It is the final resting place well more than 800,000 people most of whom were in mass graves as a result of the Great Famine and a cholera epidemic in the 1840s. The cemetery contains the final resting place of many notable Irish figures including one of the more famous, Michael Collins who was the nationalist leader killed in the Irish Civil War of 1922. Others that I was able to find include.. Brendan Behan (1923-1964), author and activist who was jailed at an early age for participating in a bombing. Éamon de Valera (1882-1975), president of Sinn Fein and later third president of Ireland. Father Francis Browne (1880-1960), Jesuit priest who is known for the pictures he took of the RMS Titanic (it was built in Belfast). Charles Stewart Parnell (1846-1891), Irish nationalist politician There is a large section of military memorials and throughout the cemetery are monuments to those who fought for Irish independence. There is free parking and the cemetery offers guided tours on a regular basis. You can also purchase tickets to climb the large bell tower which apparently has great views of Dublin. There is a small cafe and there is a gift shop. While there is no driving in the cemetery, the lanes throughout are smooth and easily walkable. The collection on the history of the Irish rebellion is just a part of this excellent museum collection. There are coins, military uniforms, more history than you can absorb in a brief visit. Some of the exhibits- Irish Silver, The Way We Wore, Soldiers and Chiefs, the Asgard (a ship used in the struggle against English rule) and Proclaiming a Republic:the 1916 Rising. I could tell the building was old and wanted to know more! When you step foot inside, you learn so much about Irish history. I'm Irish and didn't know some of what was depicted. So I took the long walk next door and had a nosey around this small little gallery, in their was the artist of the work that was on exhibit. She is also the artist of the flyer that drew me in. Holly Pereira is her name and she was so welcoming. It was once the wealthiest Cistercian Abbey in Ireland. Today only two rooms remain - the Chapter House and the Slype. It was founded in 1139, now that is old! It played a large role in the running of the country until until Henry VIII put an end to it in 1539. It also was were "Silken" Thomas Fitzgerald started his unsuccessful rebellion in 1534. It's also mentioned in Ulysses by James Joyce. Inside is a fascinating display which is free to view. You should ring ahead to plan a tour.

Featuring fully furnished rooms to wander around in, a headsman's block, art by his father and his brother William, a visitor can get a feel for both the day to day life of a student and the vision of one of the shining lights of the 1916 rebellion. I particularly liked the various interpretive panels using the memories of people associated with the school, either as visitors, staff, or students. As a long-term visitor to Dublin, I feel surrounded by oblique and overt stories of the various battles, rebellions, executions and betrayals that are representative of Ireland's history. At times, it can be overwhelming and a little puzzling. The Pearse Museum helps to both humanize and explain how that history directly and personally affected the art, language and life of some of the instigators of the 1916 rebellion and, ultimately, of Irish Independance. The museum itself sits in a beautiful park with several larger-than-life sculpture installations, so it's a good place to pack a lunch and spend a few hours inside and outside. As of this writing, the museum features free admission and a visiting exhibition space, currently displaying a static and slightly unsettling exhibit on the history of slavery, past and present. I highly recommend it, especially to American visitors as there are some interesting angles on slavery in America as well as around the world. Bottom Line: Go, learn, enjoy. Think about what it means to be a nationalist.

This museum is dedicated to the memory of Ireland's renowned revolutionary poet, teacher and Gaelgeoir, who lead the 1916 rebellion and was executed for his role in this. The exhibition tells in a very interactive and friendly way, his life, his work, the famous boys school that he established here. It also allows you to see a number of rooms of the old school, which gives you more appreciation for the man, his dreams and works.

They have works of a high quality within a surprisingly moderate price range and they have an informal and friendly approach and encourage visitors to take their time and browse through all on display. I have bought a few pieces from them over the past few years and they have always been helpful and you get email invitations to their exhibitions. Really friendly staff who are knowledgable and willing to go the extra mile to help find what you are looking for.
