The Tholstrup Law Firm, L.P - Richard J. Tholstrup, Attorney at Law

The Tholstrup Law Firm, L.P

(5 reviews)

Downtown, Fourth Ward

One Star Review We…read morefound Richard after searching extensively online for an attorney. He had a couple of good reviews (which is rare for attorneys), and at first, he seemed like the right choice. He came across as very nice, professional, and capable of handling our complex case. Unfortunately, everything went downhill after we paid him--upfront and even more than he originally asked for. From that point forward, Richard became dismissive, arrogant, and unresponsive. He constantly shut down my wife, ignored or failed to read our emails, and treated us with a cocky attitude. Despite the fact that we were supposed to be on the offensive, he left us feeling like we were always on the defensive. Even when the opposing side acted blatantly against the law, Richard said and did nothing. The most shocking issue was that Richard actually negotiated with the opposing counsel without our knowledge or consent and even sent us an email documenting decisions he made without our approval. That was completely unacceptable and a betrayal of trust. After reviewing our billing, we realized we had billed us over $22kwhile he did very little to help us. On top of that, he came up with excuses, including health reasons, to explain his lack of work. We later discovered through the state bar that Richard had previously lost his license for similar misconduct with another client--something we wish we had known before hiring him. To make matters worse, Richard seemed to work in sync with the opposing attorney, running up our legal bills while accomplishing nothing. We ended up having to write our own rebuttals for him, as he refused to execute even the basics. He was consistently rude to my wife, gave us the wrong advice, and ignored critical points in our case. In total, we invested over $22,000 in Richard, only to be left with no real progress and the need to hire a new attorney to start over. We will be submitting our experience and documentation to the state bar for review. Richard is a one-man show with no staff, no support, and no accountability. He does not listen, does not care, and does not fight for his clients once he gets paid. This has been one of the most disappointing and costly experiences of our lives. Avoid Richard completely. T Do your homework before you hire attorneys

Horrible attorney. He refused to actually review the information I provided him which resulted in a…read moreprotective order being granted against me. Had he listened instead of telling useless jokes the entire time my life would not have been ruined. This cost me money and so much time with my children. I regret the day I hired this man. Then to top it off he called me an angry bi*t$ to my face but of course he tried to mask it as another one of his jokes. He is so unprofessional. Do NOT EVER USE RICHARD FOR A DIVORCE. Not only will you lose, you will waste money and valuable time. He is too old. He needs to retire. He can't even remember simple details of a case nor does he even try. Trust me the older these attorneys get the more out of touch they are. Still debating if I should report him to the board for malpractice. I have so much proof that he didn't even try to defend me in my case. Ignored emails, and failed to present that could have easily got the protective order thrown out. Richard advised me not to file my own protective order because it would be looked at as retaliation but guess what less than a year later the same judge that issued a protective order against me stated I should of filed my own at the beginning of the case and she would have granted it because of my exes unhinged behavior throughout the case. She now saw that he was full of crap and a liar. Instead of Richard telling the truth that he has ZERO experience in a protective order case. He ill advised me and made a fool out of the both of us in the court room. I have PTSD for how poorly he preformed. It just bothers me that there are so many money hungry attorneys out there who know they are not good at their job, but insist on taking on challenging cases that they cannot win. Do with this information what you will but you've been warned about this guy

She helped us organize our various information, guided us through parts we were unsure about, and explained our options for each step. We really appreciated her thorough and knowledgeable guidance. It really gave us a lot of peace of mind to have the tools to help make these life events less stressful in the future for our family and friends. She also really cared about what kind of legacy is important to us. Thank you!

Ford + Bergner - Attorney Don D. Ford III

Ford + Bergner

I have worked with several law firms over the years and Don Ford and his team at Ford + Bergner are…read moreethical, caring, and true experts in estate and guardianship litigation. I highly recommend them to anyone who needs the best firm by their side.

I waited to see if Ford+Bergner would respond to a third request for billing information and to…read moredate I have not heard back from them. Here is my story: I talked with Don Ford about doing a prenup prior to my wedding. Don told me it would cost $4,500 to $5,000 depending on how much negotiation would take place between them and my future wife's lawyer. That was the last time I talked with Don. After sending them my financial information all communication was with Luis (I am guessing an intern). The prenup was straight forward. Nothing complicated. I sent Luis a list of my assets and my future wife's assets. The first version of the prenup I got had the name of someone else's estate. I get that, it was probably a copy of a previous prenup that was modified and the name was missed. Luis and I exchanged 3-4 emails with corrections and clarifications over several weeks. Luis apologized at one point saying he had been busy and missed an email. Once the small handful of changes were updated the prenup was sent to my future wife's lawyer. They responded with some wording changes that were accepted by me and incorporated into the prenup. Luis then sent an email out to coordinate a meeting to execute the prenup. When we were about 2 weeks from our wedding so I told Luis we would get the prenup notarized without legal representation. Luis sent me some specific instructions for doing this and we got it done without a problem days before our wedding. After the wedding I got an invoice from Ford+Bergner for $6,700! I immediately emailed Don asking for an explanation since the whole process appeared to me to go smoothly and no back and forth with the other law firm. I asked for a breakdown of the $6,700 fee. A week goes by with no reply. I sent a second note and got an email from Don after another week goes by. He says it is very hard for them to predict how much time it is going to take but he reduced the fee to $5,750. The following day I get a new invoice for $5,750 and interestingly listed as a "Flat Fee". No breakdown of the new invoice. I paid the fee and once again asked for a breakdown of the bill. It was not a Flat Fee when I originally spoke with Don. The executive assistant responded and said she would forward my request to the accounting department. It has been a week since that request and I have not heard anything more. It appears my experience echoes what others are saying. If you are considering Ford+Bergner, decided if you want to deal with their billing practices. Update: Almost 2 weeks and the accounting department has not responded. This is disappointing but fits with what others have said about this outfit.
