitress said we were rude so she would not serve us. We were shocked! We were polite the whole time! I cannot believe the manager allowed the waitress to speak with us this way. I will NEVER set foot in this restaurant again and I will make sure all my family, friends, acquaintances, and business associates know about this experience and ensure they do not patronize the bar or restaurant. Truly abhorrent behavior by both waitress and manager! I would leave a negative star review if possible. read more

For the price we paid it really took away the wonderful ambiance. When I asked the waitress when the dirty items were going to be removed and that it was bothering me. It was a cool dark rainy evening, the type you imagine when you think of a classic nior film. Dim lights and soft jazz music playing above the quiet exchanging of laughs and whispers between hotel guests.... A great classy hotel pub to match an amazing historical and classy hotel. A perfect balance of lively yet relaxing, the perfect place to kick back after being on my feet all day. They have multiple TVs on closed caption and a couple couches if you really want to it back and soak it in. The menu is bit on the small side but the variety is on point. The Meal: Chicken Quesadilla with a crisp Hendricks & tonic Pleasantly surprised! Typically a small dish quesadilla will leave me wanting more but I'm actually full! Great flavor and and came out hot. The drink was perfectly strong and meal even came with a bonus side of house cooked seasoned chips which added a great touch of something salty with my drink after I finished! Went here for ladies night last week - so fun ! Super clean, 'distanced' & chic atmosphere. Our server was fantastic. We shared just about every 'shared plate' option on the menu -- our preferred way to dine. Every dish came out 'right'. I pass on meat dishes and they offered plenty to satisfy --- holy mushroom toast! I had a dirty martini (a 3 out of 5) and we split a bottle of pinot noir. One of my favorite places to have a drink in Roanoke--classic, cozy, in a beautiful hotel. Just one complaint. The music is bad pop and club music. I get that they're trying to make this a more casual space in an otherwise elegant hotel, but musically, they're missing the mark by a mile. Maybe try some contemporary singer songwriter stuff--think Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, and Father John Misty. If they want something more energetic, how about Nathanial Rateliffe or Durand Jones. There are lots of options that would still be casual but not make it sound like you're in a Hot Topic at the mall. read more

Inside Hotel Roanoke, this pub is on the right. It's warm, spacious and cozy. My server was so awesome at juggling random guests like me at solo tables, and a huge company party that was indulging in their happy hour. By recommendation, I had a wrap. It was full of spinach, cheese, chicken, onions, and some sorta spicy condiment. Huge and very, very delicious. It came with a side of kettle cooked chips and apple slaw. The apple slaw was the best! And to think, I almost opted out. I also ordered the bread pudding which could've been more moist, but the flavor was good. Ate there tonight for the first time since they renovated. The food and service was great. The reason for the lower rateing is the sliders I ordered were spicey and I have a sensive tongue and would have not ordered if I had know they were spicey. The menus said smoked chicken and peach slaw. Also the flatbread was just bland. Needed more tomatoes and cheese or salt. The bourbon cocktails were wonderful also the beet salad and mushroom toast. I wanted to like this place since I've heard great things but that just wasn't the case for us tonight. We were sat in front of the kitchen, which was fun, but we didn't love everything we saw. I still gave 3 stars because we did really like the cauliflower app and the pimento cheese fries. Very tasty! We then tried the duck and fig flatbread and the "warmed" chicken sliders. The flatbread had a good flavor, however, it was so overdone and crunchy that it was crumbling in our hands with each bite. We would've asked for another but our waitress didn't come back for 10-15 minutes. She did take it off our bill, which was much appreciated. The chicken sliders were not good at all. It was dark meat chicken (weird), cut up peaches that were hard that was made into a slaw, all on a cheddar biscuit thing. The whole thing was cold and didn't have a good flavor at all. The worst part about our meal was being able to see how long the dishes sat under the hot lamps before being brought to their tables. We timed one dish of mahi tacos with fries that sat there for 15+ minutes before it left the counter. And not only that, we saw a server swipe a fry right off that plate and eat it as he walked away so we thought surely that's not going to a table? Well, it did, and we were pretty disgusted.
