The atmosphere of the conservatory is great. Right next to the water and the staff is friendly and attentive. The calamari was good and the drinks were even better. The pizza was a bit underdone, but had they cooked it to a crispy bottom with undercarriage it would've been quite good because the flavors were there, especially the cheese. Nice elegant setting wharf, and serviced by friendly staff. $35NZ Half Dozen Bluff Oysters...these oysters are a seasonal exotic New Zealand specialty. They were good, but not amazing. We prefer regular oysters. $21.50NZ Green Lip Mussels...amazing! Best mussels we had on our 2 week NZ vacay. The creamy coconut broth was amazing for both the mussels and bread. $12NZ Bread & Dips...the dips were alright, but the bread is amazing and we wanted more of it for dipping into the sensational Green Lip mussel broth. This was our one dinner in Auckland, so I can't tell if it was relatively expensive or not, but it did have the most expensive menu of our 2 week New Zealand vacation. I love this place, it is by far my favourite in Wynyard Quarter. The food is fantastic and on many occasion the staff have been more than accommodating with regards to making me vegan pizzas (which are fantastic!) Whenever I have come with friends or family they have all enjoyed their food, the menu goes from small plates to platters and pizzas so perfect for sharing. In particular I like how the sharing platters are from 'the garden, the sea, or the land'. all the ingredients are fresh and high quality, never disappointed. The living walls are pretty cool and so are the buffalo hide skins and low sitting leather couches which are ultra comfortable. On a sunny day you can sit outside and soak up the sun and look out at the water. The Conservatory is a really cool place to come whether it is with a group or just one other. Be warned though, lots of people are aware of how cool this place is and how great the food and service is too and the 9 to 5 suits come down to wind down after work so thereafter the place can get pretty hectic and sometimes pretty loud. I've been to The Conservatory for a few after work drinks and leaving lunches. Every single time I've been we've always had such a ball. It's the perfect setting and you can sit looking right out over the water. We've been there for lunch, dinner, and just drinks. My favourite drink is their Espresso Martinis - they are seriously good! They do amazing platters and pizzas but I can't go past their seafood salad. It is so fresh, tasty and damn good New Zealand food. What really makes The Conservatory stand out from the rest of Wynyard Quarter is it's unique décor. There are hanging egg seats, plants everywhere and it's pretty much completely open (bar a few glass walls) so you can take in all the goodness of the sea. read more

The Conservatory is a nice spot for a quiet drink. I've never been there to eat, although friends of mine have had the tapas and they looked good and got the thumbs up. The drinks are good and prices average for the waterfront. It is probably a bit classier than some of the other bars near by as well, Jack Tar for example. I have seen The Conservatory busy on a sunny afternoon but it's got more of the atmosphere of a restaurant than a bar; people keep to their own groups and it's not really conducive for social interaction. Was walking along the water in Wynyard Quarter when the smells from here enticed me. I walked in, somewhat confused about how one goes about getting a table, and stated as such. "Well, I would select that one there, grab it about the width, lift with your legs..." was the jovial response from the bartender, flashing a smile. He pointed me to the host and was able to select a table outside with suspended wicker basket chairs. I like suspended things. I perused the menu and ordered a chicken burger with avocado and bacon. I asked for a side of kumara chips (fries), and am not too sure I received them, but I was new to this kumara thing. For my American readers, "kumara" is similar to a sweet potato, and "chips" are fries (like in any good, former British empire). Tasty tasty tasty! As usual, I was sad that it was all gone, and I even gave the kumara chips a go, but nonetheless, it was a good meal. read more

I've been here a few times over the years. I've had a pizza here a couple of times, but more recently I stopped in for a quick drink. It's okay. They have an okay wine list, with some real standouts available, but just generally pretty okay. Service is meh. I went in around 1.30pm, it wasn't busy. We were greeted right away, but it took a while for menus to come out, waiters to come back to take the order.. Bless the waitress' little cotton socks, she obviously hadn't worked in hospo for long because she wasn't sure on the wine, wanted us to point it out on the menu. I find that more cute than annoying, but probably as a heads up to owners/managers, your staff should be well trained in your wine list. There are people far fussier than me in this world. And the wine was probably poured from a great height, so mine was frothing when it came over. No big deal, just a bit odd. So, it's okay. I would recommend sitting in a comfy seat away from the wind, it does tend to get quite nippy out in front of the water there. You might get less of a view (depending how many people are there) but that's okay by me. I'd rather not freeze! I am a wimp. read more

the conservatory was a pleasant surprise yesterday. the pizzas were great and huge in size. feeds around 3 people per pizza. i didn't really like the tequila chicken, it was just chicken pieces kind of drowned in some salsa and sour cream and they serve it with tortilla wraps. the calamari was fresh and great! the rosemary fries and the parmesan truffle fries were fantastic, and the drinks they served (we ordered the sodas they make specially) were refreshing and great! views are beautiful if you sit on a couch outside! the beetroot sharing salad plate would be better if they mixed the salad with the beetroot but all in all beautiful food! read more

The Conservatory for me is a perfect example of a location and fit-out that perfectly matches the menu. Situated on Wynyard Quarter's North Wharf, the Conservatory offers terrific waterfront views and ample people-watching opportunities with the outdoor tables right on the promenade. The fit-out is special, with plenty of indoor-outdoor flow, planted green walls inside, potplants, and hanging egg seats and couches outside. Ridiculously chilled out. The food is perhaps a tad pricey but that comes with the territory - pizzas are generously sized here, and the seafood is nice and fresh. Great place for a sunny late lunch! read more

I had a table booked for over 15 people on the 14th Oct, Saturday for dinner around 7:30 pm. The attender showed our reserved table and then we all were seated. The odd part was that all the waiters/waitress were wearing these headphones and nobody bothered to approach our table for service! I, and my guests had to go and ask for service at all times! That was ridiculous! I was expecting to get a high quality service in a good high-end restaurant. But that wasn't the case. It was a sheer disappointment. How hard is it for one waiter to come to our table, take the order, confirm the order and delivering it a little quicker? And, for the same waiter to come and check to make sure the service was given properly? Isn't that how a customer gets served? It is not rocket science! The drinks took ages to arrive. The drinks were all brought separately and all not at once! The starters came after the mains and platters! I was perplexed that a restaurant with a 4.0 rating was not organized at all! Customer Service was ZERO! Delivering of order was ZERO! Lamb Meatballs were extremely SALTY! Stuffed Mushrooms lacked SALT?!?! It tasted bland! Cajun Chicken Skewers, Glazed Baby Beetroot, Rosemary Fries, Kumara Fries, Duck Fat Potatoes, Ocean Catch, and Southern Flame were scrumptious and edible. If I come back again, I would definitely order these. Appreciate the seating arrangement and the view. It was very pleasant. Team, I am not trying to be this bad/rude customer but when you don't get what you expect from a high-end restaurant we all will eventually vent! read more

We drove from Howick to come for a family dinner here due to a previous experience that left us all wowed. Unfortunately this second round was nowhere near as good. The atmosphere is fun - very loungey. Couches, pillows, blankets - super cozy. We sat on the patio and got to watch the ships coming in and out, and all the tourists and locals cruising the viaduct. Atmosphere wise - huge win. Our server was *awful*. Oh man - it was so bad and one of those moments where I was so grateful that tipping is not customary in New Zealand. We sat down and within two minutes he asked us for our orders. We explained we were waiting for more people, and he just walked away. Within two minutes of the rest of our guests sitting down he walked back up again and asked "Are you ready to order now?" I just started laughing. No, bro - they literally just sat down. Just chill. When he came back, my brother-in-law asked for some information on Negra Modelo. The guy had no idea what it was, what kind of beer, what sort of flavour, whether it was dark or light. He said he thought it was a dark beer like a guinness, and seemed annoyed that we wanted information. The key to being a good server is knowing your product, buddy. The pizzas are huge - 18", but neapolitan style thin crust so you will find that you eat more than expected. They are pricy though - at about $35 on average per pizza. We had the margherita, the santa fe chicken and the meat lovers. Out of all of them the margherita was our favourite - the others had way too heavy of sauces for such a thin crust. They were still good, but definitely not the delicious simple recipes we remembered. My favourite part though is when our server brought our pizzas, he dropped them off and when he got to the last one, looked at our table and said "Huh. Looks like you have no room left" and awkwardly dropped it on the corner of our table before he walked away and left us to sort it all out ourselves. All in all, not the same laid back but attentive experience we remembered. It was good, but not worth the price point for such underwhelming pizza and poor service. read more

I came here with a group of friends to watch a rugby game. We had a great time - a chilled out, fun set up with friendly and attentive staff. We dined on delicious platters to share and had tasty cocktails in mini watering cans.. Always the kid at heart, I also enjoyed the hanging seats in their outdoor area and I thought the greenery was a nice touch. I'm sure I remember reading on their chalkboard outside that Richard Branson had stopped there for a drink when he was in town, so you can ask the staff about this. Had the mussels, which were amazing, and the tuna, which was good. Also shared a margherita pizza with prosciutto - it's big enough to share, be warned. Also really good! We ordered two burgers and a pizza for lunch last week. I don't know what we got but it wasn't any sort of meat I've ever seen in a burger. It was super hard and super dry. It's as if they took the old, crusty dried out bits of raw meat from the edge of the mixing bowl, packed them into a couple of patties, then stuck them in the oven at 125 C for a couple of hours to get them completely dried out and lumpy and super dense. Pretty much the worst burger I've ever been served. The pizza was bad too. The dough was not cooked through. The food was the worst food we experienced in Auckland. Maybe they just had an off day but at this price point it's insulting. I don't normally bother with negative reviews but at this price point ($43 for a lousy pizza?), and the management's penchant for sticking it to tourists, I figured I owe it to the next potential customer. There are several restaurants near to this one; I'd definitely try one of them. We did, at a later date, and were satisfied. The one star is because the coffee was fine and the fries were good. And the server was very professional. She should work at a better restaurant. read more

Food was so bad that the head chef came to our table to apologize when he saw what we had abandoned on our plates. Although chef was honest enough to apologize outright for food that "wasn't up to snuff" and said he was "sorry you had to experience that", the restaurant manager still charged our party of 7 the entire $168. Was looking forward to dinner here but was really disappointed. All the waiting staff seemed to be backpackers where English was defiantly a second language. We had to ask 3 times for our drinks - which were nice when they eventually arrived. Food was ok - pizza bread was doughy and needed to be cooked longer, chicken wings were very messy and needed a dipping bowl or more napkins. Fries and calamari were a highlight. Asked for side plates which never arrived. Matre d did her best but was let down by the rest of the staff. Hopefully it was just the wrong night to come here but won't be back in a hurry. read more

A few months back a group of us, six, came here for an evening meal to catch up and explore Auckland's waterfront (4 were out of towners) on a Sat night. The place was crowded wth mostly young people in there 20's and 30's hanging out for drinks and a light dinner. We all enjoyed the food, ample portions but a hefty bill by the end. Service was more akin to 3 stars but nothing out right bad about it. Just had a not great coffee and even worse dessert at The Conservatory. With only 2 desserts on their menu you would think they would be great. Neither lived up to their menu description. "Classic Apple Pie" was luke warm apple flavored dough, "Not to dissapoint Tiramasu" was basically chocolate mousse and thickened cream with 2 dry lady finger sponge biscuits shoved in for good measure. No coffee or rum flavors to be seen. And apparently the chef is Italian. Perhaps they ran him out of Italy.... read more
