Owned by the Golden Lion Pub group, this is also a Harvey's tied pub, serving the full range of Harvey's real ales.
Tucked away in the heart of Hove's Victorian terraces, the exterior is a classic of the neo-Tudor style. The interior is literally split in two, with separate entrances for the Lounge Bar and Public Bar. The Lounge is small, with dark-wood panelling, patterned carpet, polished dark wood tables, and a perfectly preserved 1930's arched brick fireplace. Decorated with 19th century prints of politicians, it look as if nothing has changed in 50 years - there's no piped music, even. It's firmly comfortable in a suburban sort of way, and safe enough to take you Mum to.
The Public Bar is the complete opposite, in furnishing and in clientele: it's effectively a sports bar, with Sky TV and a large pool table, and a lively local crowd of young lads. It gets very busy indeed during sports events. There's a small outdoor smoking area at the back, a seating area with wooden trestle tables at the front and a function room above (telephone for bookings and catering possibilities).
As well as the real ales - Harvey's Sussex Bitter, Old Ale and Porter and the occasional guest ale - there's a small wine list and the usual range of spirits and soft drinks. The food menu sticks firmly to hearty pub grub during the week and roasts on Sundays.
It's a good local, but a little off the beaten track for the casual visitor. read more
