Cornwall can be a pretty idle place for visitors, especially in the evenings, if they don't know the right sort of places to head to. We were lucky to venture into the Heavitree Arms at the only evening we spent at Exmouth this summer.
This is what a pub should be like ... lively, raucous and totally out of control ... that's exactly what a Saturday evening should be, isn't it ?
The indoor portion of the pub is spread over two levels and looks pretty standard. What seemed to stand out was the crowd. They were in a celebratory mood for no apparent reason. The ambience was better than what i find in London even during Chelsea vs Arsenal matches.
My friends and i got our drinks and sat at a table in the courtyard outside, which was also brimming with people. There were several events. One that i recognised was a bachelorette party. Jägermeister was conducting some kind of a promotional event in which a number of pretty girls were going around the pub selling glasses of Jägerbomb for only £1.50 each. How could i resist the temptation ? I ended up consuming quite a few ... thankfully, i wasn't the designated driver :)
On the table next to us was a really inebriated middle-aged woman with 3-4 friends. She was desperately trying to take the whole table and throw it over the railing onto the side-walk on the other side, whereas a policeman was trying his best to make sure that doesn't happen. He had to kick her arse (playfully of course) quite a few times before she relented. On another table there were a few people who were flashing. There was no dearth of entertainment here :)
The binge drinking we indulged in at the Heavitree Arms became one of the unexpected highlights of our Cornwall trip. Cheap alcohol and entertainment made it one of the better evenings of the year. read more
