I actually enjoy the Star when it arrives which is not dependable. I am supposed to receive it Thursday through Sunday but never get all I pay for. I especially am frustrated to not receive a Sunday paper. The area stores never have a Sunday edition that I have paid for. I either am told it will be delivered later that day (has never happened) or I'm given a credit which means nothing. I should have a $1000 credit by now!! I feel I have no choice but to unsubscribe. Because in the last 4 months my newspaper has either been in the street gutter, a water puddle, in my neighbors box who doesn't get it or I do t get it at all. Their call center is very poor and people try tell you everything is fine. Today they said someone would bring it out. Lol bull crap again I called back in and the call center said it was denied. Avoid giving them your information, credit card number, etc. I subscribed briefly to read a specific article about a former student, but then they wouldn't let me cancel via email and didn't answer the phone. Then a day after they charged me for a full year subscription (about $50 not approved on my end), I called them and someone answered with a thick accent that was difficult to understand. I asked that they cancel the subscription and the charge, and they said they would put in the request but could offer no guarantees because the subscription was already paid for the next year. They said they couldn't transfer me to talk to a manager or supervisor but did not clearly explain why. It is not morally acceptable to charge someone for 365 days worth of news after an alert given on the 1st day after an unapproved charge. After several minutes of arguing, the person said I could expect a refund after 5-10 business days, but 10 business days pass, and I did not get a refund. I called again, went through the entire process a second time, and the subscription was FINALLY canceled, but I still did not get a refund. They are crooks. read more

If you don't subscribe to the Indianapolis Star, you are missing the most well-rounded news in the Indy Metro area. I recently subscribed to the digital Star which is very reasonable and sustainable. I particularly like the digital paper because they update with new stories in real time throughout the day. And I can read anywhere on my phone or tablet. The reporters seem to engage in provocative stories with impact, not the fluff we get from local TV media. During the Covid-19 pandemic, they reported on the issues at nursing homes and became advocates for the residents. They also did a series of stories of the victims of the pandemic which celebrated their lives and brought meaning to the numbers. I have been remarkably moved by these stories. Today, they had a story about a day in the pandemic at Methodist Hospital which was eye opening and well balanced. The photography is outstanding as well and often the digital articles are supplemented with a video story. If you watch a news conference in Indianapolis, the Star reporters are asking the tough questions. On the lighter side, the digital issue connects to the puzzles in USA Today. I find the puzzles fun and good for my mental health. There are a broad assortment of word, number and game puzzles to choose from. I spend way too much time doing the puzzles! Of course there is a section devoted to sports which I check periodically. There are some interesting people stories from time to time. The paper was running a three month special for $1/month to get new paper or digital subscribers. Then digital goes up to about $10 per month and paper goes up higher. This is a great deal to read first hand local stories. Indianapolis is fortunate to still have a paper. I will continue to support. You should too. read more

This is becoming ridiculus... My Aunt likes to read her comics in the morning while she has her coffee... Well for the last year we have had to deal with IndyStar delivery employees not doing their jobs right... Several times I have had to go out in the middle of my street to retrieve the news paper like i had to deal with today. Seriously! when we have asked the company multiple times to have the deliverer put the new paper in the news paper slot under the mailbox as my aunt is disabled. One of the papers has been run over by a vehicle and it is flatter than one sheet of printing paper. Now they managed to put the other closer to the drive way but still out on the road. Why was this not uncovered sooner? They have our address, but I guess any excuse will do. But I do hope others who are having issues getting their money back follow suit. I still remember with great affection my teenaged years when I served as a newspaper carrier for what was then The Indianapolis News, an evening edition and sister to the more traditional morning paper, The Indianapolis Star. I'm probably over-sentimental, but I've even still got the news clipping from when I was named "Carrier of the Week" and I still remember a particular trip I won to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In other words, like many folks I've always had a tremendous affection for my hometown newspaper and even during many of my financially lean years I've been a regular reader and/or subscriber. I recently ended my subscription to The Indianapolis Star, the end of a years long relationship that had become strained over the years due to a decline in the quality of writing, a decreased devotion to truly covering Indianapolis as a community, and customer service that only reinforces that The Indianapolis Star has come to too closely resemble a corporate rag. As a film writer myself, I can easily admit that the decline for me started when The Indianapolis Star started syndicating out its arts coverage and its local coverage became sketchy at best. While I'd be hard-pressed to say that The Star's arts coverage was ever consistently brilliant, it was local and I really appreciated it. As one of the largest cities in the nation, it's unfathomable to me that The Indianapolis Star has almost non-existent local arts coverage. While the Sports coverage locally is better, even in that area The Star's most notable sports journalist is a transplant who has simply worked out well and truly integrated himself into the community. The Indianapolis Star is no longer the kind of newspaper that makes you feel like it's part of the community, no matter how much they contribute through "Season of Sharing" and no matter that they've chosen to relocate into the downtown mall. The newspaper recently "expanded," an expansion that really was just an excuse to incorporate more corporate drivel from USA Today into their local coverage and to make the newspaper look even more like the Gannett flagship paper. It's nearly impossible to read The Indianapolis Star without finding grammatical errors, misspellings, typos, and other mistakes that were almost non-existent in the days when actual human beings put the newspaper together rather than allowing automation to take over and save a few bucks. While I'd tried to hang on, mostly out of a sense of loyalty, this past Winter season affirmed my decision to stop my subscription for three very clear reasons - 1) A price increase that was justified by Gannett due to the "expansion" and the increased "online content" yet offered no local expansion and online content that is far from user friendly, 2) Absolutely horrid delivery during what was admittedly a rougher than usual Winter in Indianapolis yet delivery that resulted in no newspaper days at a time, and 3) Disappointing customer service that made no effort to retain me when I called to express my dismay with a fairly substantial price increase. Within a month of my dropping my subscription, I was getting offers to start it up again at a rate even lower than what I'd requested. I'm guessing the word "retention" is not in Gannett's vocabulary. This is not to say that The Indianapolis Star is devoid of quality writers. Indeed, The Indianapolis Star does have some quality writers yet I can't help but feel it's hindered by being part of a larger corporation that hasn't figured out how to balance being a true community newspaper while also being a fiscally responsible corporate entity. I wish Yelp would provide Stars on the negative side of the scale. If I could give minuses I would. Let me preface this by saying I'm a Thursday and Sunday subscriber of the Indy Star and have been for years up until I cancelled earlier this year due to delivery issues. I don't know if what the deal was but my carrier started throwing my paper into the wet grass, almost in the ornamental grasses by the utility box on the property line and I called and complained and was told the carrier would be notified but it just got worse. I called in again and asked of the paper could just be placed at my driveway since I come and go that way and he's already delivering to other homes in that manner. I called in about this continuing problem and was told it would be corrected and it wasn't so I cancelled my subscription to the paper all together. Having been a subscriber since 2003, at two different residences up to this point, I don't get what the difficulty is in placing a paper where you have the address and have it clearly identified with the reflective dots they place at the location where the paper is to be dropped. So several weeks after cancelling the paper I was called and asked to come back but I told them why I left in the first place. Each and every Customer Service Representative has said they see all the notes associated with my account and in the prescribed manner of customer service, they're all apologetic about the issues I have had and this never should have happened. As I told the lady on today, Sunday 2/4/2018 (Super Bowl Sunday) when I was growing up in my parents home, when a paper missed the person came to your door and rang the bell and handed you the paper and so you knew you had it. This doesn't happen today and if it does, how the hell would I know because when I call to say I didn't get my paper, I still don't get a paper. So after speaking to the Rep who asked me to come back to the Star with a renewed subscription, I was told it would be done as I asked and it was for about 3wks. Now as of last Sunday I have issues with my Sunday delivery. I have a RED reflective dot that the carrier placed on my fire hydrant to mark my delivery location and that I'm a Thursday and Sunday subscriber. I get my Thursday paper without issue, I even got my paper when it was super sub-zero weather and when we had snow that caused delays in everything. It was late but I got it and I can work with that when weather is an issue. So why is that when I don't get my Sunday paper, and call in about it, told I'll have my paper dispatched out between 11-11:30a and it doesn't show up by 2pm? Why when I call in about this issue on Monday because on Sunday they close their office and you no longer can speak to a live person about the issue. Well the issue is still not resolved because I missed my paper yet again on Sunday which now makes two Sundays in a row. My neighbor across the street who I don't know to get a paper has one in his driveway but it's not my place or position to take it, it's not the right thing to do. So why can't Indy Star get it right? Guess it's time to call the Star on Monday morning and cancel my subscription, tell them to loose my number and don't ever call me again. The Indy Star content has slimmed down over the years, but the same could be said of any publication - most are now turning to all digital content. Eh, I don't think the Indy Star is all that bad. I subscribe to the Thursday and Sunday editions, but that's mostly for the ads, coupons and crosswords. I also enjoy reading Dana Hunsinger's workplace columns. The customer service is decent - nothing striking but nothing terrible either. Although if you receive an email to them, and respond with a request, they will not fulfill your request and instead tell you to go fill out a form on their website -- that's a little ridiculous if you ask me. Other than that, I'm pretty satisfied with my subscription. It is pretty odd that they do a Sunday Star Early Edition rather than just calling it the Saturday paper. My rating is for delivery and customer service. I have worked part-time in an assisted living community for over 3 years as a concierge. The community itself subscribes for 2 papers daily, and close to 20 of the residents personally subscribe for either daily or 2x weekly. We can usually count on getting at least "1" paper instead of 18-20, which is what we need for those who subscribe. Many times the staff will call The Star/News to report that we did not get the correct number of papers needed, and are usually told that "maybe" they will send more. In the meantime, the residents who do not get their copy begin approaching the desk (or calling IF they have their own phone) between 8:30-10:00). I will remind you these are paid subscriptions. Newspaper "robbers" also steal from their neighbors who are lucky enough to get one when they didn't, but we won't get into that right now. Yesterday (a Monday morning), I called Star/News at 8:15 a.m. to report no papers were delivered, and the wrong amount was delivered the previous day (Sunday, and you know how important a Sunday paper is). I was told we needed to call before 8:00 a.m. to report this delivery problem, and we would not be getting any delivered that day since the call was not placed before 8:00 a.m. Well, when your workday begins at 8:00, and the paper may or may not arrive by 8:00, tell me how you would know if it's coming or not? So basically, if I don't get to work plenty early and wait to see if the paper gets delivered at all, I can't report it? I was then told by the Star/News rep. to have our elderly resident readers go to a computer and read it on-line. I reiterated to him that this is an Assisted Living Community and many do not use computers. By the way, we have ONE computer available for their use. I can just picture them lined up in their wheelchairs, walkers...waiting to read the paper on-line. This Star/News rep. disrespectfully said "I know a lot of 80-90 year olds who know how to use a computer." (I'm thinking, "really....a lot? Please refer them to live here.") Many of our residents do not own computers, and even if they did, they want to "hold" a paper. I asked this Star/News representative if he would like to come work here for a week, and he could get a better idea of what our population of 80-90 year olds are like. I am certainly not lumping all 80-90 year olds together as being all alike. There are some elderly who are very amazing with a computer or cell phone, but that is not the norm. And even so, those people may still enjoy "holding" an actual newspaper. Let me add, my reporting this was only valid for the our community paper. According to the Star/News representative, residents would EACH be required to place an individual phone call for their personal subscriptions. Do you know how difficult this can be for one living in assisted living? Many do not have their own phones. If they do, many would be confused with the automated call system that you encounter in calling The Star/News. Add to that the hearing difficulties and confusion that many encounter in a process like this: "if you are calling to start a subscription, press 1; if you are calling for a billing issue, press 2...your estimated waiting time is". You get the picture. In the meantime, the concierge desk gets bombarded with the big question: "Where is the paper? Did the paper come today? I did not get my paper." We were also told that residents would get a refund ONLY if they individually called to inform "how many days" they did not receive the paper. (Do you think they would remember how many/what days?) So basically, the lack of delivery service enables the Star/News to make money on people without delivering the paper. It becomes too much trouble for the elderly to call and wait, they will just count it a loss. This is such terrible service. And no competitor in which to turn. read more

First, I can't click on on article without at least 2-3 annoying popup ads getting in the way. I use the word annoying to describe the tactics of the ads, not necessarily the content. They are the type that are hard to remove with no obvious area on screen to eliminate. And, the content of material is lame. Huge focus on sports and sensational news. No different from the shallow offerings of USA Today. Minimal content of interest or depth but lots of celebrity, high-drama, and predictable sports "news." It basically sucks. read more

They just raised the single copy price of the daily edition to $1.00. Geez, talk about putting a nail in your own coffin. They reduced the size, then they increased the price. It wasn't that long ago that it was only $.50 for a single copy. I stopped subscribing via home-delivery years ago when home delivery got too unreliable. And when it was delivered, the paper was placed too far from my door, making me get dressed to go get it. Their local reporting isn't all that good to begin with. Many times, I've read articles by their local reporters, and it always seems like they leave out some pertinent facts, or leave obvious questions unanswered. The Star slapped a $5 charge on my August statement for receiving a paper bill. I called and found out they don't provide e-bills and you can't pay your bill on-line. The chat rep disconnected the chat when I questioned why. The only way avoid the $5 paper bill charge is to allow them to take money from your account each month (EZ Pay = ACH). I don't trust the Star to allow that, so it left me no option but to cancel my subscription after 14+ years. I only get the Sunday, but it was hardly worth it when articles were days old. read more

ABSOLUTELY THE WORST CUSTOMER AND DELIVERY SERVICE. I will be sharing with everyone the ridiculous service. You took my money for the service then failed to deliver. When I complained, the computer told me i could get credit or delivery the next day. I finally got someone on the phone and was told it would be at my home by noon. At 6 pm it still was not delivered. I called again and FINALLY got a person on the phone and informed her I wanted a refund; she wanted to negotiate and asked for a second chance when i repeatedly said I want a refund. Two chances were given for delivery and IndyStar couldn't get it done. I was advised they were waiting to hear from the carrier. I was finally told I would get my refund in 7 to 10 days but it was taken out of my account immediately when I ordered. I asked to speak to a supervisor and almost 20 minutes later am alleged supervisor got on the phone. We discussed the issues and suddenly this person is telling me I was not charged so a refund is not entitled. I have the email from IndyStar and an email from my financial institution for the charge. I was also informed the delay in my delivery suddenly is because of Covid-19, talk about pulling an excuse out of an unmentionable orifice. I then request to have thos call escalated and was informed she was the supervisor and there was no one to escalate the call. I asked if she was the CEO, she stated no and advised there was someone to escalate the call to then. I was then advised to would take up to 72 hours for a call. What a load of bull. I also have the digital version on my subscription, it is a joke. I am not paying for a digital copy to read advertising all over every article. Unfortunately, I have to give at least one star. Let me be firm on informing you that if there was an option, I would give it zero stars. Unlike most of the reviewers on here, I would love to comment on the awful content of the subscription. To my dismay, I had never received such subscription that the Indy Star was insisting that I should pay. Hearing that others had failed to receive their own subscriptions, I shrugged it off. These kind of things happen, no big deal. I called up their offices, told them the situation, didn't get my money refunded, but I didn't have to pay for the upcoming subscription. I assumed that would be the end of it, as I didn't expect to be harassed for months on end. It started with the occasional email, "Here's a Deal Just for You!" nonsense. No fuss here, delete it and move on. Said 'occasional' email turned into multiple a day. I struggled to take myself off the email list through the website, but succeeded eventually. For the better part of the month, everything was swell. That is when everything spiraled out of control. I received a phone call at least once a week, if I bothered to answer a number I didn't know, but they never leave messages so I would typically get a call everyday from the initial call until I finally answered, breathless and irritated to hear, "Hello Megan, I wanted to inform you of a great deal on a subscription." Now, I opted to be polite, "I'm not interested, thank you." They weren't satisfied, "Oh can you tell us why, for survey purposes?" I must have explained the issue a dozen or more times, all each as polite as the one before. They never stopped calling. In the midst of the telephone debacle, I received a letter in my mailbox at 3 times a week begging for my little money, my limited time, and my declining energy. I tore them up and threw them in the trash. They can send me letters begging me to take them back but they can't bother mailing me my subscription in the first place? Sounds like an awful ex-boyfriend. Earlier today I received a call, awakening me from an already irritating sleeping pattern. I will be blunt, I may not be the most polite person after being awoken for such annoying nonsense. They had called the day before and left no message, and as I had forgotten the number, I assumed that it was a potential job offer. Imagine my disappointment when I realize it is the same people who I want ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with. The call went the same, "Hello Megan, I have a new deal on a subscription that you should take advantage of." "No thank you, I'm not interested." I grumble, less than the cheery polite tone I had used on previous calls. "Might I ask why you are not interested? For survey purposes?" She really hit the right nerve. "Ma'am, I've answered that question a million bloody times. Stop calling me, take me off your list, whatever it is you have to do to leave me alone. Goodbye." Let me note that this was a stern, 'I never want to speak to you again Goodbye'. Of course, she was offended, but not as offended as I was to have to deal with this constantly for the better part of five months. We'll see if that fixes anything. read more

Just a recommendation, if anyone comes to your door to sell you an Indy Star subscription, DON'T DO IT! We did about 7 months ago, and 4 months ago stopped receiving the paper, but the money kept coming out. After two phone calls to Indy Star to get our $82 back, they told us "there would be no additional refund." Not only did they take our money, they didn't even provide the service. We were told that our account was set up as an ongoing subscription (which is what we were not told) and that it was up to us to contact them if we didn't get the paper. read more
