    Just a corner bar
    Todd H.

If you're from one of the Eastern states, especially if you're from one of the larger cities, you know what a corner bar is and you probably also know what a Friday Fish Fry is as well. Western states generally have neither, most bars out here are usually a themed chain "brew pub" or part of a restaurant (or both). And Friday Fish Fries are pretty rare but fortunately they seem to be quite popular in the Phoenix region's far East Valley. I know, I've been on a mission to find them and compare them for the past 6 months or so. This week I discovered The Duchess, about as close as we get to a corner bar - a small simple place tucked away in the corner of a quiet strip mall with a plain solid wood door that just has the words "Duchess" on it. Inside there's a bar, several tables and on this Friday night a couple of dozen people just sitting around drinking beer and having fun spending the evening with each other. It's not a fancy place ... some Yelpers have called it a Hole in the Wall or a dive. That's not far off from the truth. Others have called it some less flattering things, perhaps they took a wrong turn on their way to one of those fancy Scottsdale themed "brew pubs" and ended up here by mistake. It's a bar - what bar has ever been described as "spotless"? I don't think of white table cloths and romantic candles when I think of the word bar. Anyway, we were there to eat not to drink all night. Their menu says they have a Friday Night Fish Fry special and my weekly quest has reinforced what every Easterner knows, that some of the best fish fries can be found in some of the most unpretentious corner bars. On a scale of 1 - 10 The Duchess doesn't ring the bell as a perfect 10 on every measure. They are way up there though for quantity of food for the price, for size of their fish filets, for knowing how to cook them properly, for a nice light but crunchy breading, for tasty French Fries, for friendly and welcoming service from the waitress and for laid back non-trendy atmosphere that is a nice mix of ordinary working people. Their tiny cup of coleslaw is only pretty good but I've had worse but frankly if that's the only negative thing I can say I think this place is a winner worth trying out. The price for a dinner with two large filets is about $10 and with four filets is about $12. Neither of us could eat more than two so being able to take the other two home for leftovers made it a good deal. It you aren't into showing off and being seen in a corner bar doesn't offend you I recommend The Duchess as a surprisingly good place to hang out and chow down on some good food.

The onion is still crunchy and they are never greasy. This time I shared the Steak & Cheese sandwich as well. Wow! That is huge and delicious! No way I could eat a full one on my own. First things first, it was hot in the restaurant, potentially the A/C was not working as well as it should have been or something, but it was not super comfortable. The service was good, I didn't get her name, a younger woman waited on me and she was very kind and did the best she could. The food came out super slow, I ordered empanadas to start, the waitress said they burned the first order (I appreciated that didn't just serve me overdone empanadas lol) once they finally arrived they were just unfortunately bland, and just kind of lacked authenticity. When she finally brought out my main dish, she even apologized for the wait and said "I had to go yell at them". For a main entree I ordered the French dip with onion rings, another reviewer mentioned they were the best they had had. The meat was kind of tough and dry (which is odd for a French Dip, and everything just lacked flavor. Even the au jus really had no kind of salt or much flavor to it. I really hoped after seeing how everyone else rated this place that I had found that little hole in the wall spot putting out killer food that we all long for, sadly this wasn't it.

We came in with our family and three kids and sat on the patio since we were a larger group. After eating, our kids were sitting in chairs near our table, chatting and moving around a bit. They weren't being loud or disruptive, but a nearby a couple clearly seemed upset. The woman was shaking her head and saying to the waitress "this isn't okay to be doing while people are eating", pointing toward our kids. Once I realized this, I immediately called my kids back over and had them sit with us, and I even let her know that if something was bothering her, she could've told us and I would have addressed it right away. The couple chose to ignore us and left shortly after. The manager then came out and reassured us that Lucky Lou's is a family-friendly restaurant and that our kids were absolutely fine. That meant a lot to us and really showed how supportive and understanding the staff is. I also hope one day that couple realizes how hard it is to keep a 4-, 6-, and 8-year-old sitting at a table for more than 30 minutes without shoving an iPad in front of them. On top of that, the service was excellent, the atmosphere was welcoming, and I honestly had the best burger and tater tots of my life. We'll definitely be back--thank you for creating such a kid-friendly and enjoyable place for families!

SENTRY - WATCHING RESTAURANTS…read more It was time for a re-review of Charleston's. Companion and I arrived at 5 and were seated immediately. We were going to try to eat the same menu as last time or as close to it as possible. We started off with the Dynamite Shrimp. As with the last time it was excellent. Also was the warm spinach and artichoke dip. It too was excellent though I am not understanding why they include sour cream and salsa with it as neither worked well with the flavor of the dip. We ordered non-alcoholic cocktails. Companion ordered a strawberry margarita which was quite good. I ordered the blackberry punch, which was a big mistake. The drink was cloyingly sweet and the flavor was overwhelming. After a few sips I could not drink anymore of it and had to send it back. As a non-alcoholic cocktail it was a disaster. Companion asked if they could make a cranberry margarita and the wish was fulfilled nicely. I finished companion's strawberry margarita which was decent. For main courses, companion had the baby backs which were ordered the last time. A tad overcooked but not bad. It was accompanied with excellent french fries and beans which were identical in taste to ranch beans that come in a can. The beans remained untouched after a taste of them. The fillet was not on the menu this year and instead was flat iron steak with peppercorn sauce. No baked potato anymore and no salad offered. While the steak was reasonably cooked, the smear of sauce over it had exactly by count 4 peppercorns in it. The accompaniment was garlic mashed potatoes, which were dense and without any charm at all. We had asked our waiter Matthew to make sure to include 2 batches of croissants in a bag to take home. Not only was no bread service offered to us, but the ones to take home were completely forgotten by our waiter. The burgundy mushrooms that we had last time are no longer a side dish but are an extra charge now, though the flavor is still top shelf. Desserts were the same as last time, and the quality and flavors did not change from the last time. Service was nice, but slow with the meal taking more than an hour and a half. Removing 1 star and almost removing 2 stars. This restaurant will be evaluated again in the future. 4 stars

The queso was rich without being too heavy, and the mustard added a nice contrast. For my meal, I had the Caesar salad topped with a bistro steak cooked a perfect medium rare. The romaine was crisp, the garlic-anchovy dressing bold, and the garlic croutons and parmesan tied everything together. The steak was tender, flavorful, and elevated the salad. At the table, we also ordered the cheesesteak with Angus beef, roasted peppers and onions, Havarti cheese, and garlic aioli served on a baguette, with sweet potato fries. The sandwich was hearty and satisfying, and the fries were really good The wagyu burger was another standout--topped bacon, Gruyère and smoky blue cheese, caramelized onions, tomato jam, and garlic aioli on a pub bun. The beef and bacon were fabulous and the fries cooked to perfection Jake, our server, was terrific--attentive, friendly, and helped make the whole experience even better.
