Henry Morrison Flagler Museum -- it's truly one of my favorite museums…read more The building itself is breathtaking. The atmosphere feels grand and almost surreal -- high ceilings, intricate hand-crafted details, beautiful paintings, and original interiors that have been preserved so carefully. Walking through the rooms feels like stepping back in time. The closets, bathrooms, and living spaces are all still there, untouched, which makes the experience even more special. One detail that really surprised me was the shoes -- they were incredibly tiny, almost like doll shoes. It's amazing to see how different things were back then. On my recent visit, I noticed they opened a new section on the second floor that I hadn't seen before. It's a mix of contemporary art and historical fashion elements -- including clothing details, vintage shoe boxes, and personal items from the original residents. I especially loved the miniature handbags and a wall art piece featuring delicate gloves -- so small, elegant, and made from very fine leather. There are so many unique details to take in. There's also a gift shop on the first floor with a great selection -- we even picked up a Monopoly game themed around the museum, which was such a fun find. They also have books, coloring items, posters, jewelry, accessories, and even small unique souvenirs -- something for everyone. Another highlight is the separate glass building . They recently opened a café there that serves breakfast on weekends. The view is stunning -- overlooking the water with the historic train nearby. The space is bright, clean and very peaceful. The only inconvenience I experienced was when my kids were younger -- strollers are not allowed inside, so keep that in mind if you're visiting with small children. Luckily, I had a baby sling with me, which helped a lot.

Learning about the history of the game and the grounds was good, and our charming docent was a wealth of knowledge which made it even better. - The staff and servers were all very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. - But... - The "high tea" designed to replicate a luncheon of the gilded age failed to live up to expectations. * I understand it's "tea" and not an AYCE buffet but when you pay almost $100 per person, you should reasonably assume you won't be leaving hungry. Au Contraire! * 2 finger sandwiches and mini tarts per person, plus 1/2 a deviled egg? My daughter's tea parties have more food than this... Plan on stopping for lunch after you eat here.

They had all the different masters and some very famous paintings and some other special ones that I hadn't seen. Everything from Degas to Renoir to Rodin and many more. They also had a really great PLEIN-AIR collection from artists I hadn't heard of which made it even better and more interesting. It's such a gorgeous technique and they created such beautiful work. You often only hear about all the great work from the European masters but there were also some talented Americans who could also master techniques like the Dutch master Vermeer and how he could perfectly capture light and shading. I loved the gorgeous painting by Everett Shin. Fantastic! John Slogan also created a painting that reminded me of the posters of Talouse Latrec. The global cultural pictures and artifacts were also pretty fantastic. The Japanese pieces made us think of the wonderful time we had in Japan and all the wonderful museums, temples and places we saw. I also loved the Chihuly Ceiling which was so beautiful. I loved all the beautiful colors. They even had some Andy Warhols which made us think of home and his terrific museum in Pittsburgh. They have a broad range of all different types of art. We'll definitely have to go back and explore further the next time we're in FL.

The museum is open every day but Sunday and is free. We came here, however, for a special exhibit so there was a charge of $12 per person. There are no discounts for admission (no veterans or senior citizen or other discounts). The exhibits here are self-guided. Although they do offer some guided tours for a fee. We entered the building by the steep steps fronting Dixie Highway. If you have any walking issues, I suggest using the side entrance that is designated for handicap visitors. It's much easier to use -- and there is an elevator to bring you to the floors you wish to visit. We didn't stop to see the old, restored courtroom on the third floor nor the holocaust exhibit on the first floor, but headed directly to the special exhibit we'd come to see. The "Wish You Were Here" exhibit (on the second floor) is about tourism in Palm Beach County. As a former member of the tourism/hospitality industry for over thirty years, this was of special interest to me. The exhibit started here in November 2024 and runs through June 2025. They had an audio tour -- you just scan the QR code with your phone -- and you can follow along as it explains the various exhibits. They start with the first visitors to the county in the late 1800's and take you through to the modern era. There's even a film by the local Visitors Bureau about the County and its growth. You get to see posters, paintings, artifacts, etc. from the early hotels to the current sports activities. After that special exhibit, we headed over across the hall (still on the second floor) to see some of the regular exhibits about the area. And then walked through the gift shop. We're glad we came. It was especially interesting to me because of my tourism background, but anyone residing in the County or new to the area might find it both educational and informative.

Just outside the entrance to the exhibition there was a white tent with signs requesting that you wait there until it is your turn to go in, but it was completely empty and we went in right away. I was really looking forward to this exhibition but ended up feeling a little bit disappointed about it. Besides the fact that (for some reasons) I thought it would be a more immersive experience, the vast majority of the panels reproducing each section of the Sistine Chapel were displayed on the walls and ceiling of a medium-size room; the remaining few were on the wall of an adjacent small room: both rooms seem just too overcrowded. There was no special lighting that would better bring up the beauty of the paintings and make you focus on the details: the ambience was too white and bright, not to talk about the huge crowd and the inside heat that was almost matching the outside temperature! Each paintings has its own brief description: probably the audio tour that is offered at the entrance explains more, but it's not included in the ticket... It was a very quick visit, and we were lucky that at one point the crowd left, so we could actually spend some time to admire the paintings, read their descriptions and "google" some more info. Although it could have been presented and/or explained in a better way, this exhibit is a brilliant idea to "move" around the world the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and I'm glad that West Palm Beach was chosen as one of the stops of the tour: unfortunately, there are not so many cultural events in West Palm Beach.

The docent explains the memorabilia displayed in this building, & details what you will see on the Palm Beach Maritime Museum #2 (consisting of a Boathouse & Barracks) & the JFK Bunker from the Bay of Pigs era ~ if you purchase the 3-part VIP Tour. Currently there is a Groupon available. Note that this attraction is Open Thursday - Sunday 11a-4p, & the last water taxi departs from Peanut Island Park @ 5pm. The water taxi begins running @ 10am so you can also enjoy the beautiful 80-acre Park, completed in 2005, which features:: Campsites, a Pier, a Manmade Reef, a Picnic & Swimming / Snorkeling Beach surrounded by a beautiful lagoon. Manatee sightings are quite common from November - March. The self-guided tour @ Museum #1 here takes about 30 minutes ~ a $2 Donation is suggested. I highly recommend that you make time for the 3-part experience, as it raised the very real question of the early 1960s during the Cuban Missile Crisis:: "What if . . . ?" The VIP tour was thought provoking, & I am most grateful that the impending disaster was averted. ***** The Palm Beach Maritime Museum #2 is housed in an old retired U.S. Coast Guard Station located on the Lake Worth Inlet on Peanut Island, which is accessed via the Manatee Queen water taxi from the Riviera Beach Marina ~ about a 10-minute ride.
