Wonderful & welcoming staff. It's okay to come a bit early to relax on their huge comfy sofa to let your mind begin its wind down. Have you ever felt awake yet asleep at once? It's an experiencing you cannot explain until you've tried it. I've tried all three of their floating mediums and it each is its own. Couples can float together in the floatarium and embark in a journey together that is out of this world. Don't bother thinking of doing the no-no cause you're in a extremely dense salt to water ratio... You may never do the no-no again! In the room there are dual shower heads so you're ready for the day or night afterward. I initially enjoyed floataway tranquility when I first began floating, but have come to enjoy the open float more. Once is covered, one is not... I think it depends on the mood I'm in. The staff are incredibly wonderful people, so knowledgable in their field of floating. They explain floating well for those who have never experienced it and enjoy connecting with patrons after their float whether it is the first or 100th float. They truly care about the experience of their customers that make floating here especially worth while. You're provided with the basic of amenities for your shower before/after a float including a towel. There's tea and water awaiting your arrival and departure... My first float experience was at The Float Shoppe a few months ago. I had an amazing time and just booked my second float session. The float lasted for about 90 minutes in a sensory deprivation tank. Each tank is in its own private room, which has towels and a shower for you to rinse off in before and after your float. Depending on which tank you're in--I was in the Floataway Tranquility tank--there is a button for a "night-light" inside the tank, which I used it a couple times when I first got situated. But once my nerves calmed down floating just felt like a long savasana. It allowed me to completely relax and my mind and thoughts weren't going a hundred miles an hour like it usually does. The owners, Sandra and Dylan, took the time to explain floating, made sure you were comfortable and at ease, and were very attentive to your needs. They showed genuine interest and care in the customers I saw them interact with that day. This made for a great pre- and post-float experience. (There's also complimentary kombucha for you to enjoy after your float!) I'm definitely looking forward to my next float session, especially since it's in their new open tank! read more

This was my first float and I had no idea what to expect. Luckily, the staff here are all so friendly and I was told in great detail what to expect. After fidgeting for a bit (pillow, no pillow, stretching arms above head to get my shoulders to relax), I settled down and thought that there was no way I'd stay there for 90 minutes. Then, after a series of weird waking dreams, the tinkle of music floated in the water. Wow. I was so noodle-y and relaxed, I went to bed at 10 pm and didn't wake up until 12 hours later (something I haven't done since I was a teen). I was still relaxed the day after, AND the day after (despite dealing with planes, trains, and more trains). I'm going to find one near me. I'd definitely do it again! read more

They're close, but need to make some adjustments. First off, the water is not buoyant enough, like they haven't added enough epsom salt. This tends to make you move around more than normal and causes ripples and rocking... and also, annoyingly, touch the bottom if you change position. I've floated in other tanks with higher concentrations, and these issues have never occurred. This criticism was echoed by another friend of mine who tried them out too. Second, I could see pinpoints of light coming into the tank -- very annoying in a "sensory deprivation" experience. Lastly, they need some mats or something on the floor. I slipped and almost bit it upon leaving the shower. Really nice, friendly owners. Hope they tweak things to make this a satisfying option. Tried floating for the first time this weekend. It was an interesting experience. I was a bit too hyper in the tank so I wasn't able to relax much. That said, I know you're supposed to float a few times before you really feel the effect. My personal opinion is that 90 minutes is too long, but again, maybe if I were to go back a few more times I wouldn't fee that way. The cleanliness factor kind of creeps me out too. This is probably another personal issue, heh. The staff were incredibly kind! Super thorough on their explanation of how floating works. The rooms could have been set up a little nicer - maybe a place to get ready afterwards since the one bathroom isn't always available. A bigger mirror at least. And the option to turn a heater on. It's freezing after you get out of the tank and shower. The shampoo and conditioner scent is fantastic. I have no idea what it is, but I want it! I'm an SF native and was in Portland with wife for a weekend getaway. This floating business made our weekend! First of all if you are at all spiritually minded, you have to try this, because it is like an out of body experience...so much of your sensory input is taken away, that you can start to believe that you have 'ceased to exist' and yet there you are, conscious of your consciousness. Its tripping me out just thinking about it, even now. The Float Shoppe itself was staffed with some very kind and helpful people, who explained everything to us carefully and patiently. My pod had no light on the inside, and had a manual hatch, which made it a scarier but more awesome experience. My wife's had buttons on the inside for lights and door openings, so a little fancier, but I kind of liked my bare bones version. Tried the late night 2 hr float for my first experience. I was unsure when I first began - but I quickly relaxed and woke up over an hour later. Time past quickly. I enjoyed my experience and would highly recommend Float Shop. They were professional and helpful. The room I was in was clean. I do wish that I had requested my water be a little warmer. I have severe Reynauds and the temp triggered a flare than kinda ruined my experience, but that is no fault of theirs. I had my first floating experience with The Float Shoppe this week and it was really interesting! I had been recommended to try floating by many coworkers and im always looking for new spiritually-engaging activities, so I was instantly down for it. The location is prime, in a really sweet old house. We were greeted happily and invited to the zen room for a foot soak and a read about Floating. This was really nice and we arrived early to enjoy it, but I do wish it was a bit more separated from the reception area. The noise takes away from the relaxation a bit. We had a nice chat about what to expect and what it would be like, then escorted to our rooms (my boyfriend and I both did it). He had the tank with internal buttons, I had the one without. The water was really nice and I had no qualms about floating. I also used the earbuds - highly recommended. It took me quite some time to really settle into it. Twice I got a bit freaked out being in the dark and opened the hatch to chill out. (I'd be the kind of person that benefits from having lights inside). At one point I did feel very relaxed, but my mind ran a lot. The physical restlessness I felt (or just boredom, perhaps) was what got me. I ended up getting out and showering after 55 minutes because I couldn't calm the restlessness anymore. This is mainly just my personal experience. I am a hyper, afraid-of-the-dark kinda gal, so it doesn't say anything about The Float Shoppe or floating really. I think it's an awesome idea, a really great location, and I'll definitely do it again. I think that after a few times of settling into it, I can see how it'd be beneficial. I left feeling physically great and definitely wanting to return. If I had any criticism it'd be that I wish there was a shorter time period for first time floaters, if they want it. 90 minutes is a long time and had I not used a Groupon, I would've felt like I didn't get my money's worth. Been here several times and I have nothing but great things to say about this place. The staff is always friendly and inviting, and they never make you feel like you are inconvenience if you ask questions. If you've never tried floating before, I would highly recommend it. It's just as relaxing as a massage in my opinion. I highly suggest you arrive early so you have a chance to wind down and relax before your float. The last time I was here, I got the float sandwich which is a 90 minute float, a 60 min massage, and then another 90 min float. Hands down best customer service ever. I came in with a groupon for 3, they put me in the wrong tank and gave me another free session. Coming from singapore, this was a big deal because they never really have this standard of customer service in my country. Anyway, besides that, they have a nice vibe throughout the place; there is art everywhere, a hot foot bath and it feels pretty zen throughout. As a fighter, floating has really helped my concussions whenever i get them as all my senses are shut down for 90 minutes. It really is the best feeling in the world to turn off all your senses when any form of light and sound irritates you. When you're done, there's an acai bowl right outside the float shoppe which makes the experience even better. 10/10 reccommended. read more

What brought me into the Float shoppe the first time was honestly me going through a big break up. I was doing all the yoga, and the errands, and getting my work done efficiently. I was hurting on the inside, but taking care of everything on the outside. I was not giving myself the time I needed to just sit. I needed a space to attempt to fully let go. I had heard about float tanks and thought to myself I need to utilize this service and just see what would happen. I went in there, the owner greeted me with a wonderful smile and an open ear. Went in the room with the float and was as open minded as I could be. I was a little nervous at first. I didn't know what to expect. I began to feel like a child. Bouncing around and getting a feel for the space. I didn't realize how buoyant I was going to be either! It was wonderful :) It took me a while but I started to settle into the space and slow down. I wasn't bouncing as much, wasn't moving as often. I started to dive into my thoughts. I started allowing my thoughts to come in and just observe where I was in my life and what thought patterns come up. It felt like a self experiment. As time went on I started hearing my own heart beat. That was a very powerful moment for me. After the float, I slowly got out of the tank. I heard every movement I took due to the silence. It was refreshing. I felt so calm and easygoing afterwards.Yes, I have receive benefits after the float. I get to look directly at myself in the float. It grounds me and allows me to be aware of what is truly going on. I am better equipped to help myself out with this knowledge. I feel SO SO in the moment after a float. I feel like I am more aware in all aspects.I definitely use massage as a self- care routine. I find massage to be my ultimate relaxation tool. If I could I would get a massage every week. Massages allow my muscles to relax and rehabilitate. I notice less aches from a ski injury I endured. My mood enhances tremendously! I am more equipped to take care of my needs when I have a massage. I have been going to float shoppe for almost 3 years now. I absolutely love environment. I am completely hooked on floating! From the moment I walked in, there was an amazing feeling of calm. Dylan warmly greeted me, offered some tea and explained what to do, what to expect, etc... Walking into the floating room, there was a large "clamshell" where the float will happen. A shower is in the room complete with soap and shampoo. After showering I climbed into the large clamshell. Despite the water only being maybe a foot or so deep, I didn't touch bottom- remember being a kid and wishing you can float magically? This is the closest thing to that! Pressing the button on the left to close the tank lid, the tank became completely dark. I was completely devoid of sight, sound (with the provided earplugs) and touch (somehow you can't feel the water- it's seriously like floating in space!) It was not at all difficult to get used to; it's almost as if the body wants to be this relaxed, and it was completely natural. Almost immediately my mind began to soar. It's really hard to explain. The closest thing I can describe it is like seeing VERY vivid short movies. I thought I was dreaming, so I opened my eyes. Nope, completely awake! The float was 90 minutes which went by FAST, the sound of soft music in the tank let me know my time was up. I crawled out of the tank wishing it wasn't over. So amazing!!! I showered the salt water off and out of my hair. About the salt walter and eyes: don't bring your hands over your face in the tank, it'll get in your eyes (which Dylan will remind you prior to the float) And when you get out, place the small hand towel provided on your forehead, the water will run down into your eyes from your hair. For about 2 days after the float, the relaxed, calm, euphoric feeling continued. I just scheduled another float for myself and hubby (this will be his first float) I can't wait!!! read more

From start to finish this was a really poor experience, both in how they represented themselves and the overall experience in the flotation tank. I had reserved the infinity tank because of claustrophobia, and the website talked about how when you floated it could be in complete darkness or with a light on, which sounded great to me on both. Since floatation therapy is recommended for back injuries I was excited. I arrived 20 minutes early on a very slow day and therefore when I walked in I asked if it would be possible to get started early, and they said no problem. Not actually the case though because all that happened was the receptionist came out to give me their spiel about how I needed to be "open to the floating experience", had me sign a waiver and then told me to go sit down (even though I told them I could not sit down because of a back injury). I ended up not actually starting until my scheduled time, and would have appreciated them actually telling me they couldn't accommodate me early, so I could have gone for a walk or something. The receptionist also had told me that there was a bar to help me get in and out of the tub since I mentioned my back injury. I also mention that I had just had IVF since she had asked what brought me there, and I pretty much got a blank stare. When reviewing the website, there was no indication that in order to use the flotation tanks, you would have to be able to climb a very steep set of stairs. For anyone with a back injury or other issues that keep them from being able to go up stairs, this is inexcusable that it was not mentioned as a requirement for floating, particularly with their no-refund policy if you cancel within 24 hours. I told the man that it would take me a long time to get up those stairs because of my herniated disc, and that I would not have made the appointment if I had known there were stairs, and he just kind of went "aww" and kept going up the stairs at a regular pace. By the time I got to the top of the stairs I was in a lot of pain, but I figured since I was required to * prepay * $70 for this, that I would still give it a try. The room was like a sauna. There was a small lamp in the corner, and NO bars in the tub to help get in or out. Considering the receptionist said it's slippery, my stomach dropped in anxiety about how I was going to get in and out with my injury. When he left I realized there was no way that I could turn the light off and then safely find my way in and out of the tub, not to mention the light was placed in such a way that if you laid down in the tub it would go straight in your eyes, so I placed it on the floor to minimize that. It took 10 minutes to get in the tub because anyone who knows about back injuries knows you can't bend or twist easily. With no bars to hold on to, I was in a high state of anxiety. And since the light could not be turned off safely, there was no sensory deprivation that floatation therapy is known for. You're left staring at a nasty ceiling because even with your eyes closed it's not the same since the light is on. They also did not mention on their website that you should definitely NOT shave the day of. Once I got in, I felt the awful sensation of razor burn up and down my legs that did NOT go away (receptionist said if you do have any cuts you'll feel it right away but it will go away quickly). So not only could I not float in darkness, my legs felt like needles were going in them. I still tried to give it the old college try, and go into meditation mode which is something I can usually very easily do. While I like that there was no pressure on my lower back, even though I'd totally had relaxed my neck and even tried the pillow they recommended, my shoulders were in terrible pain even though they weren't tensed. After ~15 minutes of doing everything in my power to relax, my shoulders and upper back began to cramp and I knew I had to leave. It took me 10 minutes to get out, and by then my back was locked up. In the room they have a bench which if you're 5' 2" is ok but at 5'8" it felt like a kiddie chair, and with my back injury ended up having to put a towel on the edge of the tub and sit there to get my shoes on. I was in pain and went down the wrong stairs (keep the door to that stairwell closed!), so had to do another climb to get to the right staircase. When I got down there the receptionist gave me a blank stare, rather than asking me how I was, and I told her this wasn't going to work because of the pain. She volunteered to get her manager for but honestly there's nothing that would get me to return. Much could have been avoided if they were upfront on the website that they don't accommodate disabilities (the irony here is amazing since it's suggested for people with pain), and my other complaints are things that could be easily fixed. For the price I was incredibly disappointed and cannot recommend this place to anyone. read more

I haven't done a float here yet, I'll update when I do. But I did drop in to try the massage therapy, and had to come review. Best massage I've had in several years! There are several massage therapists, and I spent some time reading bios and felt like I probably wouldn't gel with the ones that are super into reiki or cranio whatnot, so I booked with Sara for a classic deep tissue. Amazing. I came in limping from a rough weekend of sports, and walked out taller, able to bend my ankles, and feeling a million times better. She really helped work out the lactic acid buildup and stiffness. Plus, the waiting area has a hot foot spa, which feels magnificent. There are cabinets with towels, so you can feel free to pop your feet in and then dry off before your treatment or after. I'm really glad I moved into the neighborhood and can make visits to the Float Shoppe a regular thing. read more

I really enjoyed my first float. The workers are all really helpful and friendly. It was a very relaxing experience for me. However, my husband did not have as great a time. He's 6'3" and was placed in the tank downstairs and told it was the only one that would fit him. He says he spent the entire time floating with his feet touching the end and could not get himself to relax. Also, he wasn't told that there's a drainage problem in that room and all of his clothes ended up getting soaked. He was not a happy camper when he had to put those drenched & cold clothes back on at the end. He was frustrated with the experience and that the staff didn't really have anything to say about it other than "sorry we forgot to tell you". So.... if you are less than 6'2" tall you'll have a great time. Otherwise, it might not be for you. :) read more

What a fabulous experience! Convenient location in NW on 23rd. Very relaxed, welcoming vibe in terms of the aesthetics of the place and the staff was wonderful. Anna at reception was very helpful in booking me a last minute service and she was great in person, too. Abraham took care of orientating me with the facility and the floating experience (I had done a float once before about a year ago at a different location). Super sweet and accommodating. Made me feel very comfortable and checked on me after I was done to see what I thought. Overall wonderful service experience. The pod I was in was Tranquility and it was clean and comfortable. The room has a shower and all the hygiene products you need. The 90 minute float was a little long for me, but you can get out whenever you like, so no big deal. I loved it and was completely relaxed and rejuvenated afterward. I highly recommend this! read more

Floating for the first time last Friday! It was great! Very relaxing. I chose to float to help with my stress. I am a CPA and have a hard time managing the stress that comes along with the job. I am a thinker, so it took me a while to turn my mind off. But the peace and quiet allowed me to hear my heart beat and concentrate on breathing. They encourage you to play around to get oriented. It does help. I tested myself trying to sink my foot, and it popped right back up. I pushed my head deeper into the water to prove to my survival instincts that I wasn't going to drown myself. It helped. One I let go, I really sank into that water. I couldn't tell I was even in water at one point - I believe they match the water to your body temp to help with this. I closed the lid to the tank and didn't like that at first, and had to open it back up. But once I relaxed, I closed it again, and it was the right thing for me. I got to the point where I did fall asleep - or at least entered that mode where you are dreaming right away. I woke myself reaching for something in my dream, which resulted in my reaching in the water. Made me laugh. When you first get in, the water is moving, so you move around a tiny bit. Once the water stops moving, you stop moving, and that is when the relaxation starts. I ended up buying a 3 time pass for the price of 2. I can't wait to try this again now that I have the first time out of the way. I can just come in and know exactly what to expect. I am aiming to float every 3 weeks. Thee parking lot is a decent size. 6-7 cars could fit comfortably. Nice accommodation considering the location on NW 23rd! The people are kind, friendly, and really aim to give you a relaxing experience. They are very informative and walk you through the process and what to expect during your first time experience. The rooms are private with dim lighting and windows blacked out. They provide you with a towel, shower, soap, shampoo, q-tips, ear plugs. read more

This was my first float experience, but it definitely won't be my last. The staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. The premise is clean and there is a foot soaking tub in the waiting room, which is spectacular before and after your float. They explained the benefits of soaking using science and their own personal anecdotes. There is a shower in the pod rooms, as well as a pillow, earplugs and toiletries. You don't need to bring anything! After my float, I was even offered tea and a piece of rich chocolate. read more

My father and I visited the Float Shoppe on a weekend in September as we'd heard a great deal about float tanks and about this location in particular. The experience itself was wonderful; the interior is clean, warm and inviting and really provides a relaxing and friendly atmosphere for folks who may be apprehensive or not sure what to expect. What really made the experience memorable was the extraordinary service the staff provided. We were unfortunate enough to have our car towed while we were in the tanks, and upon returning to the shop, the staff sprang into action, helped us find where our car had been towed, and personally drove us to the location to pick it up. The Float Shoppe crew has my deepest and sincerest thanks for their top-tier float tank experience and their incredible generosity for their clients. We will be back again soon! read more

I've been wanting to try this floating business for a while! I am a massage therapist and craniosacral therapist, and am always looking for ways to keep my body feeling tip-top and my mind at ease. I tried going in without expectations, and really think that was a good way to go. Like the literature said, it took probably about half the session to really get comfortable and let the surface anxiety fall away and a range of emotions pass through. I'm definitely interested in trying it again and again to see how each float is different. As far as the facilities go, it's a super-cute house- clean quiet and comfortable. The staff was incredibly friendly and excited to be part of my first floating experience. They explained it all very well so I knew the logistics and how to handle some of the difficulties of relaxing into the experience, a great unknown, for the first time. My tank was a little small, and I can't imagine a larger person being able to float comfortably in there without drifting into the sides. I'm a small person. I felt completely safe and taken care of at the Float Shoppe, and would recommend it to any first-timers. I'm looking forward to trying some other facilities in my home town, Seattle, and seeing what's different about the facilities and the experience! read more

When I discovered the Float Shoppe it was to help the pain with my broken leg, as a new type of "medication free" therapy and it worked amazingly well, completely removing my pain for hours at a time. I was able to go through the the complete process, including surgery, without the aid of pain medication. Since then my bones are healing, the pain is no longer an issue, and I have found that this type of relaxation therapy is now healing my heart, mind and soul. The energy at this place is a spiritual metaphysical miracle. To be in a completely safe environment, total darkness, quiet and to be alone with my thoughts, has brought me to a place of self reflection, that words truly can't describe. I leave every session with a sense of peace that I have never been able to achieve with conventional meditation. My bones are all but healed, and I am eternally grateful that this place was here to help with that healing process, and am now excited to continue with the process to heal my heart, mind and soul. I experienced float therapy yesterday and had a wonderful time. I really loved the silent isolation and found myself meditating and mentally escaping all stress. I had the "pod" and my boyfriend had the open tub. From his response it sounds like the pod is the way to go. I absolutely loved it and the water temperature matched mine so I didn't even know where the water met my body. I would definitely love to go back and will recommend it to others that are open to new experiences. It really does feel like you are floating in space. My boyfriend said he would feel a bit cold due to the openness of the tub. So for him, the 90 minutes went by slowy... but he is also wanting to go back and try out the pod! read more

Float, massage, sometimes both. I've been coming here for over a year and it's great. I do wish it were a little more spacious and the floats were a little more padded with style (feels like I'm entering a spaceship), but otherwise it does the trick. Matthew and Allyne both do a good job with massage and energy work as well. Matthew has a few tricks up his sleeve and will sometimes find the spot you wish he would never find. Owwww and the you walk away feeling ahhhh much better! Haven't tried their new yoga classes so can't speak to those. If you haven't tried floating, you should. It's a unique experience. read more

Had a great first float while visiting our oldest son in Portland. Had never tried floating, heck, had never heard of floating until our son started talking about it. He had gotten us gift certificates, so figured we had nothing to lose. I was slightly apprehensive, as I tend not to 'sit' well, being always moving. Dylan and Sandra were great, super nice. The place is very relaxing and tasteful, without being too strange. The float itself was great, very relaxing. Not life-altering, no massive realizations for me, I think I napped through part of it, but wow, was I relaxed at the end of it. Muscles felt great after soaking in the salts, also! I would definitely consider going back the next time we are in Portland. read more

I've had several floats at the Float Shoppe, and look forward to going there every time I visit Portland. Each has been a unique experience -- not especially spiritual, for me, but out - of - this - world relaxing and rejuvenating. I find it's a learned skill; something I get more out of every time as I know what works for me and what to expect. It's not a hot tub! so I've learned not to expect very warm water, but my-own-temperature water, which soon feels like an extension of me. It's salty (right) so I've learned not to touch my face once in the tank, or a quick trip out will be necessary to wipe the residue off. I've learned to save tea-drinking until after my floats. One time my neck was sore going in, and lying in the water was uncomfortable until I used the inflatable neck pillow for support -- and after the float, no more pain. The best Float Shoppe experience ever was the most recent -- I came out of the tank having left all tension behind, and floated downstairs in a fluffy robe right onto the massage table. It was my first massage with Winter, and she did a combination of Thai and other massage techniques... it was wonderful. Then a foot bath in the Zen room, where I collected my thoughts for the day ahead... and was so relaxed when I left I managed to lock my keys in the car for the first time in my life.
