I was very interested to stop in since the former Hogan's Hideaway was a common stop for me. I really liked their crab cake sandwich and was sad when this place didn't bring that back. The food they have available has an emphasis on "farm to table" which is awesome - I just wish it didn't always come with an increased price. If your were use to Hogan's you would remember the bar being upstairs and dining in the lower street level. We hired The Hideaway to cater our wedding on August 10, 2019. We worked with Max Gordon, the owner. He and The Hideaway are new to the catering business and there were no official reviews on them as caterers available for us to read beforehand. However, Max was very professional, personable, responsive, and energetic when meeting with him and corresponding via email and the food was very good at the tasting in the restaurant which is why we took a chance on them for our wedding. Additionally, The Hideaway has been a Rochester staple for years and we wished to make our wedding as Rochester and close to home as possible. Unfortunately, our expectations were not met and we were left feeling embarrassed on our wedding day while eating food that we would not have enjoyed at any restaurant let alone our own wedding. Cocktail Hour: The charcuterie board was decent but nothing exceptional or extravagant. The passed appetizers (pigs in a blanket, arancini, and bacon wrapped scallops) were fair. They were all slightly to moderately overcooked and lacked flavor. The arancini especially was bland and was not passed with dipping sauce, which was different than what we had at the tasting. Dinner: First, the plated salads were simple iceberg lettuce with bland oil dressing that ended up being soggy. For main courses we had sirloin steak with fingerling pototoes and roasted vegetables, salmon with rice and roasted vegetables, chicken French, and braised cauliflower. The braised cauliflower was soggy and more overcooked with less seasoning than we had at the tasting. The salmon, which we did not get to taste at the tasting, was overcooked and bland. The "sirloin steak" was essentially a roast beef stranded with more fat than there was meat and without any seasoning (We were not provided this to try at the tasting so this was the most shockingly embarrassing to see and have our guests eat). The roasted vegetables (zucchini and squash) were overcooked and soggy, very unlike the tasting where they were sliced thin and cooked perfectly. The rice was overcooked and some bits were hard. The fingerling roasted potatoes at the tasting were roasted with olive oil, salt, and I believe rosemary - regardless the potatoes are part of what sold us on the food as we have been to many weddings where the potatoes were bland without butter or salt available so we did not want that for our wedding. However, that is exactly what we got - dry potatoes without any flavoring whatsoever. Late Night: We had pretzels and mini passed garbage plates. The pretzels were very good and received many compliments. They were all gone so were a great hit. Unfortunately, we were so busy that we did not get to eat the garbage plates ourselves but we did receive good reviews from guests who indulged. Max was present during our reception, which was a plus to see that he is invested in his business and his clients. When I spoke to him in the moment about being disappointed in our main courses, he assisted with finding salt and pepper to pass around to all of our guests and he also brought complimentary chocolate fondue as an apology. Overall, the food for cocktail hour and late night along with Max's presence and personality are what are keeping this from being a 1 star review. We wish him the best in this new endeavor and see the potential that he and The Hideaway have. Unfortunately, we cannot positively recommend them for wedding catering at this time due to our experience. read more

We ate at the old version of Hogan's a few times a year, and really enjoyed it. The new version underwhelmed us. The acoustics are really bad, couldn't carry on a conversation at our table, too loud, the background din was unbearable. The service was poor, even though they weren't very busy. We apparently kept turning invisible, until it was time for the check that is. The menu is really brief, and doesn't have much range. There are plenty of good restaurants in Rochester, the new Hogan's won't be making the list. read more

I wanted to try here since I moved to Rochester. But they were closed for a while so when I got a chance I jumped on it. First of all they have a patio and are pet friendly. So it's plus for us. Food was delicious. Their take on minestrone is delicious. Other than a little more salt, the soup was mild tasty and perfect cold weather treat. Stay away from hide away. The atmosphere is pleasant and the service friendly and prompt when not busy. But buyer beware... Something is seriously wrong when you get served a flat beer and a turkey avocado BLT on toasted white bread without any avocado. This a simple dish, but one of the most delicious crunchy mouth feel experiences if it's done right. However, I think the chef lacks the experience to pull this off. Then to top it off when asked to provide the avocado on the side a brown mushy plate was produced. So bad..... put me off the entire mediocre meal and down graded it to just pure horrible. The fact that the server could bring it out and place it in front of me left me speechless. Flat beer dry tasteless rotten sandwich unkempt hung over atmosphere. Boy oh boy and they want money. It made being away from our family during the covid quarantine a little more bearable... big portions of home cooked goodness. They even threw in some cherries for us for free since wegmans was out! (V necessary for our Easter cocktails). The fact that they gave free meals away to the frontline workers made my heart happy- will stop in for dinner once normalcy resumes! read more

I was so excited to come into this cute restaurant right near park. My mom said it used to be SO good. We went there on a Wednesday night there was not many people there which was great. Our waitress asked what we wanted to drink we got a glass of wine and water. When we received the water it had black particles at the bottom so we asked the waitress if we could have another clean glass. She then poured it out then filled the same glass up with ice and gave it back to us. Okay whatever at least the particles are gone but still kinda gross. After drinking one glass of wine we wanted more and our waitress ignored us until we had to go find her. The chefs aren't trained whatsoever which is not fair to them! This place has potential. The owner also did not seem to care at all that our experience was not a good one. He just said you don't need to pay for it then we left. read more

Hogan's Hideaway is back! With new owners and a renovated space, this bar and restaurant is a Rochester classic. The bar menu focuses on craft cocktails, and I thoroughly enjoyed their Kyushiki drink with Japanese whiskey. I look forward to stopping in again for anther drink. Not a good experience at 5:00 on New Year's Eve and an empty dining room. Our server was excellent so no complaints with her. Cosmos were served in a small champagne glass and the cost was $10 for a very fruity beverage. Not a good star Dinner was a disappointment. Two members had the shrimp and scallops that were good but the risotto was undercooked and crunchy. Crunchy risotto ? My entree was indistinguishable as a vegetable Wellington- so over cooked I could not cut it with a knife. I thought it might have been while wheat flour until I realized it was just burned. It was too late to replace it so grabbed a quick appetizer. Will not return. Update 01/02/2020 Thank you for responding, Max. Our server was aware of the issues with our food as we voiced our concerns and I replaced my Wellington with an appetizer. My husband and I stopped into what use to be "Hogan's Hideway". We haven't been here in years and now under new management. Our food was absolutely delicious! I had the farmer's garden salad with grilled chicken and I can say it was the best salad I have ever had! The veggies were so fresh, like they went outback and picked them. The chicken was juicy and tasty. The homemade dressing was alive with herbs and spices. My husband had the chicken salad on a pesto wrap and French onion soup, both were delicious. TERRIBLE!!!!!! My partner and I ate there and will never go back. I ordered the fried chicken and they ordered the tuna wrap. The chicken was sad! I asked if I could get one piece of white meat and not one person could tell me if that was possible. I ended up with 2 drumsticks and a thigh, all of which were dried out, small and tasted terrible. There is no way they could have cooked them fresh, in-house. It had to have been frozen and pre-packaged. Their mash potato that came on the side was completely raw and their coleslaw and cornbread was pre-packaged and I had to rip open the package! No taste!!! I have been there twice and the staff and owner are so wonderful. You often don't get a personal touch in restaurants anymore but you definitely do at the Hideaway. I ended up having a coughing fit due to a cold and had to walk away from my table. The waiter, who first went out of his way to check on me then unprompted brought me some herbal tea to soothe my throat so I could finally eat! Boy was it worth it!! This is not the Hogan's Hideaway you might remember. It might be helpful if it had an entirely new name as not to confuse former diners. Had it been called something else, I wouldn't have gone there that night. We went last month, it was a Saturday night. I thought it was odd that the parking lot was empty and only 5 tables sat the entire time we were there. Having lived within walking distance for many years, we were used to it being packed, waiting for a table with drinks in hand, etc. We both ordered French onion soup as that was a favorite in the former restaurant. It was nothing like the former recipe. My husband loved his meal. He had a pork chop special and it was huge. It also came with a hefty price...I understand that it is locally sourced, farm to table, but we eat at many area restaurants with this practice and don't pay this price. I had the fried chicken. I didn't enjoy it and it was also pricy. We were shocked when we got the bill...the cost of the wine that I buy at home was more per glass than I'd expect, the coffee was more, the overall cost of the entrees felt ridicules. We spent more there than the last time we dined at Good Luck, Veneto, Max's Chophouse, and Grinelle's. Our server was wonderful and knew the menu completely. She was helpful and friendly and handled each table in the restaurant with ease. I didn't dislike the new decor but was confused that the upstairs bar was dark and there is a new bar near the front door...it was just different. I hear there is sushi but I wasn't there when it was sushi time and I'd likely not get sushi there since sushi and "Hogan's" don't go together in my mind. That is unfair of me though because perhaps it is the best sushi around. What I wish...I wish I'd have gone that night to order French Onion, a crab cake, and salad with the lovely dressing I remembered. I find it hard to see how area renters will become regulars if they are priced out and I don't know if other diners will come to pay top dollar when the city is saturated with options. Ok, I'm confused it's no longer Hogan's or Hogan's Hideaway or whatever it is.. now it's The Hideaway? All I remember is they were closed for over six months plus, re opened and it was still ok at best and now it's a new name and..... the Menu looks like the other sort of... the Brie Burger is good, I had the Beet Salad with Chicken it was tasty and a lot of salad. A great dressing and local cheese it was actually very good but it became a fairly expensive salad... They push local, sustainable and etc. The inside is nice, you actually come thru the entrance on Park Ave not thru the back. Service is nice, but since we had no cocktails or alcoholic drinks I got the feeling like we were a bother.. but get this it was only the two of us in the place on a Thursday at 4:45 pm gee so sorry. I've lived in Rochester for three years now and whatever this place is I wish they would find their voice or whatever. If your not a meat eater and you want app's I don't know what to tell you. Hopefully they can adapt things for you. I know they do brunch and etc but maybe it's just me.. I was hoping to have a local place I could walk to for lunch or dinner but I'm not too inspired. This is the sort of place you go for brunch if you like the following: - A loud environment with little sound dampening making having a conversation pretty shit - Waiting 10-15 minutes just for coffee - Waiting another 15 to place your food order - Waiting well over an hour for anything to actually show up on your table - The food that does show up is uncooked eggs or cold dishes that they try to pass off as a complimentary dish because they didn't know how to cook eggs... which was there special omelette of the day. My wife and I used to be regulars at Hogan's before it shut down and switched hands. We were in the market for some brunch and thought to revisit this place to see if it had returned to it's former glory. What transpired was one of the worst dining experiences I have had to date and I have gotten food poisoning from Taco Bell. Initial impression was fine but the redecoration and modernized layout has kind of killed the charm Hogan's used to have. Now it feels like some shit pub. Our waiter seemed to be the only one working... on Sunday... for brunch. Seemed understaffed. We asked for coffee and for as long as it took, you would think they ran out and had to roast their own beans. One of our cups had a dried crusty ring of day old coffee on it as well. It took 2 reminders and 20 minutes to get a replacement. We then placed food orders after sitting idle for about 30 minutes, never being checked on once. After that we didn't see our waiter for 40 minutes. After which time he showed up without food and only offered an apology and said it would be out soon. Soon ended up being another 20 minutes. When it showed up, 50% of what we had ordered was undercooked or raw. Every omelette of the day was mostly runny scrambled egg and cold. The waiter apologized and sent the manager our way, but not after taking one of the omelettes away and offering up an extra order of the corned beef hash that no one at the table ordered and felt as if it had been refrigerated and never reheated prior to serving. The manager took a good 15 minutes to find our table and the apology seemed a bit insincere. All in all, it seems like whoever is running this place is in over their head(s). I have been here a few times since the new ownership and even rented out the back bar for my birthday party. We had about 20 people and enjoyed the bar and ordered appetizers.The food is fantastic and I've never experienced bad service. We were there most recently just hanging out at the bar and the bartender was friendly and engaging. The place is spacious and the bathrooms are clean. Coffee came without cream and sugar and our food took 1 1/2 hours to arrive- the waiter checked in once during that wait and assured us it was coming right out. We went here the other night and were very disappointed. I was hoping for a nice soup to warm me up on a cold night but they only served French onion (yuck) and COLD squash soup. Who wants cold soup in October? I settled on a salad. The croutons were burned, there was not enough salad dressing, and the salmon had absolutely no flavor. I actually never cared for the old Hogan's Hideaway...but my wife did. We were in town for the Thanksgiving holiday and stopped for lunch. It was easily one of my top 5 worst dining experiences. The service was incredibly slow. Can't emphasize that one enough. We had to reorder our drinks and they never did bring two of them. The kids menu is only buttered noodles and beware they don't have plastic cups...we broke a glass one. In total it took us almost 2 hours to have lunch. On the positive side, my burger was average, the staff did try to be helpful when we saw them and they did take our drinks off the bill. One of these reviews said they thought the owners or staff were in over their head and I'd agree. There are so many great places to eat in Rochester. Don't waste your time with this one. read more

Awesome neighborhood restaurant. Since they have updated the menu, hideaway is always a go-to lunch spot. On many occasions, I have met up with friends for a late lunch and it was comfortable, food is awesome, service is good and no one rushed us. We always have a chill time at The Hideaway. Max Gordon from Hideway catered our daughter's wedding. The dinner was exceptional. Does not matter if the order was steak, chicken, salmon or vegetarian. Each meal was prepared to a perfection, with right flavor and presentation. It was very satisfying to see Max around making sure our guests were happy with the food of their choice. Max and his team contributed to a perfect dinner for our daughter's wedding. It will be memorable to all of us. Max is a young professional, with a lot of potential for a successful future in this field. He is very welcoming, listens to the customer's needs and delivers his promise. First of all the outside could use a little sprucing up it just looks like ypur standard Irish pub, not inviting, the outside kinda says "we are closed" to me, dark & blah, I will say that, the concept of this resturaunt is a great one, just executed poorly. The inside is dark (its a bar so that is to be expected) however traditionally in pub/resturaunt combos you will see the bar is darker & the dining area is generally more well lite, the inside is "trendy" & cute, but also lacks character. I love the fact that there is a speak-easy in the back, although it feels like a missed their opportunity, they could have their staff dressed in attire from the prohibition era, get a themed cocktails menu & some old fashioned drinks, also currently there is NO SEPARATE COCKTAIL MENU, which was surprising, they also DID NOT HAVE A WINE MENU, when I inquired about a wine list the server didnt offer much assistance, I got "we have red or white" when I asked about origin of the wine I got "its Italian" REALLY? Why if you're going for a farm to table vibe WHY OH WHY WOULD YOU NOT OFFER NYS WINES? THEY ARE LOCAL! Okay at this point I am kinda getting a bad taste for this place, the server didnt seem to know much about anything offered,he was curt,somewhat rude & dismissive when we asked questions, he seems distracted & we felt like a hindrance to him. Okay well moving on to the food, I WISH I could say this was their redeeming quality, I can overlook a lot of the things I mentioned if the food is fabulous, but sadly I can not. So this place just put a bunch of random (honestly no idea how they chose this menu, it is all over the place)things on the menu, then they threw some random, weird ingredients on or in regular items, & they are trying to pass it off as unique, which nothing is. I ordered burger which had pickled onion(huh?) on it & pickled cucumber I say cucumber because it is certainly not a PICKLE, it was a cucumber dunked in some weird variation of brine,just weird. In addition to these weird toppings, in took them 25 minutes to cook burgers & fries! Maybe that is how long it took to make the "pickles?" Seriously though, 25 minutes! We where literally THE ONLY GUESTS IN THE PLACE! On top of that I requested mine MED/WELL at best I got medium & most likely RARE/MED because it was pink all around with a RED center & cold (what were they doing in that 25 minutes? I didnt even eat it, I just broke it in half to see how pink it was. So in conclusion the wait staff needs better training, the cooks need additional training, the owners need to work on their "brand" & rethink somethings. All that needs to happen before this resturant is the "hip & trendy" place the owners are trying to make it into. This little out-of-the-way place was a lovely stop for brunch on a rainy Sunday. It had a nice relaxed atmosphere, the food was delicious, and the wait staff was wonderful.
