My second favorite pub in Aberdeen closely behind Prince of Wales. Like PoW there is a history, even more so here. A late 1800's restaurant turned bar in the 1930's. One of the only places in the city that is included in CAMRA's list for historic pub interiors. This was a men only place for a long time (I guess that was the law for while), and still has a bit of that reputation. Though everyone, and all tastes are welcome now obviously. There is a long mahogany wood bar that goes the length of the narrow establishment. Paneled mahogany wood walls, and an impressive oval shaped ceiling. No chairs, this is a place for standing. Some booths around the perimeter. With PoW and The Grill, Aberdeen has to have two of the longest bars in the country.
Three or for casks. Always something from a great local brewery, Deeside. The casks are always in good condition. Though the show here is the whiskey selection. If you are reading this, or familiar with the place at all you know they have one the biggest selections of whiskeys in the world. The shear number is not what impresses me most. It is t he quality of the selection. Scotches that go back to the 30's. Whiskeys from Japan, Ireland, and Bourbons. Aw inspiring. If you are having trouble choosing, the bartenders are very welcoming and have great recommendations. Along with a full menu, tasting flights, and books to read up on.
A tiny kitchen, with snacks, and small nibbles. Haggis anyone? Very traditional Scottish fare, that to my surprise has always been very good.
This is one of those places that you have to experience once for the history alone. Then you will get lulled back because of what a great pub it actually is. read more
