I thought it would be too expensive, boring, and not flexible enough for my student life. How wrong I was. I discovered Organic Wholefoods on Smith Street a couple of weeks before, and am now prepared to make weekly migrations to stock up on fruit and vegetables and a few other products as well. Organic Wholefoods boasts some beautiful regional produce (juicy oranges, enormous mushrooms and free range eggs) as well as an enormous range of cereals, flour, tea, nuts and more. I was particularly impressed with the wide range of tea and coffee, and had to get my hands on some of the Mount Zero Extra Virgin Olive Oil (under $20!). I was surprised to see that the produce was pretty reasonable (a couple of dollars here and there more than Coles of Safeway) but after buying and trying out the food I could definitely tell the difference. Although I may not have the budget to buy organic for everything, visiting and trying the produce stocked at Organic Wholefoods was an eye-opening and enjoyable decision.

Locally grown, seasonal produce, organic meals and fair trade teas are what Friends of the Earth are all about. This is a growing mentality that I support and feel like after visiting a place like this you understand why people are so passionate about it. There really is nothing better than the really fresh, organically grown foods they have on offer where it's guilt free and makes you feel fuzzy that you've helped the "little guys" and the environment. Well, whatever that line is Aunt Maggie's was partly responsible for me crossing over. Yup, I'm now a fully fledged kale-chip, coconut oil, kombucha loving woman. I visit regularly to see which healthy items are on sale and to buy well-priced vegetables between market shops. The store is huge and there is aisle after aisle of beautifully packaged "health" food that will make you feel virtuous as you throw them in to the wicker shopping basket provided at the front counter. My only gripe with this store is that not all items have prices on the shelves, making it very hard when you're trying to weigh up the value between three different kinds of activated almonds. It's easy to spend a lot of money here if you don't pay attention and compare brands but with some careful consideration you can actually get out of here having spent not much more than the local supermarket.

If I am in hurry and ran out of a product, then I will be forced to buy from them. Convenience can be pretty costly. They hold a sale for their members (21% off) every 2nd Tuesday of the month, so that's when the shop is very crowded. It seems that everyone just wait for the sale and stock up.

Stocking up on vitamins here can set you back no more than a few dollars. I can pick up my Iron supplements here for under $10 and my Multi-V for under $30 for three months worth! Vitamin Me also has a large range of protein bars for an after gym snack and powders for bulking up. Their price for a two litre tub is the same price as what i receive with my gym membership discount at my gym's store.
