If you're looking for somewhere to go for a quiet drink, this is the kind of place you'll be looking for. The drinks selection isn't great, but what they do have is often of high quality. The pub is split over several rooms of real character and can get a little busy at times. There's always a board full of specials as well. This is an absolutely classic Norfolk country pub. It has changed little over the decades I've…read moreknown it and most likely over a longer timespan than that. Characteristic of such pubs, it has no bar but instead drinks are served from a serving window with the beer poured directly from casks lined up in the serving room. The beers are local, Woodforde's but also new brewers too, and are all expertly taken care of and are the definition of perfection in cask conditioning and serving. The food is also excellent and features many local products and comes in ample servings. The pub still retains the flagstone floors, small rooms, and real open fires and absolutely no superfluous decoration or tarting up. This is everything you want in a country pub and a remarkable survivor.

(The Railway closed in the 1950s.). The pub has a bar area, with a separate snug with a pool table, and a dining room which leads onto a large conservatory, also used for dining. There is also a small beer garden at the side. There are lots of drawings featuring the Railway, and in the bar, at picture rail height, there is a little model railway that goes around the room. (It was not operating when we were there!) The menu features classic pub grub favourites, with a changing menu of daily specials. There's a full bar with a selection of real ales. We had burgers to start: a 6 ounce steak burger and a vegan burger, both served with chips and a decent salad garnish. To follow, we had the chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream, and sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. The burgers were good, and the puddings were excellent. Overall we had a nice meal which, with drinks and service, came to £60. The pub is thoroughly and happily unpretentious. Service was very friendly and extremely efficient. We would happily return.

They also have live bands performing there a few Saturday evenings a month. However, if you're not a fan of pool or darts, I'd avoid it on most week-nights, as there's always matches taking place, and it's very hard to get out of the way of them (especially with the pool matches, there are 2 tables in the main bar). They do have rooms to rent, but I've never used them, so can't really comment on them.

This pub is a joy to visit anytime of the year but does get busy in the summer as it is the only pub in the village. There used to be 3 at one time but they all closed down, only a lot of effort from the locals ensured that the Red Lion reopened and it has probably never been so popular. I found this pub by chance driving along the coast road some years ago and have been back many times since. It has that old world charm and has one of my favourite beers straight out of the barrel usually, Wherry as well as other local real ales on hand pump, (the way it should be) like Nelsons revenge. The food served here is all homemade and I have never had a bad meal, there is also a childrens menu so obviously famillies are welcome not like in the fake Irish bar O'Neills which are adults only, but they only tell you that after taking your money. In the main part of the pub there are not 1 but 3 real fires which are a real joy in the winter months. The pub has been extended and has additional space to the back, partly in their conservatory and partly in another extension. There is also seating outside. From the main bars there are lovely views across the stream and the fields beyond. They have this year added accomadation by way of a number of self catering chalets which all have the views you get from the pub. I have always had a warm welcome when visiting this pub and the locals are friendly as well. I can't rate this pub highly enough. Well worth stopping off if you are in the area or well worth a detour if you're not!!
