Great salon, with a cheerful and professional team…read more I hate having to choose a new salon, and since we have moved recently I found myself with the option of continuing to go to the "very ordinary but convenient" salon I had been going to in London, or taking a leap of faith and finding somewhere new. Cheekily, I got Esther to cut my two year old son's hair on my pre visit to get a hair colour patch test done, and was really happy with both his cut and the general friendly but relaxed feel of the salon. On returning today Fiona cut and coloured my hair. She was friendly, professional and extremely easy to talk to as well as being a great hairdresser. Finally I have found a salon that I actually want to return to (and uses colour products that have a solid ethical and environmental background).

I had the worst highlights of my life and my hair started falling out in clumps. The staff at…read moreClipso Salon (also in the Maltings and a much better option) agreed they were dreadful (patchy, not to the root) and couldn't believe how much they charged. It was £150 for a full head of highlights with NO blow-dry. I was informed that it would be an extra £25, which I thought was extortionate, so I gave it a miss. They were happy for me to leave with wet hair and streaky colour, which to be fair they probably couldn't see because they were too lazy to rough dry my hair for more than a few minutes. A salon that prides itself on excellence in hair wouldn't allow somebody to spend £150 and leave looking like they have just got stuck in a rain storm. In my humble opinion, £175 for unprofessional service (giggly girls), disorganised staff and a multi-colour effect (they charge an extra £20 for a toner they left on for all of 5 seconds) is an absolute joke. It not only shows how incompetent they are, but also how little they care about their customers and reputation. I provided them with some feedback back in August regarding my experience and requested some information on the colour(s) they applied to my hair during my two recent visits. I mentioned that the first time I had two different colours and it was absolutely fine, but on my second visit the lady used only one colour (even though I asked her to repeat the colour from the time before) and highlighted over my existing colour, which resulted in breakage and uneven shades of blonde. With hindsight, I would rather have dropped the £20 down a drain than given it to them for the most ridiculous and pointless 'add on' service I have ever fallen for. Perhaps a toner is necessary (although no other salons sting you for an extra £20 after already paying £130), but it certainly isn't going to fulfil its purpose being left on for a matter of seconds. My hairdresser was preoccupied having to check everyone else's client's hair, so I don't really blame her for rushing it through. I guess I just expected that when you pay for the most expensive stylist, you will have their undivided attention (at least for the majority of the time). All this salon cares about is generating as much money out of their customers as possible, so beware of extras, which aren't worth a single penny. As for the 'complimentary' treatment; I don't think the girl had a clue what to put in my hair (I heard amongst the screeching that they had 'run out' and what should she use instead? God only knows the answer). This was coupled by the fact that three female members of staff were too busy gossiping (loudly) and slagging off one of the other employees (for not cleaning the kitchen properly). This irritated the hell out of me (And I am sure the lady in the next basin having her hair washed wasn't overly amused either). This level of service doesn't exactly scream 'upmarket', 'professional' & 'most expensive salon in St Albans'. Over 6 weeks later, I am still no closer to finding out what shades of colour they used. This is the response I received today (9th of October); Dear Lisa Every colour that is used on a guest in my salon is noted. I also have cctv coverage to check anything I need to This colour is for professional use and only used in an Aveda Salon so any other salon would not benefit knowing this I will email you the ingredients shortly Regards Jo Banks I made it very clear that all I wanted was to find out what was applied to my hair so I could take the necessary steps to avoid further damage. I think this request is more than fair bearing in mind they were happy to take my money. At no point did I ask for compensation and I made it clear that I would refrain from writing a review if they would provide me with the information I needed so I can have my hair colour corrected; again, I believe I was being more than reasonable. Unfortunately, the salon are refusing to inform me of the shades of colour which were used. I don't know the legalities on this, but it would seem farcical if they were in their right to withhold this from the customer. I can only presume they either don't have it on record or are just being plain awkward. Either way, it is NOT good enough. Why Jo needed to inform me about her CCTV I have no idea! But it is good to know in case anyone is thinking about stealing their colour... actually, it's not like anyone would be that silly after reading this.
