I guess I should have ordered only Irish fare. The mussels were not very good, as though someone poured half a white wine bottle into the broth. My cocktail, which sounded interesting on paper, was tiny and stiff. I ordered a Guinness to wash away the taste. We love the Druid as our local neighborhood Irish pub. It reminds us of the pubs we went to in Ireland. The food is delicious, especially the curry fries for snacking. Divey and dark. The ceiling decor is super cool. The fish and chips are yummy. The vibe is chill and laid back (I've worn sweats and a hoodie everytime I've come). One time in particular I came for dinner, someone at the bar was saving seats for friends who weren't there yet. If one is fortunate enough to meander into Druid, then one will also discover some of the best poutine in the city. Let's not rush by this appetizer: Most of the time, poutine is a soggy nightmare, more mush than anything else. In the words of my friend, this is absolutely a brilliant bar! The place isn't very big, but is very popular. My friends kept telling me to try this place, and I'm glad that I did! I walked in and greeted my friends who introduced me to the owner, Mikey. He was really nice and when it got really busy, he jumped in and helped out at the bar. It's great that the owner cares enough about the place to pitch in and help work it himself. This place may look fancy, but it's very casual and very warm and "homey" for lack of a better adjective. Being an Irish pub, the highlight is Guinness of course. Unfortunately, my body rejects Guinness like a bad organ transplant, so next time, I'll have the Magners Irish cider. Or maybe I can break my body in with copious amounts of Guinness. They have pretty much everything so if you like cheap beer like PBR or something, they have it too! You can't go wrong with the food here. If you don't believe me, have a seat at the bar. The smell coming from the kitchen is enough to make you want to order EVERYTHING. My friends all reccommended the Druid Burger. They told me that it would be the best burger that I've ever tasted. I was a bit skeptical, but ordered it anyway. I couldn't have been more wrong in my life. It was indeed the best burger I've ever tasted. I asked for it rare. The burger was juicy and flavorful, and the charred bits added a lot of flavor. The fries are hand cut rosemary fries that seemed mealy at first, but when dipped in the burger juices, it was delicious. They even have a wide array of sauces such as malt vinegar or something called "brown sauce" which is British. The fish and chips smelled very good, but I didn't want another entree, so I opted for the fried calamari. It was delicious! The breading was delicious, and the warm marinara sauce was very good. It even included fried rings of hot peppers like jalapenos if you want to add a kick. One of my friends got the fish (cod) sandwich and liked it. What everyone says is true: it's the best fish n' chips in town. Here's why: 1. Authenticity. Served in newspaper with fries and a lemon wedge. No frills. They'll even give you a cup of curry sauce, which is an absolute must when eating fries/chips in Ireland. 2. Perfect breading. All too often, restaurants ruin this simple dish by using a heavy breading. At The Druid, it's light and crispy, even after sitting under the newspaper. First bite to last bite, there's no mushy overly-thick breading to be found. 3. Portion. Bring your A-game and an empty stomach. This is a very large meal. It honestly may be close to a pound of fish. I also tried the fish chowder and it was excellent, to the point that I may forgo the fish n' chips in favor of the chowder on my next visit. Big pieces of cod and salmon, clams, and tender potatoes, all in a robust seafood broth that is somehow not overly fishy. read more

On the recommendation of Rebecca S, we ventured to The Druid on a cold, rainy evening to fill our bellies with Irish fare and some of that sudsy stuff. I was already familiar with their interesting beer menu but when it came to the food, I was a first-timer. And unlike most first-timers, I was not left disappointed or bewildered. The fish and chips, sans chips sub their much-talked-about mashed potatoes (for small additional fee) not only came in a portion size fit for a fattie, it was so surpisingly good from teh fresh, soft bread to the crisp and season-battered fish, to the perfect amount of tartar sauce) I finished the whole thing. And all of the potatoes. Go ahead, call me a fattie. The crowd slowed the service down a bit (I think our lovely waitress had to handle the entire place!), but we were more than understanding, as she was really down-t-earth and helped to broker the deal in getting the kitchen to sub out our 'chips' for a side of mashed. Cheeseburger it is. Irish bartender tells me to get it medium. Done. Irish bartender delivers burger. It's the size of my head, but I'm willing to take the risk and bite into it. I haven't had a burger in years. This seemed promising already. Irish bartender tells us to enjoy. I bite, I die. HOLY NUTS. Why haven't I been the The Druid before? Not only is it rapidly becoming my happy place because of all the Irish goodness (and the hot Irish bartender), but it was hands-down the best burger I have ever had. FINE. I don't eat burgers that often, but that's because I don't enjoy the texture or the flavor very much. But this... this was a flavor explosion in my mouth. I don't know what they season their meat with, but it's good. Matched with a beer, and you've got yourself quite the hefty meal. Unreal. It was burger heaven with a side of hot Irish bartender. There is a reason the Druid is constantly packed. Obviously they know how to pour a Guiness, but every time I go I'm surprised by how good the food is. I've been going more then 15 years! (Why haven't I reviewed before now?) The fish and chips are phenomenal, so good I order them too often. I should really branch out with their specials. Recently, I had a seafood chowder special that was so outstanding I find myself wishing it was on the menu every night. The service is top notch Irish Pub service -- always friendly and attentive, no matter how many folks are packed in. Finally, The Druid frequently has great Irish musicians playing in the big booth to the right of the door -- a detail that frankly makes the whole of Inman square feel like a neighborhood. read more

And this place satisfies every time. I think that's the principal reason why I've never had an unsuccessful date here. As soon as you walk in through the doors, The Druid puts you at ease. Maybe it's the mix of old-school Irish flair with the worldliness and artistry of Cambridge, but something about this bar is immediately agreeable. The beer list isn't too extensive, but it's solid. And for a Cambridge watering, the prices are surprisingly reasonable. (Nothing like the highway robbery happening over at Lord Hobo and Meadhall.) The only thing I avoid at The Druid is trivia night. I've been to many trivia events, and this one is a little too "geek-elite" for my taste. But otherwise, I'll always jump at the invitation to have a lager here. read more

How many times did I walk past the doors at the Druid, nose upturned, convinced it was another hokey Irish-style pub, despite all evidence to the contrary? I can't even begin to count. K is a regular at The Druid and after hearing accounts of his beer-soaked exploits there, I finally agreed - nay, suggested - an outing. It was a Monday night, the Pats were on the TV (minus one star for the flat screen, or any tv at all...no bar with a television, no matter how wonderful, will ever squeak by the 4 star mark), the crowd was relaxed, most tables occupied, and the smell of deep-fry oil, punctuated by the scent of fish filled the room. Save the tv, there was not a tacky flourish to be seen. For a small bar, there's a good selection of beers on tap, with a few interesting regional microbrews, the requisite Brooklyn (that night it was Lager, differentiated in flavor from its IPA by a measure fewer of hops), and the British blah blah beers, and an equally small but interesting selection of beers in the bottle. I'm not much of a pub food gal, though I'm told the fish & chips are wonderful. That's for the next visit. And bless you for leaving the hooded robes at home. read more

Hands down the best trivia night I've been to in Boston, complete with a Quizmaster who actually writes his own questions. And some brutally challenging questions they are. Everything from the format to the prizes (free shots for last place? Don't mind if I do!) to the contestants themselves is better than anywhere else I've been in this trivia-heavy town. The downside, of course, is that the place gets ridiculously crowded, and you generally have to show up an hour before the game starts if you want to have a remote chance of getting a table. Thankfully, they've become aware of this problem and started handing out clipboards. Bottom line is, once you've played trivia here, everywhere else will just seem lacking. I'm told they also serve food at this fine establishment, but I'm generally too wrapped up in the game to be hungry. I'll leave the food reviews to someone else. read more

Totally agree with Nick about the trivia here -- it is top notch. Wed. nights at 8pm, I believe. Much better than the organized Stump! trivia nights you find all over the place. This guy means business. I'd put him second only to the guy who used to run the Mon. night trivia at John Harvard's. But he left a while ago, so I guess The Druid is the champ. But the bonus here is that the food is much better than you'd expect for a tiny Irish pub -- even if this one feels more genuine than most others. The small menu has your usual pub fair as well as some more traditional irish treats, and it's all quite goos -- the burgers, fish and chips, are all done superbly. Went in here for the first time yesterday, after everyone I knew kept recommending it. I gotta say, I can see what all the fuss is about! Even though I only went in for brunch (the wait for S&S was too long!), I was pleasantly surprised by how awesome (and filling) their Irish breakfast was. It was cheap too, which is always a plus in my book. The waitress/bartender was really nice and brewed us a fresh pot of coffee. The atmosphere definitely felt relaxed, with a very authentic Irish feel (although I can only imagine what Ireland is like from living vicariously through all of my friends from there), perhaps minus the weird glowing fairy thing hanging from the ceiling. I can definitely see myself hanging out here for a shitload of pints really soon!!! ***EDIT: Have had dinner here a few times since initial review... also amazing! I friggin' LOVE this place. Barney B took me here for a bday date. It was one of the best presents ever! While it was a bit crowded when we got there- the bartenders jumped up when they saw us walk in and moved some people down so we could sit at the bar. Without having to ask- they brought him a Guinness and I ordered my Sam. (Sometimes- it's good to roll with Barney B). Having been to Ireland, this is the kind of place I was looking for over there that was very hard to come by. You would have only found this in a non-tourist ridden village. In the tourist areas you find Thai and Indian cuisine- don't ask me! So the atmosphere was great, the bar tenders attentive and all of them had charming brogues, and of course- I was in great company. But then-out came the grand masterpiece that will have the druid live on in my heart - and likely my hips-forever- the cheeseburger. Grilled to perfection with onions and cheese- the perfect bread to meat ratio- and hand cut fries on the side, greasy little morsels of potato that cut beautifully with the malt vinegar they provide (hold please, salivating on my keyboard). Not only is the druid a great pub- it is harboring the best cheeseburger I have had in the greater Boston area thus far. The rest of the menu looked awesome- but next time I have a cheeseburger craving it is to the Druid I go! It could be a long time before I try anything else. Ohh, the Druid. When I lived in East Cambridge, if I ever wanted a burger, this was THE place. I was undecided whether to give it 3 or 4 stars, but decided on 4 because the food is SO damn good. So yeah. The food. The fish and chips is probably the best I have ever had. They have malt vinegar on the table for the chips, which is neat. I've also had the burger and the sirloin, and both were to die for. Perfectly cooked, juicy and tender. Also, they give you soda bread while you wait, which is cool. The downside? Be prepared to wait. I've never waited less than an hour for my meal. The place is tiny and is usually packed, so it's understandable. Man, this place rocks! Came here on a Friday night and the place was definitely hoppin with a great vibe. We luckily scored a couple seats at the bar. The crowd is good mix of grad students and locals. Beer selection and prices were great. I remember reading about the fish-n-chips and they definitely lived up to its reputation here - HUGE portions! Nice laid-back atmosphere, very cool decor and friendly bartenders and staff who actually were all Irish - accent included all made up for a fantastic night out. Definitely a place to frequent often. Went to The Druid with friends last night (after a show at the Lily Pad next door) and can't believe I didn't yelp them sooner as my impression of them is consistent. I'm not much of a pub-goer but I love this little place because you can get much more than a pint there (I had Sauvignon Blanc and one of my friends had a yummy martini made with Absolut Citron) and the staff is always good-natured and polite. No attitudes and not a cranky face in the lot of 'em. Their menu is uncomplicated and well-priced and their food is delicious. if you're imagining it to comprise of the typical fried fare of the average bar/pub, you're wrong. Last night, I ordered their Irish seafood stew for $17 (can feed 2 with the bread basket) and it was fresh and delicious and chock full of mussels, clams, shrimp, and cod served with carrots, potatoes, and green beans. OMG sooooo good. The Druid isn't good for large groups but is a fun place for drinks with friends or a casual date. On a crowded night you'll definitely bump into others but it's a great way to exchange smiles and make new friends with folks that are generally down-to-earth and unpretentious. You can park around the corner in the city lot and can often find street parking. Go check it out, it's worth the trip. read more

I really love this bar. They serve a great pint of Guinness which gives it HUGE street cred as an Irish bar. When you sell as much of it as they do there is a good chance that the keg is freshly tapped. No old beer here that's for sure. Bartenders do a fantastic job getting you a refill quickly without giving you a lot of foam. WIN. Also the food here is really good too. Menu is small but everything on there is top notch. Calamari, stew, steak, burger. Take your pick and you won't be disappointed. Music is yet another bonus of the place. I've been there when they have a dj. We absolutely LOVE coming here. Their fish and chips is OUT OF THIS WORLD. One of my friends said that it was by far the best fish and chips they've ever had in their LIFE. Their shepherds pie is something you just don't expect - it's like a braised pot roast - giant chunks of melt in your mouth beef, roasted root vegetables, and topped with AMAZING mashed potatoes. Holy cow. Seriously. I ordered a burger the other day and requested a sub with those mashed potatoes and they gladly obliged... and they gave me enough to make a meal out of just the potatoes! How do they do it??? And on to the main pièce de résistance - their burger. Seriously, I have to vote this as the best burger in Boston. Perfectly seasoned ground beef, topped with mixed greens, grilled onion, tomato and mayo... GENIUS. We head here almost weekly. You just don't expect the high quality of food that you receive from the tiny closet sized kitchen, but we're never disappointed! And their beer selection is also top notch! read more

Hype. The Druid has it, and can absolutely and completely back it up. I'm used to paying the premium price for brews that pubs, taverns, and the like normally charge on the other side of the Charles. But the more-than-fair prices that Druid offers are extremely welcome. And hey, they've got Affligem on tap. Good looks, guys. The food is pretty freakin' superb too. Right now, they've got their signature Lamb Burger on special, and I really think they need to add this to the menu. Savory, spicy, and perfectly cooked -- I loved this from the first bite to the last. I also had a chance to try the Hearty Beef Stew (the beef melts in your mouth and cuts like butter), the Irish Sausage, Beans & Mash (drool) and the Shepherd's Pie. Everything was phenomenal...and don't even get me started on the brown bread...I think my Irish ancestry was even full after that meal. To top it off, the waitstaff, equipped with off-the-boat Irish accents and authenticity, were awesome. Polite, friendly, and accommodating, these guys really topped off my Druid experience perfectly. You have love a neighborhood style bar that allows you to not only bring your dog in to sit with you while you dine and drink, but also brings in the cutest babies ever. Granted I've only seen two here, but the baby sat at the bar with her parents like a champ and for some reason seeing her so happy while her parents could still come in for a drink just made me happy. This isn't the biggest bar in the world, so if you have a large group you probably won't want to come here, but this small bar has all kinds of irish food and a pretty awesome beer selection too. Matt J. loves coming here with his friends and we have even been here for pub trivia on Wednesdays (which btw will most likely start way late, and this trivia is pretty popular so get here early if you plan on getting a table!) The decor is probably my favorite part though. They have random fairy like creatures and such hanging from the ceiling and overall it just has a lot of character. Food wise I haven't eaten here other than a bite of my friend's porkchop which I think was slightly overcooked but it was GIGANTIC so you do get what you pay for I supposed in that respect. The Druid is the best Irish pub in the Boston area. The food is amazing (burger is in the top 3 I've ever had), diverse beer selection and the friendliest service in town! I've never had anything less than a great experience here. It tends to get crazy busy around 6pm everyday, and it can be hard to get a table, but it's worth the wait! Used to be killer - now its just ok. 2 or 3 years ago, the Druid was one of my favorite places. Great beer, friendly bartenders, and cool left of center house, drum+bass, and other eclectic fare. Never ate here, never cared to - but the Guiness was tasty and the company was choice. Then someone else bought it, fired all the great bartenders - kicked out the house DJs - and basically ran the place into the ground. I've really missed the east coast pub scene (there are some lame wannabe's out here in LA - 'cept for O'Brien's in Santa Monica - love u! :), so I made it a point to hit a real pub while visiting Boston - and I'm so glad we chose The Druid~~ It was freakin cold out, so we were happy to score a cozy lil' corner booth by the window... Even for a Sunday evening, there were a good number of people there and the atmosphere was fun and lively. As for service, our waitress was really friendly and pretty efficient considering she seemed to be working the whole place herself.... Food-wise, everything was deliciously deeeeeelicious. We started w/ the fried calamari appetizer and a fish chowder. Both were realllllly good....especially the fish chowder (we only ordered that cuz some random lady I ran into in the restroom was raving about it - so thank you, random lady). For my entree, I had the Irish sausage, mash and beans - what can I say, I am a sucker for processed meats in encasing. The dish was so stinkin good I wanted to cry. I think my bro-in-law either had the shepherd's pie or fish and chips (but I can't really remember b/c I was 2 beers in and very much engrossed in my own food). But whatever he had, he loved it. And the sister had....who knows...again, wasn't paying attention. So point is, go eat the calamari, fish chowder, and irish sausage entree. That's all I can remember, but all three were damn good. On one lovely afternoon, I trekked from Central Sq to Inman Sq to go have a certain woman's-private-issue test done at the Cambridge Hospital. Needless to say, I was dreading it. Ice cream would be great, but the sugar would only make me more hyper and tense. Then I found the perfect cure to ease my stress: BEER. Into the Druid I go. It was really great. Place was quiet, good music was playing, and there's only one other customer there. Service was great too. Not over the top, which I like, because I needed to be left alone as I filled myself up with their awesome black bean burger and thick cut fries. And two rounds of beer. While it's awfully small, we'll call it cozy, besides the pub ambiance and the willing eagerness of the staff to accommodate your party of any ridiculous size totally makes up for the fact that it can occasionally feel like a subway car in the middle of rush hour. The food, the booze, the trivia. The Druid can practically do no wrong in my book. They have the best Irish pub food I've eaten in Boston. I find their fries to be incredibly addictive, but I also like my fries to be slightly squishy. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu, it's all excellent. And even at the busiest times, I've never waited an excessive amount of time for my meal. Nice beer selection, and they also have Magnus Pear Cider!!! Oh my god. But ya know, trivia is a team effort so I don't really know how helpful that will be since you'd probably be gauging my skill level from the quality of my review. Whatevs. It's challenging. Trivia starts around 8:30. If you want a table/ be able to sit, it'd probably be best to arrive around 7-7:30. I think they said the largest pot they've had was $100, but it seems like they tend to hold steady around $70. Besides, think of all the intellectual glory and the potential bragging rights!!! The announcer is pretty chill. The only bummer I think is the length of time between questions which can kind of drag on. Honestly, the Druid is one of my favorite places in Boston though I don't know much about any other nights at the Druid. I pretty much come for the trivia.
