The Cedar Ford Covered Bridge comes from Shelby County Indiana and now spans the Beanblossom Creek…read morein Washington County, connecting North and Old Maple Groves Roads. The bridge was originally built by the Kennedy Brothers in 1885 but was dismantled and stored. It has since been rehabilitated and recovered. It replaces the Smith Truss Covered Bridge that was built on this spot in 1871 but destroyed by arson in 1976 and never rebuilt. The arsonists were eventually caught. This is an active vehicle bridge and the signs indicate a ten foot clearance with a weight limit of ten tons. My Sprinter van is just under ten feet and well under ten tons so I drove across with caution and had no issues. Very cool to be able to drive a covered bridge, a technology that is just more fun and more awesome than any concrete monstrosity out there. Located in the center of the (city? town? village?) of Nashville, this marker points out the artist…read morethat pretty much put it on the map. There is street parking nearby and you should not miss the museum a few blocks away. The marker is on two sides with the front reading, "Photographer, artist, and newspaper columnist Frank Hohenberger moved to Nashville in 1917. Through his black and white, large format photographs, he documented the residents, artists, daily life, traditions, and natural beauty of Brown County. From 1923-1954, he wrote an Indianapolis Star column, "Down in the Hills O' Brown County" that helped popularize the area." And the reverse, "Hohenberger took over 15,000 photographs and negatives during his career, including "The Liar's Bench," one of his best-selling prints. He was commissioned for projects across Indiana and in other states and delivered many illustrated lectures on his work. His internationally popular photographs have been preserved at the Lilly Library, Indiana University." This is marker number 7.2019.1 and was erected in 2019 by the Indiana Historical Bureau, Peaceful Valley Heritage Preservation and Brown County Community Foundation. You don't have to enter the park to view the bridge. It was built in Putnam County in 1838 and was moved 130 miles to here Brown County in 1932. It would otherwise have been demolished to make way for a more modern bridge. This bridge is the oldest covered bridge still standing in Indiana and the only two lane covered bridge. The bridge span is 110 feet and no, it did not have clearance for my Sprinter van. If you're planning on visiting the park in an RV, you need to use the other entrance to the west. Oolitic and nearby Bedford, Indiana were thriving communities during the early-mid 1900's due to limestone industry. The quarries in this region produce high quality limestone due to the unique geology. The statue of Joe Palooka is a product of that time. Joe Palooka was a popular comic book hero back during WWII created by Ham Fisher. The Indiana Limestone Association adopted Joe as a mascot as he was considered a "Cornerstone of Freedom" and carved his likeness into 20,000 pounds of limestone. The 10' statue was dedicated by Ham Fisher on June 14, 1948 in the town of Bedford. Over the years the statue has moved around due to vandalism and other factors. Today, he stands outside the City Hall in Oolitic. He wears a boxing cape and has the chiseled features of a 20th century superhero. The statue shows a little damage from hail and vandalism but stands tall as part of Indiana's history. The City Hall is a modest building with a welcoming front porch. Local residents can pay bills and find information here. There is street parking directly out front. The building is accessible through an entrance in the rear. I loved seeing and learning about Joe and recommend a visit.

if you traveled down to nashville, indiana through morgantown, you've probably passed by this…read morefamous ginkgo tree. the ginkgo tree in morgantown has a notable and touching history dating back to the civil war. the tree was planted by a former pow from the civil war, ruben c. griffith. according to griffith, he watched a tiny ginkgo tree grow through a crack outside his prison. he found inspiration in the tree. after his release, he returned home and became a prominent physician. he planted a ginkgo tree outside the home he built in 1894, where the tree has thrived for over 100 years. the tree was placed on the national registry in 2006. a plaque stands next to the inspirational tree. the plaque reads: the legend of the ghinko tree ruben c. griffith was born in a log cabin on this lot in 1845. at the age of 17 he enlisted with the union army only to be captured one year later and incarcerated in the legendary andersonville prison in georgia. from his small prison window he watched a tiny tree grow out of a dry crack in the earth. it gave him hope that he too might survive. having seen the dire need for physicians during the war, upon his release he returned home and became a prominent morganton physician. in 1894 he tore down the family cabin & built this house to use as his residence & office. in 1908, the governor of indiana commissioned him to return to andersonville to erect a memorial for the 630 indiana soldiers who died at andersonville. upon his return he carried with him a ghinko sapling which he planted in this spot. unfortunately in 1910 while observing fireworks from an upstairs window dr griffith fell to his death. this house and tree was added to the national registry in 2006. i can't help but love these small town stories that give insights into our history. the tree is inspirational and maybe the best reason to visit morgantown. there is free street parking near the tree.

Steel and Adolph Shulz discovered the beautiful rolling hills, creeks and natural settings in the small town during the early 1900's. Other famous artists soon made Nashville their canvas and homes including Carl Graf, L. O. Griffith, Marie Goth, Ida Shulz and others. Nashville's growth as an artist colony continued with rail lines improving access to the area. Today, many modern artists are still attracted to the guilds and artist associations based in Nashville. The galleries attract art enthusiasts from all over. The town itself, is a tourist town known for the local art, the availability of cabin and camping facilities, charming restaurants and quaint streets filled with independent locally owned shops. The historic home of T. C. Steel and Brown County State Park are also a nearby attractions. Fall is a peak visitation season with the hills colorful by the changing leaves. As an art lover, I've been a regular visitor for 20 years. I have a couple favorite galleries and restaurants that I visit. I love the drive down from the city through the rolling hills. Visiting the shops and restaurants is mostly by foot. Parking in the town is challenging during busy seasons. There is some free street parking, which tends to fill quickly in the morning. Paid parking ranges from $5 - $10 for the day. Many businesses do not offer public restrooms, but there are several dedicated facilities located around town. Maps of the walkable town are available at the Visitor's Center. Internet access in town is variable to none. Some businesses charge an up charge for the use of credit cards (so bring some cash). People are friendly and willing to provide assistance. Nashville is a perfect destination for a girls weekend or family get away. There is something for everybody.

I spoke to one of the owners of the shops and they were telling me that fall is a huge time for them make your plans soon, and make sure that you get your accommodations ahead of time.
