Come for the saving, stay for the quality. By not providing non-essential things like hairdryers (but there are power sockets if you want to bring one), towels (again, bring your own) or Wifi (seriously, who needs that in a gym?!) this gym can pass on the saving, meaning they can offer a rolling month-by-month membership for just £16 (and I think there's a wee joining fee of about £20). Compared to a huge number of gyms in the city, that's almost obscenely low. Pennies! Plus, if you know you're not going to make it there for a month, which is especially applicable in Edinburgh (cough August cough) then you can suspend your membership and skip all but £5 of that month's payment. Niiiice.
But how does the budget translate to the gym itself? Well, when I was at university in Exeter, I paid more than double this membership to be with Fitness First, and there's no contest. The Gym Edinburgh is lighter, more spacious, more welcoming, and the equipment is not only top-notch but also plentiful. I can't think you'd often have to queue for a treadmill. All the same, I like to go quite late at night (it's open 24/7) since it's quieter, although I've never been there alone. I don't think I'd feel unsafe if it happened though!
The atmosphere is really something else too; I used to feel intimidated at my last gym but everyone just gets on and trains here. There is a timetable of free classes, as well, which I've yet to explore but looks very comprehensive. You can get a personal trainer at extra cost if you want to. If you forget a padlock for the lockers, there's a vending machine selling them for a couple of quid. I love that. A padlock vending machine. Whee! Novelty points.
The showers are surprisingly good. They're on a motion-sensor so you might have to do a little boogie or tap the sensor if you find yourself right in the middle of sculpting a fine shampoo mohican when the water cuts out, but better that than a wasteful shower which goes on streaming after someone's lazily wandered out of the cubicle without switching it off. The jet seems to be at quite a wide angle - not a problem for me as I'm tall but I wonder how effective it would be if I were nearer the ground and the jets a little further apart. Still, like I said, not a problem for me.
When I stopped going to my last gym, it was of course initially due to my own lack of commitment, but the wry looks I'd get from the staff on the occasions I went after not going for a while put me right off even bothering. But I joined this gym back in March of this year; in May I came down with a virus or something, which affected my breathing quite badly, and I couldn't do anything energetic for a couple of months - then it was the Fringe when I worked six days a week - and eventually it ended up being October before I managed to get back there. But when I did - I can't believe I'm saying this about a gym; ME, the sworn cake'n'couch devotee - it was like coming home. read more
