It's situated near Splash point and not far from the paddling pool near the Aquarena, it's a perfect place to take the children after you've spent the day at the beach. A Summer hangout, its seating area extends to the pebbles. Coast Cafe is one of the few cafes allowed right on the beach. Organic ice cream, illy coffee, tea in china cups, cakes and foccacia sandwiches are served. I can vouch for the delicious ice cream but have not tried any of the other food. The baked goods made in-house include the flap jacks, which I have yet to try. They have a bunch of other cakes and cookies that are quite delicious as well. The foods stuffs are very solid - always tasty and fresh. I am on a little cleanse right now that doesn't allow me to have those crappy oils (sunflower, canola, etc)... and when asked, they told me that they use just a little olive oil when warranted. Well, let me tell you - I feel great after eating the modified English breakfast: poached egg, tomato, mushrooms, and small side salad. They are so nice to not put up a fuss when I don't order from the menu - and the price is reasonable too. The bathroom is clean, the staff friendly, the music a bit repetitive, the coffee amazing, and the ambiance a little too cliche. This is my go-to in Worthing for good breakfast and good coffee.

The food and produce here is of top quality and there's so much to choose from, I'd highly recommend scribbling a vague list down or you'll end up spending an absolute fortune! The cold meats are un-believable (try the Parma ham with gorgonzolla cheese on focaccia bread) and there's tons of olives and anti-pasti treats to get your taste buds jumping for joy. They do organise special 'taster' events so keep an eye on the website or listen to splash FM radio for notification.

And although Worthing seems to have a wealth of cafes and fast food restaurants, they are all either take away only, old school greasy spoons or not worth visiting. Or so I thought until I came across Madisons (quite by accident). I got a very warm and friendly greeting, ordered my food, which turned out to be excellent, helped myself to one of their complementary newspapers and relaxed in the very laid back and unhurried atmosphere. I have visited twice now and fully intend to be a regular visitor.

It's not very long and there's not that much to do on it, but I just love walking on a pier. There's a small art instalment, a very stuffy arcade with no a/c, and a restaurant at the end, newly renovated with big glass windows. You can go fish on the metal scaffolding hanging off the pier and hope to get lucky. No cost to enter, toilets by the street.

Worthing Pier is the most notable attraction on Worthing's long but otherwise rather quiet…read moreseafront. It is a grade-II listed building. Like many piers, it has had an eventful past. Built in 1862, the pier partly collapsed in a great storm in 1913, isolating the pavilion at the seaward end. The land-side North Pavilion was built by Adshead & Ramsey in 1926 after the Borough Council acquired the pier, but disaster struck again in 1933 when a fire destroyed the original pier-end South Pavilion. However, the replacement Art Deco building of 1935 and the smaller central Pavilion are among the best preserved of their type. The pier is 300m (984ft) long, and there are glazed art-deco style windbreaks along its whole length. Like the rest of Worthing, the attractions along the pier are low-key: the land-end pavilion is a 1,000-seat theatre used for concerts and summer shows, and includes a small café; the Central Pavilion is used as an amusement arcade, and the South Pavilion is used as a nightclub (returning from this at 3am on a stormy winter's night, after a few bevvies, must be some experience). There are a few kiosks along its length, selling the requisite fish & chips and ice creams. The seaward end still has its landing stages, and is visited several times a year by coastal passenger ships such as the Paddle Steamer Waverly and the MV Balmoral, on short south-coast pleasure trips. For the rest of the year, is pier is busy with dozens of anglers of all ages. The pier is currently undergoing a 15-year restoration programme, and in 2006 won the 'Pier of the Year' award for this work. Diving and jumping from the pier is forbidden. However, in July 2008 the annual 'Birdman' event was due to be held here (having moved here from Bognor Regis pier). This involves people in costumes and crazy 'flying machines' jumping, running or cycling off the end, with prizes for the furthest 'flight' and the wackiest outfits. However, the event had to be cancelled at the last minute, thanks to the unseasonably stormy weather. Let's hope things are kinder in 2009

Subway market themselves as the healthy alternative to the other fast food on the market. You can choose between a number of different breads freshly baked while you watch. You can buy subs from the menu or simple choose what you want. I've had the salads where you can make it up from the selection of salad vegetables and meat and choose a dressing. Good if you have limited time and need something healthier quickly.

Open in the day, it has a few tables outside and a large table inside that you have to share with other punters, it usually means you end up chatting and making friends. The interior decoration is quirky, hippy with lots of knickknacks around. There's always newspapers or books lying around to read, good if you are on your own. Selection of sandwiches, cooked lunches, daily specials and cooked breakfasts. Coffee is freshly made from ground coffee beans and carrot cake is rich and satisfying. There's no place like this in Worthing. A little secret gourmet cafe.
