A wonderful addition to the west-side dining scene. The Lawrence has a lovely ambiance with tons of greenery inside. It's amazing how it does not get overly noisy like other restaurants in the area. The cocktail menu is fabulous. Food offerings are mostly twists on traditional dishes. Many times they excel at elevating flavors, but service can be slow and inattentive. It is variable. The menu does seem to change frequently, so if you find something you enjoy, it might not be there next time. read more

We came here to celebrate our anniversary and left feeling a little disappointed. When we were seated, our waitress asked if we were celebrating anything. We told her it was our anniversary, and she said she had a dessert she was going to bring us. Unfortunately, that never happened, which was a bit of a letdown. For dinner, my husband ordered the salmon, and while the salmon itself was good, the risotto was served cold. I ordered a Caesar salad and was surprised to find spinach mixed into it. That's not what I expect in a traditional Caesar salad, so it was a little odd. Overall, the experience wasn't terrible, but there were several small details that added up and made what should have been a special anniversary dinner feel underwhelming. Super cool concept dining in a barn, and the food was great! Unfortunately, the experience was ruined by inconsistent policies and terrible service. We were told the $65 buffet was the only option for graduation weekend, but then watched other tables ordering ribs, burgers, scallops, and other menu items all night. If it's buffet-only, it should apply to everyone. Our server, Selena, was almost nonexistent. Seriously she needs to find another job. We constantly waited for water refills, dirty plates piled up on our table, there was no drink service, and we eventually had to ask the manager for our bill after waiting forever. For a $450 dinner for 5 people, the service should have matched the price point. Sadly, what should have been a special Purdue graduation celebration ended up being a disappointment. New restaurant inside an old barn that was restored and built on site on Purdue campus. The inside is truly beautiful with the tall ceiling and all the hand cut wood. Service was first rate and our water glasses never ran empty. We had the goat cheese appetizer that was so creamy and savory. They had a cool little menu deal where you can get half a sandwich and soup or salad. We all loved our meals and enjoyed conversation in a nice booth space. Our waitress was extremely pleasant and present. The parking was a bit of a pickle because the private lot was full and all the surrounding streets have pay parking through an app. We opted for hiking a ways to avoid downloading the app. read more

For a first visit not even quite a full week after opening we were quite impressed! Great atmoshphere of a relocated turn-of-century barn from the Beck's farm. This was a GREAT IDEA and tells a great Indiana story. Food and drinks were great -- baked goat cheese was amazing as we're the brussel sprouts! I'm a bit of a rib and sprout snob (ok goat cheese too) and nothing disappointed. I would like to know about the prep on the ribs out of curiosity... We will be back for sure and sit at the bar when able. I reserved a high-top but we chose the bar as that's how we roll. I don't think the people have their tables straight yet because there were multiple times a food/drink runner tried to bring us something we didn't order. I ordered ribs. They were fall off the bone, but the glaze on them was so nasty I couldn't eat them. My friends let me try their meals. Gnocchi was gooey. Not sure if it's supposed to be, but I didn't like it. Steak frites were good. Good fries and aioli. The crab fritters were amazing though. So delicious and cooked perfectly. Nailed it! Dinner at the Lawrence was excellent! It's a beautifully new built barn, very modern and comfortable. There are a few TVs around but it does not give sports bar vibes. Our service was excellent. We started with the meatballs and cocktails before moving to entrees. I couldn't make up my mind and got no help from our server who reassured me that all of the dishes are really good. My friend and I both had beef and noodles. It does have a tiny bit of spice, but I wouldn't call it hot or even mild. It was the perfect yakisoba dish and transported me back to the yakisoba shack I stopped at in Japan. My friend who also ordered the beef and noodles had a tough time with the spice because any little bit seems to bother her, so just beware if you're sensitive to heat/spice. My other friend loved her steak frites. The margarita was perfect! Not too sweet or tart and I loved the tajine on the rim. The others loved their cocktails too. We opted to skip desserts as we had brought desserts for each other, but I have no doubt their desserts are delicious. The Lawrence really nailed it for us. We were seated outside when it was breezy and had a nice experience. The staff was very friendly. The food is amazing. I got an old fashion and pork chops. Friends got lemonade and salmon and cosmo with the chicken. Both were pleased with their food but they said my pork chops kicked ass. Second time here, same criticism for borderline cold food (communicated by private message). Great flavors, but they do not have serving temperatures and timing down. For the price you pay they need to get this right. First visit the whipped butter didn't melt on the rolls, the rolls were essentially room temperature. My pork chop had great flavor, but had cooled to an almost unacceptable temp. Sauce for the cauliflower on the outside edges was cold. Brussels sprouts had great flavor but were slightly cold. Second visit rolls were hot and awesome. Steak frites were barely acceptable for temp, cooked right but just almost cold from sitting. Scallops were the same, great flavor but just barely acceptable for serving temperature, the surrounding vegetables and sauce were cold, center of the dish was acceptable. Two salmon dishes and mushroom gnocchi were good, as was the bulgogi beef dish. Olive oil cake, cheese cake and sorbet were very good. Service was attentive on both visits and have no complaints (criticism of dish temps was communicated). Really hope they get this fixed, great dishes but will not continue to pay premium prices unless the temperatures are right. read more

We heard about this new restaurant on social media and we wanted to try it out. It is located on the west side of Purdue's campus near the airport. We look advantage of their lunch menu and it didn't disappoint. For appetizers, we shared the crab fritters and sweet potato rolls. For the main, one had a salad, another did a lunch pairing, a wrap and a sandwich. All delish! For dessert, we had the chocolate torte which was rich and great for anyone who is gluten free. Service was excellent, friendly and attentive. It is set in an old barn which was warm and inviting. There is a small parking lot but there is street parking nearby. Exquisite reformed barnyard turned posh farmers market paradise obscured with the all time below average food, us five guys dropped in for a dual birthday celebration. Desserts were hilariously tiny especially for the prices, an odd penny pinching pout for a city loaded up on excellent options like McGraws, Mountain Jacks, Red Seven, Black Sparrow, and Boomerangs yet these new campus food digs are addicted to a harsh diet! I don't get it. Why is the slice of cheesecake well less than half the size of a Buffalo Wild Wings cheesecake which costs half? This Cunningham restaurant group certainly is cunning. Dress everyone in black, hire the best Purdue freshman, and decorate the aura in bold rich dark academia to hide the massive cost cutting and sloppy chef skills. Now yes, here's the real issues. My scallops were cooked well, the only dish of our five to be fixed right. But look at that plate! A tiny great depression amount of food thrown together to get Gordon Ramsay swearing. The ribs and New York strip, far less, nothing special or at all worth the costs, Cheddars does both better. But the smash burger, oh my precious spice wars, were the lost here? The worst burger I've ever had, from the very birthday boy's lips, quoted to me yet again last night as we mused on The Lawrence. I didn't know a burger could be made wrong, literally some of the easiest tastiest ingredients to put together. Yet there it was, neither of the burgers were finished. We stopped by a few days before Valentines Day without a reservation. They were fully booked but accommodated us at the bar. This place is certainly beautiful inside and we found ourselves looking up at the barn ceilings a few times in awe of the size of the place. One day, I would like to see the rest of the massive building! Bar service was a bit slow/chaotic but given they had only been open about 10 days, totally understandable. The bar staff was incredibly friendly and when I did not like the drink I ordered, Cat happily made another without complaint. She was an absolute star! I ordered the Pineapple Daiquiri but it was so sour I couldn't drink it. No pineapple in this drink only pineapple rum lime juice and simple syrup. It needs rebalanced. The Pear 58 however was tasty. My husband's Old Fashioned was on point. Our Baked Goat Cheese appetizer was good. Topped with balsamic vinegar glaze AND meyer lemon made it, again, pretty sour. I found that I was picking around the condiments to get to the sweet onions and savory cheese though. Maybe my tastebuds were still recovering from the daiquiri? Nevertheless, we finished it as it was good. I ordered the Scallops for my main and my husband ordered the strip steak. The steak was cooked and seasoned well. The chard and potatoes were very tasty. My scallops were cooked perfectly, but at $36 for 3 scallops, I wouldn't order them again. The puréed carrot & horseradish was something new and I enjoyed that combination. However, the soy sauce dressing on the chard/roasted cauliflower was way too overpowering. The chocolate tart & ice cream rounded out our experience and soothed our palates from the rollercoaster of flavors. The building and decor are wonderful. Our drink order took over 45 minutes to arrive. Others that came in after received drinks and food before ours were delivered. Our table was located beside the service station despite a reservation two weeks before and we were constantly bumped by the staff and dealt with broken glass. The food was quite good, but one side came out cold. The management stopped in to address our concerns and were gracious. They said they were addressing the bar backlog in the near future. Unfortunately, we have had the same experience during our last three visits. Hence I really can't recommend the restaurant until they have appropriate bar staff. read more

The vibes were good, our service was great, and my food was amazing!! We made a reservation weeks in advance and were a little disappointed to be seated in the bar. After contemplating for a minute whether it was worth asking to move, my husband did kindly ask if we could sit in the dining room and they moved us no problem. We started with the sweet potato rolls. I thought they were good and the butter with honey was delicious! My husband thought they were so-so. I ordered the filet and it was the best I've ever had in town (better than boiler house prime!!). That demi glaze was SO good!The mashed potatoes were also incredible. My husband ordered the salmon and he thought it was good. Not worth writing home about, but it was good. We did glance at the dessert menu, but nothing really caught our eye. First, Sullivan did an amazing job answering our questions and keeping up with our drinks. The food was very good. Sullivan suggested the short rib grilled cheese: he was correct. It was great! The rolls came with hot honey butter. Yummy! Honey is from an urban provider in NYC. The desserts were equally good. Keep in mind, they are brand new. The kitchen was slow but the atmosphere made the welcoming environment make up for the kitchen timing issue. (Plus, we had no where to be exactly!) Apps: we've had the crab fritter (disappointed, doesn't seem fresh and can't taste crab), chilled shrimp were good (one wasn't cleaned and no horseradish or cocktail sauce), the harrissa meatballs honestly were a big let down you get like 6 but they were dry and kinda reminded me of pet kibble (they offered to take them off our bill since we only ate one which i didn't feel was necessary as Im the one that wanted to try something new and assumed that risk), the baked goat cheese was . Mains: the chicken is a bone in/skin on Thigh that was great, the pork chop is bone in and also straight . The short rib was great..... but reminded me more of pot roast, super moist and melt in your mouthy but no sticky edges that i love! My wife got a beet salad add grilled shrimp with no dressing/cheese/breadcrumbs which she enjoyed very much! Dessert: table next to us had 3 and i asked them for their fave (they had the olive oil cake, chocolate torte, and galette and like the OOC the best) tried the olive cake and thought it was ok, nice crispy edges of the cake and accoutrement were good. The Lawrence might be one of the best restaurants in the Greater Lafayette area. Wonderful, attentive service from hosts, servers, and management. A beautifully crafted menu of food and drinks, perfectly executed. Unique selections compared to the rest of the scene in Lafayette, with a good range of familiar homestyle dishes (with some twists) and new flavors. The sweet potato Parker house rolls are delicious with the hot honey butter, with the right amount of kick. The pork chop was perfectly cooked and a HUGE portion, paired with a roasted cauliflower that made a cauliflower hater steal multiple bites off her husband's plate. The steak frites was exceptional, with a huge serving of fries, delicious garlic aioli, and a 6oz steak with amazing garlic butter and demi glacé. Both cuts were cooked perfectly to our requests, and everything came out hot and fresh. The cocktails were tasty and strong, we tried three different ones. The Pear 38 was like a pear Martini that had a great tartness to it that complimented the sweetness of the rest of the drink. The Boiler Sling was refreshing and went down way too easy. The Classic Margarita was amazing, and is really just a classic margarita done well. We can't wait to come back for lunch and dinner, this place really might have it all! read more

By far the star of the meal were the sweat potato rolls, they were excellent. Everything else was lackluster to say the least. We ordered the steak frites medium and it came out closer to rare than medium rare. The salmon we ordered was supposed to be medium as well and it came out well done. This is my second trip to The Lawrence. The first time was lunch, and I was not too impressed with the food, but I only had soup and salad so I thought we'd try it again for dinner. Party of 7. Next to us was a party of 8 and a party of 12 and a party of 4. Our server was responsible for all of these tables which was an immediate concern and proved to be legitimate. Very long delays checking on us. We ordered goat cheese and Brussels with hummus for the table. Everyone loved the goat cheese...definitely the star of the night...an interestingly delicious combination of flavors with a bit of brightness from the citrus. Perfect! Entrees were steak frites, braised beef, a chicken parm type dish, ribs, salmon x2 and the crab cakes. Worst was the crab crakes...deep fried and overly fried with more breading than crab and they were cold. They were sent back and deducted from our bill. Everyone else described their food as mid at best. We really wanted to like it but the food just fell short. We had olive oil cake and creme brûlée for desert. The cake was good but a bit dry. The creme brûlée had a really delicious flavor with an excellent sugar crust but the creme was runny and not firm. We did a little poll and no one was interested in returning unless it was for wine and goat cheese. read more

We had a fantastic experience at The Lawrence. Our waitress was incredibly friendly, thoughtful, and attentive. The building is gorgeous inside with lots of fun information and details relating to the restaurant's mission and Indiana's farmhouse history. We were sat inside the main dining area, but there was ample patio space that I'm sure will be in use once the weather warms. The bathrooms were spacious and clean. My group had an array of items, all of which had good portions and were very tasty. The rolls in particular were something we fought over given how delicious they are. My only gripe is that the mocktail selection is minimal and most of the mocktails utilize alternatives to various alcohols (rum alternative, tequila alternative, etc.) rather than having any without. Personally was a little disappointed with that, but not enough to otherwise damper a fantastic new restaurant. Will definitely be back with more friends and family. read more
