This place was solid. Really good food, ambience and service, however I wasn't blown away. It was all incredibly delicious and satisfying but for the price I expected a little more. My favorite dishes were the filet mignon and the short rib cavatelli. They definitely have their meat figured out. I didn't love the mushroom flatbread. The flatbread in general was not high quality. The gnocchi was okay but again nothing crazy. THE DRINKS WERE SO GOOD. Overall I probably wouldn't go again but I did have a nice time and would recommend it to a friend if they were in the area (especially for drinks.) read more

Pretty room. The tables are comfortably spaced and the service is good. The menu is very interesting, with lots of good choices. Prices, however, are substantial for what is a high-end neighborhood restaurant. I told my wife that "it's a 4." My bill was 4 times what we'd usually pay for a casual dinner out. read more

My boyfriend took me here for Valentine's Day and I want to give this place more stars but the only thing was just the service- which I'll get into in a bit. We were greeted at the door by a friendly host, the entrance was packed with people, some patrons leaving while others were waiting to be seated as well. They seated us pretty quickly at our table out on the patio. The tables were all squished together and I think they did this to seat as many people as possible. Once we were seated, someone gave us water and we sat there unattended for 35 minutes and were going to leave after 45 min- we understood how busy it was since it was Vday and felt bad the waiting staff was overwhelmed. Finally, after 40 minutes of waiting, our waitress finally greeted us and apologized for the long wait, they were overbooked and understaffed. The only reason I'm giving this an average score was just the service, maybe try and not to overbook a place where people are waiting more than 20 minutes at their table! Now on to the food. They did offer a prefixed Valentine's day menu but we decided not to participate. We ordered a bunch of apps and just shared everything: 1. Brussels And Kale Salad (V, GF, D): refreshing and surprisingly filling 2. Miso Eggplant (V, GF): really sweet tasting and cooked well. 3. Bowl Of Mussels (D): obsessed with the flavor of the soup and the bread was amazing to dunk it in. 4. Hand Cut Steak Tartare For Two: one of my favorite dishes. First time at this location, many visits to the midtown location. The menu is revamped. No more three course lunch special. But we came for the happy hour, which did not disappoint. The oysters are salty, perfectly shucked, and meaty. The trio of tuna tacos was amazing--tiny bites of fresh tuna, some avocado and lemon. The mushroom pizza flatbread was really good, but too cheesy for my table (something I rarely say). It was hard to task the goat cheese below all of the mozzarella. Our favorite appetizer was the escargot. Perfectly chewy, with a basil olive oil and two very crunch pieces of bread. 4 apps and a cocktail, all from the happy hour menu came out to $68. Very good deal. The service was fine. They dropped all of the apps at the same time. For an upscale restaurant that was not busy it would have been nice if they timed the dishes. We sat outside under the covered patio and enjoyed the lovely NY breeze. The midtown location is a little fancier inside, but this location has outdoor seating if that's important to you. read more

Visited NYC during the holidays and actually ate here for 2 dinners during my trip. We had Christmas dinner at the Consulate and another time at the beginning of the new year, both seated in their covered outdoor patio section of the restaurant. Service was amazing both times and the food was delicious! Great cocktails and a variety of options. On Christmas I had the filet mignon ($51) and it was delicious. Very tender and big piece of steak. Others in my party had the chicken, grilled artichoke, bowl of mussels, and cheeseburger. They made this dinner exceptionally special and I will definitely remember eating here on Christmas. Make sure to try their desserts as well like the pineapple upside down cake....super good! The second time we ate here I had the Korean style steak, which had a sort of soy sauce dipping sauce to give the steak a little kick. This was a delicious meal. Another person in my party had the Short Rib Cavatelli and this was a huge delicious heavy portion of pasta he could not finish, but it was very good. Would definitely recommend eating here for anyone who wants a nice dinner with terrific service. The inside of the restaurant was also decorated very nice for the holidays....they had a cool old looking bar here as well. Visited The Consulate to celebrate a friends birthday. As soon as we walked in we were impressed by the decor and ambiance. It's a great place for a romantic or celebratory dinner. I ordered the Jardín cocktail and really enjoyed the spicy and sweetness of it. Our table ordered some items of the specials menu including a steak with chimichurri, seared duck breast, veggie burger, and lava cake dessert. All of it was very tasty but the steaks were a little light on sides, just came with broccoli rabe. Definitely recommend ordering a side of fries they were a hit with our table! read more

I had walked past here a bunch of times and noticed the great outdoor set-up, as well as taken a peek inside and admired the decor. Finally came by to try brunch and it was just all right. I think I've well and given up on brunch as a concept. Really liked the cocktails. Thought the drinks menu was pretty inventive (though not cheap for $17 for a few sips of alcohol). Maybe next time I'd eat somewhere else and come here for a nightcap. 1) Consulate omelet: Fluffy eggs, generous chunks of cheese and caramelized onion. Potatoes on the side could have used more crispiness/seasoning and the side salad was really under-dressed. 2) Hangover burger: Patty was a little small. We had a mix-up with a gluten-free dish where at first we weren't sure if the fries had any sort of breading on them and then our friend found a hair on the dish. Manager came by and quickly sorted out the issue, no questions asked. 3) Shrimp and grits: Hmm. The tomato sauce had good flavoring but the grits were really dry and mushy. More like polenta. We sat outside, which was heated and very nicely put together and decorated, and started with some cocktails. From there, we moved on to steak tartare for our starter. The raw steak formed into a perfect little circle topped with a raw quail egg and paired with freshly toasted bread was out of this world. That runny yolk ties the meat and bread together into the perfect bite. I could've, unapologetically, eaten one serving all to myself. For my main course, I got the short rib cavatelli. The pasta came topped with a healthy dollop of goat cheese and the pasta itself was jam packed full of short rib and a hearty sauce. This was no small portion either, could've been shared (but I didn't). A delicious dish and one that I'd recommend to anyone. Service was great, the restaurant was impeccably clean and reservations would be a good idea, as it is a fairly popular spot. read more

Gorgeous spot on the UWS for a date. The vibes are sensual and elegant. Food is fresh and of great quality. We ordered the following: 1) The charred Octopus-- extremely tender. The flavour profile is scrumptious! It was sweet and tart but nothing overpowered the octopus. 2) The mussels-- the mussels were juicy and had an amazing texture. Loved the bread they pair with it and you can dip into the broth. 3) Clam linguine-- this had a very strong garlic flavour, which I loved. But you're not a fan of garlic, skip this one. We also ordered a side of fries and a side of broccolini. Both were pretty good, but I would focus on the entrees and appetisers instead. Love going to this spot and always will go back. read more

Had such a lovely time with my girlfriends here. The inside is dimly lit but very chic decor - perfect for a date night. They also had a jazz band playing on a Monday night which I thought was fun. I opted in for the restaurant week menu. For my starter I got the escargot, they were very buttery and garlicky which I like. for my main I ordered the steak frites, and it was cooked very well. I really enjoyed the perform sauce. It also came with a dessert, I chose the apple tart and it was just like an apple pie. Overall very happy with the food. They also had really delicious cocktails and decent wine selections. Our server was also really attentive and kind (and goofy and made us laugh which we appreciated). Came upon this restaurant on a beautiful sunny day after a run in CP and just wish the service and food could've been better. We were seated inside the outside establishment that was constructed and it felt like we were just forgotten by our waiter for most of our stay here. We tried the burger (which had weird tough parts inside the meat that crunched hard on my tooth (?))and was definitely way undercooked. Furthermore it looked like they just gave us few fries and the rest was just the bottom of the batch with a lot of crumbs. Only shining star was the croque monsieur, which was ham and cheese toast, but still super pricy for what we got ($20). We came at almost 2pm, and we were restricted to only the limited brunch menu, which was disappointing since we wanted to try the flatbread. There aren't too many upscale French restaurants on the Upper West Side, so I appreciate the modern French and American cuisine at the Consulate, which opened in 2019. The restaurant does change its menu frequently and offers daily specials with dishes from around the world. The Consulate's decor includes a dining room decorated with wooden tables, leather chairs, photographs, large mirrors, and antique clocks on the wall. I consider it a comfortable space, perfect for a breakfast/brunch with friends. I ordered the Consulate Breakfast, which costs $25. This dish has elements from both Spanish and French cuisine. The smell of sizzling crackling bacon and freshly poached eggs feels therapeutic to me. This breakfast offers two different types of meat, thick sliced bacon and pork sausage. Additionally, it has two eggs prepared any style with potatoes and a salad. This order makes for a deliciously filling breakfast. I loved the runny yolks of my poached eggs with the sweetness of the bacon/sausage and the softness of the potatoes. The salad was a refreshing touch to an otherwise heavy meal. First time at the consulate and I'm so satisfied with my entire experience! 10/10 for service- came for brunch and it was busy but great Sunday vibes. The server was always making sure we were taken care of! 10/10 for the food. Ordered the cast iron pancake (similar consistency to almost a Japanese pancake and crispy on the bottom!h), steak and eggs, Cesar salad (to die for) and the consulate breakfast and all were outstanding. This is such a gorgeous restaurant with amazing service. We dined to celebrate a special occasion and we were taken care of very well. I have a huge sweet tooth and the cream brûlée is one of the best I've had in the city. It's really fun to share multiple items on the table, because it's hard to decide on one main entree each. I would recommend the steak tartare (for two) to start and a ribeye (for two) for a main meal with a French onion soup. Will be back, soon! read more

TERRIBLE SERVICE! I've been here for late night drinks before and didn't have a problem, but my roommate and I got here for brunch one Sunday and asked for a table outside since the weather was nice (a little windy but the sun was out). We were pointed to a table and as we walked to the table, the wind blows a napkin off one of the tables and the wait staff points to the napkin telling my roommate to pick it up. It wasn't even our table! Then we sat and waited at least 20-25 mins without any service. Nobody came by with water or to take our order and the restaurant was pretty empty. We eventually just got up and walked across the street to Good Enough To Eat where they had amazing service. read more

Ambience was 5 star. Really nice. Felt warm and inviting and a good number of people there to create a scene. Food on the other hand felt overpriced for the dining experience. It didn't feel like enough of a memorable experience to justify those prices. Shrimp Toast was the best thing we ordered. Really thought it had a lot of flavor and was delicious. Again, a small portion for the price. The French Onion Soup tasted no better or worse than average French Onion Soup-- but it cost $20! The Gnocchi relied on butter and cream for flavor. It was good but wasn't an interesting dish and lacked a wow factor. The beer is $10 and Wine averages $17 a glass. We spent over $150 with tip (2 apps, 1 entree, 3 beers), left a bit hungry, and overall felt the experience left some to be desired for the price. That said location is great, and rent is high in that area-- they got to cover the costs somehow. I personally just don't have enough disposable income on a weeknight to cover a $150 dinner that isn't going to wow me. A lot of people seem to give this restaurant 5 stars so maybe I just have different taste. read more

Let me just start by saying that the Consulate saved us numerous times earlier on in the pandemic when we got sick of our usual Seamless places and wanted something a little nicer than fast casual. While I am grateful for the purpose it served, I can't say the food is outstanding. It is extremely inconsistent, which makes it hard to rate. At times during the meal I thought about two stars, at times I thought about four, but three feels appropriate. The space itself is lovely, the staff is kind and helpful, but the product for the price is not where it should be. As a long-time foodie and Upper West Sider, I often talk about restaurants that are "good for the UWS" or good even taking the rest of the city into consideration. The Consulate is the former. Our experience finally dining inside here was pleasant, but that was more about the company than the food. Came here at 7:15 on a Monday night as a party of four. We made a reservation, but I wouldn't say it's necessary for a weeknight -- only if you're on the conservative side. Because of the restaurant's branding, I didn't expect to interior to feel so old-timey -- more in a quaint way as opposed to a cringey way, but it was still surprising. Drinks were a hit here. There's a solid list of cocktails and wines by the glass (mostly French). My sister had the Three Shades Of Green (cucumber, basil, gin, Chartreuse, lemon juice) which is basically a cucumber-basil gimlet, while my fiancé had the Touch of Ginger (mango purée, ginger purée, bourbon, ginger liquor, lemon juice). Both bright and delicious. I ordered an extra dirty martini which arrived quite literally filled to the brim -- definitely got my money's worth there (which is good because $18 is pricey for a cocktail). When I say extra dirty I do not mean moderately dirty and they definitely understood the assignment. Food-wise, the menu is French-leaning but somewhat eclectic. Shaved Brussels sprouts, Tuscan Kale, green Apple, Pecorino cheese, Red Wine dressing: B So-so. This was a go-to when we ordered from here on Seamless, but in person it was a bit blander than I remember. The ingredients were all yummy and fresh but perhaps underseasoned/dressed. Grilled Octopus, roasted pepper agro dulce, crispy potatoes, black garlic puree, roasted piquillo pepper: D/B Okay, I'll explain. The octopus itself was executed fairly well. The potatoes were thin and tiny and crispy and I wish there were more of them on the plate. But there was something in this dish that tasted completed rancid. I can't compare it to anything I've ever ingested in my life, but whatever it was (I thought it was potentially the tomatoes/peppers or one of the herbs used) kept me from enjoying this dish. Crispy Maitake Mushrooms, Harissa Aioli: A- Another go-to order, and for good reason. Maitake mushrooms are debatably my favorite species of mushroom. Woody and complex. These were juicy, crispy and paired nicely with some yummy aioli. Seared Brussels Sprouts With Bacon And Red Wine Vinegar: B+ A little greasy for my taste but still enjoyable. A simple preparation with ingredients that are tried and true. Also will note that I tried a piece of my fiancé's steak, which was quite dry. He thought so too. It was the nightly steak special (they offer a bunch of different steak cuts here) and it looked great on the menu but the execution left much to be desired. read more

After eating the pasta with mushrooms, I decided on the five star rating regardless of anything else. All I can say is wow! And I don't even like mushrooms! This food is solid. I also had the onion soup, burata with tomatoes and strawberries, and French fries, all of which were delicious. French fries were somehow perfect even though I got delivery. The only dish I would not get again is the sirloin steak with potatoes and broccolini. Something was a bit off with the texture of the steak, and the sides suffered from delivery. Maybe the dish is better if you dine in the restaurant. I will definitely order again - especially the pasta - which I dream about! read more

I went to read reviews from others on Yelp, having just dined here with a friend, who's like a daughter to me. We were planning to eat great food & talk about an idea on new business plan, in an intimate ambience. The idea of actually talking went out the window. I'm prejudice as I think it should be served with melted butter & garlic. She had the kale-broccolini salad (she vegetarian) & barely ate it. Also bland & very chewy.
