If you are lucky enough to get their loved one into Cherry dale, consider yourself charmed. I read…read morethe reviews for Cherrydale so I interviewed patients outside in the courtyard. What they told me is "Cherrydale is quirky but your loved one will get better" and this "place is better than a facility in Fairfax because there are single rooms as opposed to being three in a room". Based on this, I wholeheartedly pursued getting my father into Cherrydale. The rooms are nice, like a Marriott Hotel and the fitness and rehab center and rehab staff are excellent. Due to the COVID era, Cherrydale was short staffed so every now and then I asked the nurses for fresh sheets and changed my father's bed or helped him clean-up but my father was improving dramatically every day with the physical fitness. He came in a wheel chair, he left being able to walk without a walker. They have an excellent team so to have the most success 1) track your patient and communicate needs or questions with your social worker assigned to their case, 2) talk to the team that helps with discharge. Do not wait to get instructions for medicine and home care to the day before. With supply shortages, you need to prepare for discharge a week in advance. Ask the nurses to train you on anything --they offer family training but you have to ask in advance and you have to participate. Cherrydale gave my father a second chapter at 82. Three out of four doctors told me to take my father who was bed bound home to die after a serious case of pnuemonia where he became bed ridden. Four months later, my father is able walk almost 10,000 steps a day, entertain friends, and do house projects. Every time I see him, I am shocked at his recovery and I know it would not be possible without the program at Cherrydale. I am overjoyed and grateful. No one should take this place for granted and put your expectations into check. Your patient will get out of it what they put into it. Several patients told me my father would have to be encouraged to do his PT every day so for several weeks, I went to Cherrydale at lunch time to make sure he was getting his PT done. This advice was very smart. He resisted it many times but in the end I know he would not be walking 10k steps a day without this place.

Worst place in the world. The only bright spot is the nice woman I talked to today about billing…read more But the treatment by the "nursing" staff was awful.

The place gets pretty crowded around lunchtime and after work. I preferred the off hours. They recently opened a much needed room across the hall. There is free parking in the back.

Strongly recommend the Arlington (Ballston/Marymount) location for Medstar Health Physical Therapy…read more I had total ankle replacement surgery performed in mid-February, and started my physical therapy sessions about 3 weeks later. My PT sessions alternated between Maggie and Kris twice a week until late May, when my visits tapered off to once a week until completion of my therapy in mid- to late-June. Both Maggie and Kris are consummate professionals, friendly and engaging but also acutely aware of what I could (and couldn't do) at the various stages of my recovery. Without their help, I would not have recovered as quickly - and as strongly - as I did. They were very knowledgeable, while still being careful, about expanding my ankle's range of motion and building its strength, which in turn gave me more confidence in the progress of my recovery. Because of their prudent treatment and careful prodding, I was starting neighborhood walks by late March, resumed bike riding in early May, and started hitting golf balls again in mid-May. By the end of May, I was taking 25 mile bike rides and playing 18 holes of golf - well ahead of my anticipated recovery schedule. I'm very grateful for their treatment and professionalism, as well as for the work of the staff at Medstar PT Arlington. My treatment overlapped with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the protocols at Medstar were very solid. I would highly recommend their services to anyone in need of PT.

This started with a 3 fusion neck spine, Inova Alexandria Hospital then Inova Mount Vernon (IMV)…read morethen Alexandria Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center (ARHC). At IMV I had one-on-one with PT (physical therapy), OT (occupational therapy) and SLP (speech language pathology) therapies, eight days, 21 hours. If I am wrong and the first day did not have any therapies then there were "only" 18 hours. That is real rehabilitation. ARHC is not rehabilitation. There were seven full days, the first was Friday and and absolutely no therapy on that Friday. All ARHC therapies are half hours. l add two more just to help things so there are better; that's 4 hours. To make it "fair" I'll chop off one IMV day to get them equal; that's 15 hours. ARHC is 27% compared for the same numbers of days. Rehabilitation? At ARHC I do not know if there is any SLP at ARHC; I did not get any SLP. The PT and OT staff are pretty good but have an environment not easy. Most have two or some even have more than two patients and few patients are just sitting on a chair. The "gym" is small and and the equipment very few, not good. Two exercise bicycles, a new one where the hand bar and pedals have no connection, strange and never to use again. An older and much better but the LEDs all gone so the therapy used their cell phone and tells a few things while someone else is doing something slow and more time. Most of the time were with 3 pound dumbballs, watched and counted but after twice done almost alone. The balance board was also good with the therapy placed to catch if I stumbled or let me between two rails. I've had bowel problems. That cause was not the ARHC staff. The problem was that after the mess it took more than 10 minutes to not get help with the red button. There were about 30 feet from my door with about four staff were chatting real loud (if not screaming) and I left my door not wearing any pants going to the other end to the desk at the hall end. Someone caught me real fast (not physical) and got back to fix it. That helped clean me up but it took more than a day to get the toilet and floor "reasonably" clean but not really clean. The food was the worst I have ever had. To be honest I am very picky and that does not mean that I what I like is what most people do like. But how could every patient get exactly the same thing that every one gets? How well do almost everyone think cooked food that is barely warm is OK. Some do actually have warm parts, but only in the middle and bottom on the plate, or you learn that you can get your plate heated in the microwave with those who bring and take the food. I like oatmeal cereal, when I cook it as the box says and use some milk and sugar. I tried them several times and spit them out. They were mostly cool not warm, sticky, tasteless, some lumpy, other times ground to nothing. I like scrambled eggs; these were OK and I ate all even if not warm. I ate about 20% of what I was willing the entire time I was there. The last full day I had a dizzy like never before and they put me in a wheelchair. They use a cuff and my heart was about 80/50 or 50/80. They sort of said I needed to eat if I wanted to live. I think that's enough. george.shaffer@comcast.net
