Fabulous dinner and for London, great service. My husband and I had dinner this past Saturday night. We split the sourdough with date butter. The bread - four good-sized pieces- had the perfect chewy texture. The butter is creamy and spreads easily on the bread; it tastes perfect, with date flavour but not too sweet. The butter portion was a bit small so the waitress happily gave us another small pot when we asked for it. I then ordered the roasted pumpkin with tahini, yogurt and coriander oil. I could have licked the plate, it was that phenomenal. I also ordered the marinated aubergine with tahini and pine nuts. This was very good but the pumpkin blew it away. I only wish there were more pumpkin pieces!! My husband got the fried chicken and really enjoyed it. He has a high bar as a Georgia native and he was pleasantly pleased. read more

AMAZING! This was one of my first experiences with Israeli inspired food and it was delicious. I went for dinner when I was visiting the area and I wish I stayed longer so I could try their breakfast as well. The wait staff and chefs were extremely friendly and gave honest recommendations. They knew the menu well and we were very happy with our decisions. Dishes were easy to share which made it possible to try many different things. The honey butter with the cornbread was one of my favorites! The Good Egg is in a great location on Church Street. We were able to walk right in for dinner (although it was on the later side so we may have missed the crowd). I am excited to come back to Stoke Newington to visit my sister and try their breakfast next time. She says it is her favorite but I can't wait to try it for myself. read more

Why is Church Street so awesome? The Good Egg has a big part in that. How to describe this Israeli influenced brunch restaurant with all of its interesting choices? Breakfast in pita buns are all very delicious and have the right mix of savoury and fresh. You can also get the big breakfast and choose two to three items to try a handful of treats, again all very delicious. There are long line ups for a reason! One of the best places I've eaten at in London. I adored every single dish I had here. I loved the sabich (holy cow!). I tried making it at home in LA and I failed. (Why is there no amba in LA!?) I wish I lived near this place; I'd go every morning! I love their use of parsley. I usually hate parsley but somehow they've made it palatable to me. We also had a fish dish with some sauce (I forgot what it was called) and that was also super good. I would take it easy when ordering, however. Though the dishes appear small, they filled me up very fast (and I'm fat--look at me, haha!). I barely finished the fish dish. Next time I'm in town, I will definitely return! read more

I've read a lot about this place and have had some great feedback from friends who have visited often. Reading the other reviews this seems the sort of place that accommodates a breakfast or a brunch very nicely. I decided that my first visit would be for dinner, of course..... Stoke Newington still remains one of the coolest places in London with it's quaint streets and Hipster vibe. It's a great community, feeling more like a village than a North London suburb. The High Street feels like it hasn't been touched by time, with it's huge variety of independent retailers and restaurants. Just a lovely place to visit. The Good Egg sits on Church Street amidst the amazing bars, pubs and restaurants. A lovely traditional store front greets you into an open plan kitchen and cafe style dining room. 90's music, pickled vegetables on the book shelves and pleasant staff all add to the charming environment. The menu is simple and the dishes are designed to be shared. It really is the sort of place where you should order everything! The exceptionally generous prices add to this. A party of four, as we were on our visit, enjoyed 11 dishes and even this didn't seem quiet enough. Coming in at £35 per head including two bottles of wine, it really was exceptionally priced. Food arrives quickly and without regard to order timing. Dishes come to the table as they are ready to leave the kitchen. I don't know whether I would like this anywhere else but for some reason it seems to work here. Perhaps it would have been nice to create a single dish by combining small portions of each dish but this isn't such a big issue. The style of food is mixed. From fried chicken to dak dak salad (I had both of these by the way and they were just fantastic). The Good Egg seems to cover all bases. You might think that with such a wide ranging style of menu, that some of the dishes may be weaker than others but this simply is not the case. EVERYTHING is good here. And this brings me to my final remark. The quality of the food here deserves better than a 4 star review. Food alone and you're talking 5 stars easily. However food alone does not the experience create. We visited on a busy Thursday night, a late booking and the restaurant was heaving. Closing at 11, we were enjoying the food, the wine, the environment and each others company in this lovely restaurant. To my disappointment at 10.30 and rather abruptly the music was turned off, the lights were turned on and it was made very clear to us that our time had run its course. Our waitress even remarked as we were paying our bill "it's weird without any music on, isn't it". Indeed it was. A disappointing end to an otherwise very nice evening. read more

The good egg has to be one of my favourite brunches in London! It's To share the cornbread and the avocado and baked eggs are great options. I had the shashuka with merguez sausage! Holy smokes it was good! It was served in the coolest little iron pans that keeps the food super hot- one tip take your time!! I've had a few fun boozy brunches in here too, although £7-£9 cocktails seem a little bit pricey considering the size! The general atmosphere is endearing and exciting! All the staff are very sweet and helpful along with being efficient and on it with the orders! 5 stars all round for me! read more

This place is near the top of my London food recs list! I shared the challah french toast, sabih, labneh (see my photos) and each was incredible. Not only was every dish gorgeous to look at, they were scrumptious, too. I enjoyed the aesthetic of the restaurant; it has a very clean and simple design. One thing to note: there was a long queue the morning I went, which I imagine is not uncommon. While I appreciated that the owners were mindful of the amount of people they let into the restaurant at once, I was confused as to why, with plenty of empty tables, many costumers were still asked to queue outside. I do remember them stating a reason, I just can't for the life of me recall it. They did, also, taking people's drink orders, so that we could at least sip on a hot drink while waiting in the cold, though. In any case, it was worth the wait, but if they could sort the queuing situation that would make things perfect. I loved my breakfast time visit so much that I returned for dinner. The food was still delicious, but when I go back I'll be returning for breakfast -- it was in a league of its own. read more

This is the best place I have ever been. The food is so delicious, the staff are so incredibly friendly and fast, and the atmosphere is gorgeous. The queue can get intense, but that's purely because it's so damn good in there. My advice, arrive 40 minutes before you want to eat and take the opportunity to have a stroll in nearby Clissold Park to work up an appetite if you aren't seated straight away. read more

Met friends here for brunch and it was delicious. Service was great too. We 5 took up a table for a long time and they didn't seem to mind. Bloody sunshine drink is like a Bloody Mary only uses yellow tomatoes instead to make it yellow. Unfortunately they had none so it was red instead. Tasty but not as spicy as I'm used to in the states. Babka with hazelnut and cinnamon had to be ordered as it reminded me of my nana from years ago and it was as I remembered. I then had simple fried eggs which were cooked to order. They did find it strange that I wanted fruit on the side. Maybe fruit with breakfast is a U. S. thing. Everyone else got fancier meals and seemed happy. So why 4 stars? This was a really expensive brunch. Yes I am aware we had drinks. But I've been traveling in London for a week now and this was the first time gratuity was added to my check. At least at home I get to decide how much to tip. I found that rude and unexpected. So plan on that in advance, and otherwise enjoy the meal. read more

The Good Egg is a lovely, spacious, open-plan café where you can see the chefs at work creating your orders whilst sitting amongst books and ingredients. The menu itself is quite big with a definite Lebanese vibe running throughout. There was also cocktails and the usual hot drinks. We tried the bourek which was filled with goat's cheese, apricot and walnut. It came on a metal tray with a tomato and cucumber salad, tahini, a boiled egg and home-made pickles. These were delicious, I'd want to take these with me everywhere. The bourek didn't work with the filling, but the potential was there as the general style of this café was at quite a good standard and the bourek was well cooked. The cheese choice was just too delicate, leaving the filling dry. The tahini was nice and the salad was of a decent size. Then we tried the bacon pita, this came with a date drizzle, fried egg, salad and another flavour I couldn't quite work out. This was lovely, my friend said it was too sweet but I found it a welcome change. Would have been better had it come with salad and pickles as a complete plate. This was the best conceived dish. The baked eggs were slightly disappointing, it tasted like there was a whole tin of tomatoes in a cast iron pan, just a raw, acidic taste, horrible. The merguez sausage would have benefited from being closer to the surface to be alittle charred instead of steaming under the tomatoes. Same goes for the halloumi. Overall, I quite liked this place, just a couple of tweaks would make it better, service was fast and straight-forward. The vibe was relaxing and felt like an easy Sunday morning. read more

Grilled cornbread served with butter and I can't remember the name but a delicious parsley condiment that I would buy by the jar and possibly bathe in. Brunchy perfection! My dining companion and I both had the shakshuka (she with haloumi, i plain) and it was so beautiful we both immediately burnt our tongues wanting to taste it and ignoring the obviously incredibly hot pans they came out in. Nevertheless sopped up every last bit of sauce (so peppery and delicious). Had to stop myself from ordering a slice of the fresh babka which was on the counter just to the side of me (would have popped). Followed it up with a lovely walk through the Abney Park cemetery, just across the street. Perfect afternoon. read more

A very new and fresh menu. There are a lot of classics with a twist like the halva croissant or the bacon and egg pita with date paste. I've been there twice so far and the food is delicious. The atmosphere is very nice too, like a clean and posh diner might be, but not sterile. I'm afraid the only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is the wait staff as they seem to need some more training in what's on the menu, cleaning tables and clearly taking orders, etc., however, they are very nice. read more

Good atmosphere, good food and coffee -- I wanted to try this new place as it seemed a step up from the more tea-room style cafe places along Stoke Newington Church Street and I'm happy to say I liked it greatly and will be back. The brunch offer mixes familiar and unusual: I had a 'Jerusalem plate' with borek, pickles, yoghurt and salad, but I was keen to try the shakshuka too -- next time. A definite boon to the area -- I hope it does very well. One suggestion: there is a large forecourt outside which, I'd imagine, the GE hopes will become a sort of dining terrace when summer rolls around. In the meantime, perhaps it could be used as a mini car park for the standard-issue N16 prams and strollers that use up the space where another couple of diners could fit in? read more
