Great family restaurant in the market serving burgers fries and diner style food. Down in the market it can be a tab expensive at some of the mid priced dining options. Here at the King Eddy its super reasonable. The burgers and fries were super tasty on my visit. We were able to sit on the terrace (patio) on a nice warm evening. Service was friendly quick and an enjoyable visit. The restaurant management are very active on social media (Instagram) and appreciate your food pics. Cheap eats, great burgers and friendly service and a solid beer menu. How can you seriously go wrong? read more

For 24 hour diner, this place hits it out of the park. Breakfast is hearty and quality is very good. Home fried were very good with cooked onions. Yum! Been to many US diners and this one is high on list. A couple dishes I wish they had from South, like country fried steak, biscuits and sausage gravy, and corned beef hash Burgers-my double patty cheeseburger was excellent. I had been looking forward to trying the food at the King Eddy because of decent Yelp reviews but somehow my family and I walked away with having a less than stellar experience. Having driven several hours from the GTA, we were looking forward to indulging in good comfort food. I ordered their chicken and waffles (based on good reviews) but found their waffles were just meh and their chicken, although generous in portions, was dry and salty. My dad and husband ordered the Kung Pao chicken salad and Kung Pao chicken wings respectively. I had a feeling right when they ordered it that it was likely not the best choice to order Asian food at a non-Asian restaurant but hoped to be proved wrong. Both of them found the chicken was again excessively seasoned with pepper which made it challenging for them to finish their food. My mom, who ordered a fish sandwich, was the only one who didn't have complaints about her meal. However despite repeated requests for help with establishing wifi connection, she gave up asking. Byward market has an expansive selection of restaurants to choose from. Unfortunately based on our experience, we will not be returning to this one. 2.9 stars. read more

I've had a chance to come by twice now. Once for dinner and once for breakfast. Dinner - Burger with fries. The burger was solid, came with slabs of cheese and some lettuce and tomatoes. You can get bacon and other condiments for extra. You don't even have to ask if I got the bacon. The buns remind me of the generic grocery store buns with sesame seed but they're better...maybe just fresher. Would order again! Breakfast - Came by for the King Eddy Brunch with eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, home fries and toast. The breakfast was solid and I couldn't finish it. Coffee is from Bridgehead (I think) but the bacon and sausage were cooked well. Skip that dog food from Zak's and come by the King Eddy Oh yeah the decor is pretty cool - it's much more clean and my friend mentioned it's like Supply and Demand inside. There are lots of other specials like corn dogs and fried chicken. I'll have to check it out sometime in the near future. There is also a solid selection of local beers. So we were a group of 5 at The King Eddy recently. It was Friday night/Saturday morning (we arrived before midnight, but left after midnight). The place wasn't that busy. We got the U-shaped booth at the front of the restaurant, which was cool. Everyone ordered some "greasy food" except for me, I had a salad and was made fun of for doing such, but I feel that I got the last laugh because my salad was delicious and my meal was actually healthy, haha. I was leery of ordering a salad at a place that looks like it specializes in burgers, fries, hotdogs and that type of food, but decided to take the chance. I was so pleasantly surprised that it was awesome because at most places like this the salads are usually terrible (i.e. mostly iceberg lettuce with some token other veggies thrown in). So I had the Whole Earth Salad ($8.99). It had mixed baby greens (no iceberg lettuce, yay!), chickpeas, cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, shredded carrots, shredded beets, dried cranberries, pistachio nuts, and feta cheese. The dressing was a lime-cilantro vinaigrette. I asked for the dressing on the side, and I'm glad that I did because it was really oily and I ended up eating the salad pretty much without dressing, but even without dressing the salad was so delicious, in fact I felt it didn't need any dressing. The textures were awesome - the crunchiness of the raw cauliflower, the chewiness of the dried cranberries, the juiciness of the cherry tomatoes, they all blended together so well. The contrasting tastes also blended together well - the nippy feta cheese, the sweetness of the beets, it was so good! The salad I had at The King Eddy rivals any salad that I've had at those hippie granola vegetarian places that I love so much. Yes, you heard right, this salad was just as good as (if not better than) the salads I've had at Simply Raw Express, Pure Kitchen, etc. I was shocked, but pleasantly so. My husband had the "Northern Fried Chicken with Waffles" ($13.99). They were real waffles, not Eggo waffles, and were fluffy and good. The fried chicken was peppery and delicious. It was more Popeye's than KFCs in style. This dish also came with hand cut fries with the skins on which were great and a coleslaw which I didn't try. My husband was impressed with his meal and said he would definitely come back. Our other friends had burgers and poutine. Their food looked good and they seemed to enjoy their meals. Our server was really friendly and nice and checked up on us appropriately. He brought us lots of water (they put bottles on your table for you to serve yourself) and he was all around great. The decor is kind of old school diner meets hipster chic. I liked it. This place is open 24 hours from Thursday - Sunday!! Other nights they close at 1am. Interesting twist and flavours. We ordered chicken wings in kung pao flvaour but surprisingly had a lot of herby/rosemary flavours. Another appetizer was their fried cauliflower- this was literally an entire cauliflower cut into 3 huge chunks and fried. It may be quite cliché to just give a 5-star and a four-and-a-half star may just seem a more discerned opinion. The King Eddy tho really didn't disappoint and the lineup out the door on a Saturday early afternoon already gave a positive initial impression. Since I was by myself, I bypassed the crowd and sat down at the relatively free bar area. I came here for chicken and waffles on a recommendation so it didn't take long for my order to go in. I chose a ginger beer on the side and the very personable gentleman behind the bar quickly filled the request. It took a little longer than expected for the food to come but that's probably due to the more than expected quantity of chicken (3 pieces - thigh, drumstick and chest), waffles, copious amount of fries, coleslaw, and a saucer of gravy, all of which are guaranteed to take half a decade off your lifespan. The chicken was very well made with a crispy and thin skin layer yet the meat is juicy and well flavored. King Eddy also didn't skimp on the fries either, which were consistent, very crispy, and not bland. My only note was that the waffles were a bit moist when I got to it, but maybe because I spent the first five minutes being camera happy. In all, great food, classy atmosphere, welcoming and generous staff, and an excuse to work out in the afternoon. Definitely recommend. read more

The server did take a bit to come write down our order, however, as mentioned above the place was full. We ordered a maple milk shake, which with all honest left much to be desired. Not because it was bad, it tasted great but it tasted more like a vanilla shake with a hint of maple. I WANT MORE MAPLE! Lol We ordered the King Eddy Breakfast ($7.99) - all day I had mine with the morning glory patty, basically it's a sausage patty made in house but sadly I didn't like their seasoning. WAYYYYYY too much rosemary. I personally don't like rosemary. If you do maybe you would like it. The potatoes were a bit bland. The eggs were cooked well and the toasted well .... toasted well! Bleh, I am not impressed this place and I don't understand why people like this place. I found it pretty lackluster in terms food and service. The patio is pleasant enough and the fact that they are open all hours helps a lot. But service was eh, we were often left to our own devices and it took a long time to get their attention for us in all cases; which isn't necessarily ideal when you have an active toddler in tow. Food was ok, maybe we just ordered the wrong thing, but I though the food as ok, but not outstanding. So yeah, ok but not what I would call amazing. Nice diner across the street from Byward market. I visited on a Saturday evening around 6 and was able to get patio seating which was very nice. They serve burgers, fried chicken and breakfast fare. I had the deep fried pickles and fried chicken. Both were very good. Service was friendly and efficient. Parking can be a problem here as it's downtown Ottawa but there were a few public lots around. Nice place to go on a summer evening if you want to dine out on the patio. read more

A friend recommended we go to King Eddy for breakfast, so off we went on a sunny Saturday. We arrived around 12, the place was busy but there were available tables so we were seated and provided with water right away. My biggest complain was the noise level. The music was so loud that we had to talk loudly to hear each other, that combined with the other customers talking loudly over each other made for an unpleasant ambiance. The coffee was bad. But the King Eddy Breakfast was great! I asked for my home fries to be turned into poutine with hollandaise instead of gravy and I was very satisfied. The eggs and bacon were cooked perfectly. I was happy with my breakfast in general, but the overall ambiance of the pub wasn't pleasant. The service was fast and the waitress was nice. That being said, I probably wouldn't come back because I know there are other breakfast places that are just as decent without the loud ambiance. read more

Came here on Saturday evening for dinner while in town. The diner was not overly busy but had a few other groups in the house. Space was big, service was friendly, and menu had lots of options. We were super hungry and had a hard time deciding but we settled on poutine with burger, king Eddy Burger, loaded fries with tomato, green onion, chili, and sour cream, and corn dog. Everything was pretty tasty but especially the poutine and corn dog which I would come back for. Loaded fries were a bit dry and wasn't a fave. Loved this place! My husband and I drove from Toronto and decided to eat in a restaurant instead of ordering room service. It was almost midnight and this place was close to our hotel so we gave it a try. The chairs were up and we thought they were already closed but as soon as we walk trough the door there was a person ready to take our orders. We got the King Eddy Breakfast and The Cure Burger. Everything was just wonderful! The burger was juicy and full of flavours. The home fries were perfectly cooked and the chili is definitely one of the best I've ever had. Staff is super friendly, the place is very clean and the prices are unbelievably cheap considering the quality of the food and the service. I have been wanting to try this place since it first opened and I finally got to. My friend and I went early on Sunday before another event. Although I seriously debated getting the chicken and waffles I had to go for a burger. I ordered the King Eddy burger with my favourite toppings and fries on the side and a mimosa to drink. The mimosa was delicious! I definitely recommend giving it a try. The burger is a two patty burger that definitely tastes homemade and is super juicy and tasty! The fries were crispy and tasty they just needed a little more seasoning for my liking. The staff are very friendly and attentive. I am sitting here drooling over the memory of the burger. The place has a fantastic atmosphere with a great diner feel and a chef who is singing along to the great tunes on the radio. There was a lot of takeout going out the door so the place seems pretty popular and I can see why. After our event we went back for milkshakes because I was dying to try one but was too full right after dinner so immediately the staff was like did you forget something and we said nope just here to try the milkshakes so I asked him his recommendation and based on that went with the cookies and cream (I say based on that but cookies and cream is one of my favourite flavors so I was probably going with that either way). My friend got the chocolate and we both agreed the milkshakes were delicious. I am intrigued to try their spiked milkshakes which I will have to go back for. I know we weren't the only ones bothered by this, we could hear two other tables discussing this as well. I know you have to server us food and drinks, but we didn't like being approached from behind with the server leaning in close over us. In Ottawa for the weekend with the beau & our lodgings weren't yet ready so we walked around Byward Market for a bit. The hunger pangs took hold when we happened upon this establishment. We noticed it because EVERYONE was there: seated both inside and outside (even on this moderately chilly day). There was a bit of a wait on the inside (as told to me by the slightly harried waitress) but many seats outside where we hesitated to sit due to the weather. We soon left and wandered next door to the Red Lion which was pretty empty (for a reason!!). Upon entry we were greeted by a sullen(ish) waitress and a musty smell. So, we got out of there fast! And back to King Eddy we went, which by this time was even fuller on the patio than before and still at capacity on the inside. Nonetheless, we were seated outside fairly quickly by an easy going gentleman whose name escapes me. And in spite of what happened after, we were served by a delightful waitress named Miriam who handled all the issues and challenges of a packed restaurant & delayed orders with top notch customer service and an unwavering smile. Miriam appeared almost as soon as we sat. She'd just been assigned outside to help the firsr stressed out waitress. She took our drinks order which arrived promptly although my glass was sticky outside. Our food order was another story: One order (to share) of chicken and waffles...took...FOREVER!(30mins). When it finally arrived, there was a fluffy waffle and extremely flavorful gravy (it was almost like a well seasoned beef soup with regards to taste). But then the chicken! Three generous pieces of perfectly fried and seasoned batter with a such bland chicken underneath. But we were ravenous by this point and ate the chicken drenched in syrup and gravy. Still hungry, we ordered a serving of pancakes. Which alas, never came. Another 30 minutes passed and so, we asked. Where were our pancakes? Miriam rushed to find out having come a few times before to apologize for the delay. Then she returns & reports that there'd be another 20 mins before we'd have them. At this point, we cancelled the order, paid our bill. And just left. Bottom Line: Seated out front with a clear view behind the bar and into the kitchen, we could clearly see that this place CANNOT facilitate itself at maximum capacity. Too many seats. Too many menu offerings. And one tiny kitchen with its staff of three. My advice: Drop a quarter of the seats in warm, peak weather. Trim the menu to a few key winners. Distribute staff better. With the abundance of restaurants to choose from, it's hard to pick a place to eat in the Byward Market. I am happy we went with this decision because King Eddy didn't disappoint our tastebuds! The king eddy omelette and french toast were our choice and the veggie chilli that comes with the omelette had me wanting more. Yummy :P We liked this place so much we ate here twice for breakfast! It's a nice looking spot with a patio and it's reasonable priced unlike some other restaurants nearby. The food took a bit long to come out but that's because we were there during the final Canada 150 celebrations so I don't blame them for that and they did make us aware of that. The omelet was just folded over the meat and peppers, so they all tumbled out when I tried to take each bite. Tasted OK through. They brought a side of chili, which was interesting. Had the eggs Benedict with fried chicken: poorly done--small, barely crispy pieces of chicken with bland gravy. Poached eggs slightly overdone so it was not runny enough. Stopped by last night - the place was empty at 8:30 pm so we were skeptical about eating here in the first place, but we live in the Market and thought we'd try something new. The result was "OK" but I was left feeling that there were better places we could have eaten for $80. First - their Ceasar (drink) is amazing. It says "Bloody Mary Style" below the drink description. I was confused by that as the description clearly stated Clamato. Ah, well, tomato, clamato. Selection of local beers and Bridgehead coffee is a nice touch, and the feel of the restaurant is great (though it felt VERY deserted and empty as the sole customers). The interior design is amazing though, and I think this place has potential to be a happenin' joint. Here's the catch though - aside from the burger (which was amazing), the food was just meh. The calamari (which was super intriguing on the menu) in a Kung Pao sauce tasted overwhelmingly of vinegar. I wouldn't say it was "spicy" but the flavour was so strong we couldn't get through it (and we were hungry, so that is saying something). Also we LOVE spice, so that wasn't the problem. I had the "Whole Earth Salad." It sounded wholesome, and the description was healthy yet enticing, but I should have had the burger. Something about the vibe of the place should have told me that they are not the place for an "off the hook" salad experience. Actually, is a salad ever really "off the hook?" Maybe that's my problem. Anyways, there was way too much dressing on it. Waaay too much. The service was attentive and the wait staff were friendly. Also, I enjoyed the jams. I guess I was just disappointed that I felt we didn't really "get what we paid for" with the quality of the food preparation (barring the burger). I would recommend that the owners try to model it after "Le Bureau de Poste" in Quebec City. They have a unique concept of offering ALL food menu items at $4.95. It gets people in the door in droves, and drinking more too *hint hint* It would really set this place apart from Zaks and everything else in the Market. Cheers! read more

Not sure what was going on today, but we waited over an hour for food and had an inattentive server. If they'd acknowledged the wait it would have been better, but to leave it unsaid didn't help the hungry stomachs at the table. That said, sharing the succulent, yet crispy fried chicken as a side was an excellent idea, as was ordering the BLT&E but on bread instead of the croissant. Their chicken and waffles are great + they're open late = win! I'll elaborate, because I'm really into chicken and waffles. It's not the best chicken and waffles I've ever had. But for all-day chicken and waffles, it's pretty good. The portion sizes are generous - you get three pieces of chicken and a ton of potatoes. The chicken is nicely seasoned, the skin is crisp. The waffle was a little soft and I wasn't a fan of the gravy/sauce (too spiced for my liking) but overall, I was very happy. The decor is fun and the service was friendly. Great mid-priced restaurant in the market. Would recommend! They're open 24h on the weekends, so it's a great place to get some greasy food in your stomach after a night out. And as another reviewer said, this place is super relaxed so if you just want to chill for a while with a drink or some fries or some coffee, you can totally do that. read more

We were in Ottawa one night and wished we picked a different restaurant. We waited 10 minutes for the server to first come over for drinks, then another 45 minutes for our food. We ordered appetizers but they came out at the same time as entrees. It was all waaaay over cooked to the point that the server apologized that the fried pickles were so over cooked there were no pickles left so he had the kitchen make a new one. Visited on a Sunday and the place was fairly full. The food selection is very interesting. I had to try the Loco Moco. Food was good but not spectacular. I was surprised that the coffee was charged by the cup. The server kept offering to top up our cups and when the bill came our coffees cost more than our food. My partner and I were on a double date and decided as a group to go to a Burger joint no ones tried before. I was amazed at the outcome of King Eddy's. I had their OG burger, with the 1/2 salad/fries. Everything was delicious. I loved the product they used for the salads, their fries were actual potatoes they likely crafted themselves, and the burger itself was delicious. We had a really sweet waitress that was also really tentative. The only star I'm knocking is to it's Owner. Get some damn fans for your employees. I don't have a big enough wallet but if I did, I would have been even more generous to all the hardworking chefs/waitresses. They deserve a fan or air ventilation of sorts...So do customers (when the doors are open to the patios-it's very humid). read more

The waitress who greeted us was extremely awkward then we saw her pass our table at least 5 times to serve the couple behind us but we had a different server for some reason who only came by to take our order. I ordered chilli cheese fries and my friend ordered fish and chips. I probably had like 30 fries in there? It was like a SOUP . Which was confusing because my friend had so many fries they were falling all over the place. While we were waiting an eternity for our bill a homeless man came up to us and started saying nonsense. We were so uncomfortable we went inside and asked for the bill and then after 10 mins of waiting inside we finally left. Whenever I am in Ottawa, I always make it a point to drop by this place. It is comfort food at its best. Their burgers are legendary, perfectly grilled, cheesy, classic.
