Let's just start by saying that I spend roughly 9 hours at the property which was about 9 hours too…read moremuch. I was not a fan and for ease of reading, I'll break down as follows: THE GOOD: *Prime location if you are traveling via train as it's literally adjacent to the Reading Station. In fact, the hotel overlooks the car loop. *Centrally located in the city centre, if thats your need or desire. THE NEEDS ATTENTION: *Where do I start as there is so much that really requires attention. I was told that this used to be a popular chain in the UK which seems to have had a major downturn in recent times. The overall sentiment here is that the property needs a real good scrubbing and updating. *The design is dark. Super dark. To the point that literally one lightbulb is illuminating the surface areas. This doesn't work well in the bathroom when in need of virtually anything requiring a mirror. *The guest room was fair at best - the carpet was stained and held a film of fifth that I did not feel comfortable walking around w/out shoes. The doors didn't have a secure closure. My safe did not function at all. There was a stench of extreme body odor in the room which I believe originates from zero to little air flow due to... *The rooms feature a key card light switch which means you have to place your room key card in a slot to activate the lights and HVAC in the room. I understand this as an efficiency play however it doesn't do well for the room setting as there is zero air flow when you vacate the room. It's also an outdated system often found at the cheaper hotel properties. Not a fan as there are better ways to accomodate sustainability. *The bed was fairly stiff and featured just two tiny bed pillows - of all areas to scale back on, this was a head scratcher. It didn't have a fresh or overly clean sense to it. *The towels need to be refreshed and more fluffy. *The bathroom overall was depressing - dark, dingy and smelly. Oddly enough the hot faucets displayed a custom printed tag warning that the pipe can get extremely hot. The fixtures are very dated. Again the lighting in here is atrocious. I don't think the floors were properly cleaned in years. *The walls and ceiling are paper thin. I think a heard of elephants were staying in the room above me on the 4th floor as I heard loud footsteps throughout the night and early AM for hours while I was waking up. So odd as the rooms are fairly small - how could so much walking occur. *My view was of a wall outside so nothing to note of there. Unless you need a hotel of a certain price point and location, I'd consider elsewhere.

This property was not my original Reading reservation. Without berating another property just a few blocks away, suffice it to say when I called from the other place that I was dissatisfied with and was going to leave after being in my room there for a matter of minutes after a day that started at 4am in another country, the Forbury came through. At the last minute on a night when there was an event in the facility, Hannah found me a wonderful room, and was the most pleasant and helpful professional I've experienced in a long while. They were booked solid, and she took things to a level of service that one could easily consider legendary. The hotel itself is already well known, we'll documented, and is of course wonderfully well appointed. The rooms in the variations I have experienced this trip are warmly decorated and fitted with class and comfort, but the heated wood floors were especially perfect during the cold front that just blew through and left a bit of snow... But the service... THAT is what brings me back and leads me to evangelize businesses, and employees like Hannah are what truly make good businesses great. The Forbury is great.

They said they could do check-in till 3am if I paid for the 2 night stay I required. I thought great, so I booked and paid. When it became apparent on Sunday morning that I wouldn't finish and make check-in at 3am, I rang several times to speak to someone at the hotel, but there was no answer. I finished my walk at 07:00 hours after walking 23 hours continuously. I rang the hotel at 9 am to explain what had happened, and the gentleman at the desk was rude and bluntly told me that my room had been cancelled as I was a no-show. I tried to explain that I tried to call the hotel during the night to say I would definitely be there in the morning. He couldn't care less and responded with i started work at 7am. How do I know what the night staff do! I had at this point been awake for 29 hours, very tired, 128 miles away from home, nowhere to go, and on my own. Essentially, I was stranded and a vulnerable lone woman. When I told him this, he said I could book a room, but I would have to pay for it and wouldn't be able to check in till 3pm. I had already paid for a room, I told him. I had to end the conversation there as I was totally and utterly blown away by his responses and just stood and cried, physically and emotionally drained. I sat on a park bench for 3 hours, nodding on and off and waiting for my son, who drove all the way from Nottingham to Henley On Thames to pick me up. For a well-known hotel company like Ibis to treat its customers like this is despicable

And it's less than half the price than the other hotels in Reading! As part of a worldwide chain, Ibis/Accor have a certain standard they have to maintain and this property does that. The room is small-ish, but there's more than enough space for getting around and the work desk area is good with two (UK) power outlets. Yes, the bed is a lot on the firm side, but it was comfortable enough. The window leaks cold air like a sieve, but if you close the curtain, you can fight and win the temperature battle with judicious use of tactical heating via the thermostat. The bathroom is exactly what Brent described - it's a pod. A self-contained unit that looks exactly like what I encountered on a recent cruise ship. The shower is big and roomy with two glass doors (like an old west saloon) and good counter space for spreading out all of your stuff. The water is extra wet! Small TV with a dozen or so channels, a water heater with coffee/tea makings. Loads of storage under the bed for suitcases, meaning that you're not constantly tripping over them. Located a very short walk from the Reading Station, it's right in the middle of town centre, which means it's a short walk to the Oracle and the Broad Street Mall. It's definitely inexpensive, but I don't think it's cheap. It has a certain market segment and it does it well. I would stay here again.

When I arrived, I was paced in a room that the bathtub did not drained so I could not take a shower after landing from a 10 hour flight. It took 3 or 4 times to ask for the front desk to address the situation. They offer complimentary water but there are no water bottles in the room. I called for after hour food service (room service) and they never answered and I had to walk to the main lobby to obtain service and only to find out that they were out of what I ordered 20 minutes later and I had to wait another 15 minutes before the food made it to my room. The breakfast buffet is amazing and worth it! I forgot to tale pictures but there is everything that you can think of. Dinner was a bit slow and it took me about 10 to 15 minutes before I placed a drink request. The service could improve as they seem to be very disorganized. I had to wait or get their attention so I could placed my order and what I wanted for dessert. The food was great but the service is slow. Overall it is an okay experience with clean rooms. If you are aware of what I shared and have low expectations, then you can give them a 5 stars. However, of you are expecting the basic service. That it is all that I am going to say.
