So this place has been on my list of "to try" for months but I could never find anyone that wanted to venture the big bad 6th street to eat at a place listed under Gastropubs. Luckily, I have a foodie BiL that finally came to visit. Service-great Atmosphere-local dive bar look that scares away the tourists. It was surprisingly spacious. There was the main area, a second bar, and then an outdoor area in the back. Beer-I had a root beer but the BiL had a Guinness that he said was poured the way beer should be poured. There was a long list up on the wall of their drafts. Food- okay, the best part! BiL had the grilled catfish poboy. He said it was the best he ever had. It was messy and oh so yummy. I had the the Yucatan burger. OMGosh! After this I firmly believe pulled pork should always be on a burger. It would have been smoked meat overload if it weren't for the perfect balancing act with the pineapple pico. The waffle fries were by far near perfect. They were thick and still crispy. I don't know how they managed to accomplish this seeing how no one else on the planet can. Next on my list: the Double Wide and pretty much every single one of their pies. read more

That giant drink in the pic (see it?) is a Helldorado. It's the corniest name for the lamest $9 drink. I mean, I guess you have to be drunk enough to want to order something larger than your head and share it with friends with these super long straws, but everybody was doing it so my friends and I thought, why the hell not. Well, it didn't even give me a buzz. The atmosphere of this place, compared to other bars on 6th street, is a lot more laid back. It's probably because it's away from all of the foot traffic. Jackalope also plays pretty good music, like local faves and former Dentonite The Riverboat Gamblers. I think this is the only bar I'd go to, that I know about, if I were on 6th street. Food was good when it came out correctly but had to send back what was put in the computer versus what I asked for. Tonight October 30, 2021. I put a food order in for honey jalapeño wings, an order of waffle fries and a dos xx draft. Total came to 22 and was given order number 80 around 8:00 Pm. Order came out as a burger and side of fries which after checking your menu, should've only been 14$ plus what ever the beer was which I'm sure isn't 8$ for a draft beer in a plastic cup. I informed the food runner it should've been wings and he showed me where the food was rung in as a burger instead, no harm no foul a simple misunderstanding or so I thought. The bartender who rang it in informed me I ordered a burger when I "shouted" my order at him and said I like that with fries. By my calculations, if I did intact order the burger with a side of fries it should've been 11.5 for burger plus 2.5 for fries. Not almost 16 I'm assuming plus 6$ for a dosxx. I get it it's Halloween weekend. But if you can't fully hear the order then just make sure with customer before finalizing and putting order in and over charge them if in fact you thought I ordered a burger. But also don't give attitude when customer asks for the wings and believes the wings only come with 8 like you PDF menu states. Not from Austin but will not be back anytime soon. Unfortunately I paid in cash or I would ask for a refund for the difference because I'm entitled to that I believe. I understand customer isn't always right. But food costs can't be that high that you need to argue about the wrong button being pressed on your end. And yes this is the exact same review I sent to the contact us for on the website, I'm sure nothing will change with how orders are put in on busy nights, but just make sure you get your itemized at this establishment so that you know before you walk away from bar. read more

Met expectations but didn't exceed them. A good dive bar with ok service. The place was populated but mostly dead on a Monday around 2pm. The bartender came to get our drink order and told us about the happy hour specials from 2-6:30. Basically two buck wells. Ordered the famed chipotle cheese burger and it was legit. Took about 15 minutes to come out of the kitchen but time seemed not a factor with a cold tail in hand. Juicy, flavorful, and not a thing wrong with exception the bacon was a little tough. Would def recommend. Come and grab a sip and maybe even a bite while enjoying some fifth element movie on the screens. read more

Love this place! Such a funky place. They've got a huge jackalope in the entryway to pose for pictures with! The bartenders are nice, friendly and converse with the patrons! I love that they play weird Japanese horror films on the televisions. The beer list is rather deep, the prices aren't bad for 6th Street! It's a lot larger than it appears from outside, the back patio is my favorite place to hang out in this bar. The bathrooms aren't the cleanest, but in this place it adds to the decor. read more

Come here on Wednesday's because it's buy one burger, get one free - and you can pick whatever burger you want unlike at Hut's where you have to get the same one. We gave The Jackalope a second chance, and I'm glad we did. That ratty bar has been redone, but we sat at a table this time. They've cleaned the place up quite a bit. Yes, most bars are restaurants too, so check them out not only when you're trying to get wasted!! Seeing as how it's on 6th, the place is pretty dark and dirty... When you walk in, there's a large jackalope for you to sit on and take a picture. There's a sign that says you need to have a drink in hand too, but i just hopped on without it. The restaurant is split level, with stairs leading up to an outside patio seating area/bar. We chose to stay downstairs where the ac is. They have a pool table and a couple of arcade game machines to the back of the restaurant. They have happy hour daily from 3?-7, however, we chose to just eat since we were going to drink later on at night. Let's get to the good part, the food review. Jack Basic Burger: i was debating on another burger, but this one had the veggies that I needed while eating a burger. As the name implies, your basic beef burger with tomatoes, onions and lettuce. You don't get to pick how it's cooked, but that's okay. It was good. (4/5) Black and Bleu Burger: my friend ordered this and I didn't try it but he enjoyed it. He did say there was a lot of bleu cheese though. Waffle fries (extra $2): The BEST waffle fries that I have ever had. If you thought chicfila had awesome waffle fries, you need to come here. My friends and I all agreed that it was the best part of the meal. Not too crispy, soggy or salty. Very hardy bite to it. Very large portion. My mouth is salivating just thinking about it. We were drawn into The Jackalope on Sunday morning after looking at their menu and seeing Yelp reviews. When we arrived, we sat in the bar area for a few minutes and didn't have anyone greet us despite the restaurant not being busy. We moved into the dining room area and still received very slow service. Once we had a server, I ordered a bloody mary and it was really great! They use Zing Zang...one of my favorites! I had the Green Eggs and Ham from the brunch menu. It had too many flavors going on to really enjoy. I was not a fan. My friend ordered a pulled pork sandwich and it was great! I saw them browsing their list of movies and it was quite the extensive list. they also play a lot of 80s and 90s heavy metal - not hair bands, but REAL, dark heavy metal. Really good food - I had the jerk chicken sandwich for $7.99. It was plentiful and the chicken was awesome. Be aware that the sandwiches don't include any fries or sides - those are extra. The reason I rated them at 3 stars is that their website proclaims "happy hour" all day on Mondays. I paid $4.00 for a bottle of Bud Light!!! that's just highway robbery. read more

I had the ceaser burger this time and the dressing was top knotch as is their meat! This place doesn't know the meaning of an over done burger thankfully! Also, how can you go wrong with crinkle cut fries???? My boyfriend had the chicken strip basket and he said they were good as well! The decor is interesting and you can always play spot the tourist when you see them getting up on the giant Jackalope to get their picture taking! The slices are a great remedy for late night snacks or medicine for a glucose pickup up after drinking. The crust on the bottom was super soft, the veggie slice was soggy in some areas. Would have loved for the crust on the bottom to be a little harder/crispier. The staff serving the pizza was friendly and offered takeout slice boxes. I love this place! I visit Austin about once or twice a year and every visit has to include a trip down to the Jackalope. This bar is definitely a dive of the best kind. Dark, with a red lit bar, dark stools, and dark/semi-nude genre of art on the walls. The bartenders are tough but super nice and the drinks and the pizza are delicious. For 12 dollars, the Helldorado will quench your thirst and the thirst of everyone else in your group. It is tradition to split one with my friend every time we're here. They are huge! This was my first fantastic dive bar, even complete with an overlarge Jackalope that you could mount and get pictures with. I wasn't even offended by the many topless pics, it all seemed tongue in cheek and not over the top, it fit the setting perfectly. When we first arrived it wasn't quite yet hopping and we found a spot at the bar. By the time we left people were standing and hanging out body to body. There is an outside terrace area, you just have to walk all the way through to the back, and you feel like you are exiting the place and entering another spot. This place would have been five star, except the service was EXTREMELY slow (even for a dive bar). We had ordered two plates of wings with some waffle fries. The first order came out after a bit, but the second one just never quite made it. The bartenders had even changed shifts, and the new bartender went all the way back to the kitchen and brought us the wings himself, freshly steaming hot off the cooker. The waffle fries were AMAZING just by themselves, they had a great seasoning on them. Unlike Franks that need some additional toppings, these were fantastic by themselves. They mastered the perfection of the outside crisp factor with a soft center. Best waffle fries I have had in Austin so far. The wings were also a great greasy treat. Hot and Spicy, loved the buffalo the best. I would stick to the cider and beer, the mixed drinks we had weren't worth the price. read more

I can't believe I forgot to review this place! This is a fun, lively bar right on 6th street that's definitely a must see if you visit Austin. We came here pretty much straight from the airport on a weekday afternoon and had no problem grabbing a few seats at the bar for a much needed beer and meal. I tried the White Rabbit beer, which was super delicious, and nearly dove head first into my Chipotle Bacon Cheeseburger. The portions are massive and it was cooked at a perfect medium--so tasty. The staff was also phenomenal. They were attentive and social without being over bearing, which I think is a perfect balance. I also loved the old school movies they played above the bar and the - ahem - colorful artwork scattered about. And of course, you can't say no to a photo op with the giant Jackalope in the front. Cheap drinks, fast service and tasty wings. I've stopped in to the Jackalope twice, about 3 years apart from one another. Astetically nothing changed, but that is not a bad thing. This place is a super dive in the best ways. I really like the enormous Jackalope sitting at the entrance, which you're allowed to take pics on top of and they don't charge you. Very cool. The are is a big circle, with the bar located in the middle. I really like places like that. The particular night my g/f and I went a DJ was mixing and I really liked that. We walked around the farmers market, walked to the boardwalk on Lady Bird Lake from 2nd street to Montopolis...It was a long morning so we decided to try this place out for lunch. I know they are known for their hamburgers. But trying to watch my carbs I ordered the chicken cesar salad. Delish. and you could tell it wasn't just dressing from a bottle. this was made from someone whipping ingredients together. It came on a tray with homemade croutons. Went ahead and grabbed a drink, and decided to get a burger. Great customer service, great burger, and fun environment. If you're a fan of dive bars, try this one! We were looking for someplace to have lunch on 6th Street and stumbled on this place given very few places were open, even on a Saturday. We ate simply, ordering a Chili Dog, Hot Wings and drinks. My fiancé claimed these were the best wings he had ever had. They were cooked perfectly, tender and meaty. The wings come in 5 degrees of heat. He ordered the 3rd level and felt the burn. Can't imagine what level 5, "Porno Hot", might be like! The Chili Dog was all beef...dog and chili. I ordered the chili on the side mainly because I don't like my bun soggy. The chili was spicy and the dog super flavorful. So good! Finally, the service was exceptional. Very friendly. The place wasn't crowded, so not sure if that changes anything. But based on the number of staff around, I'm guessing it would be consistent. We definitely recommend the Jackalope. read more

My friend and I, while road tripping through the South, randomly stumbled into this place thanks to the air conditioning and great advertising ("Best. Burger. Ever" on the sign out front), and I'm so glad we did. I got the Black and Bleu burger and it was fantastic. Easily one of the best burgers I had on the entire trip. The meat was seasoned really well and packed with a hard-to-describe smoky tenderness. The bleu cheese added a nice textural change, but also complimented the smokiness of the meat superbly. So we came here because it was featured on the Best Thing I Ever Ate. And it lived up to its reputation. We ordered the honey jalapeño bacon cheese veggie burger and bacon and Brie burger. Both of these burgers were huge. So you should come with an appetite. First of all, I think it is genius to put Brie on a burger. This was my first experience with that. So if you like Brie, you will like that burger. The cheese was lovely and gooey. Just as Brie should be. In terms of my burger, I was expecting more heat with a name like jalapeño. Additionally, the pickles gave it a weird flavor. However, overall I liked my burger.
