My favorite restaurant in Tulum and I think one of the best restos I've been to in Mexico (better IMO than Sud777 in Mexico City and I'd say close to Quintonil in my level of love!) you can feel and taste the love and care and passion they have here... so nice and reminds me of the old tulum compared to the super commercialized stuff that's everywhere now.
Reminds me a lot of Matia in the Pacific Northwest, actually, in their farm fresh and homemade preparation (they make gnocchi and tacos to order!) but super refined and unusual tastes as well as amazing and super friendly service. Everything is good and creative too - mains, desserts and drinks!
I found the OGs since it's two blocks away from my Airbnb where I'm working remotely for a month in Tulum. I went for the first time yesterday for breakfast (birria quesadillas and a latte), came back for dinner (tacos, bone marrow and golden grass cocktail) and then came back for dinner again today (the AMAZING short rib, corn cheesecake and two super refreshing cocktails - the gin and matcha one as well as vermouth with lime sorbet which was my first time w sorbet in a cocktail - delicious!)
I plan to eat the entire menu if I can over my remaining time here, it's just soooo good.
What do I love -
- staff is so friendly, since I'm just one person I usually sit at the chefs bar in the back and watch them make the food
- the chefs took me on a tour of the kitchen - SUPER clean btw - and explained how they make masa and tortillas!
- perfect pairing recommendations of cocktails and food!
- the short rib is cooked for 24 hours and falls off the bone / your fork - w an amazing mole sauce and green onion bulbs in activated charcoal tempura and wood fire roasted kale... sooooo good
- the corn cheesecake is also amazing, a great story of being made w local farm ingredients and with an amaranth crust! Soooo unique and delicious
- the bone marrow also is soooo good, wow! I don't know, their flavors are just so unique and spot on
You can tell this place is something special... it's kinda an under the radar gem that you discovered. the last time I had this feeling is when I went to Matia right after they opened and now, 2 years later it's near impossible to get a table and they're on the New York Times Too 50 best restaurants list in 2022!!! Check it out while it's still somewhat under the radar...I know it's gonna blow up. read more
