It started off fine walked up to the comedy club so excited to be there and they immediately asked Friday's fine it was to be expected. After asking Friday as a security guard went up to the person who was selling the tickets and had some sort of squabble with them for a while... We were like OK that's fine we really wanted to see the show so we won't make a big deal about it even though we were waiting outside in the cold for like 10/30 minutes max! Anyways after we were waiting room like OK how much are the tickets they said $25 no problem we pay the tickets walked in got our seats whatever after a few minutes of being there the waitress informed us that there was a two drink minimum purchase. We looked at the menu and saw that there was no drinks less than $15 and so we went up to the front desk and we're like hey we were not told about this two drink minimum policy can we have a refund and will just go to which the managers responded with an arrogant tone no you guys are ignorant we told you etc. and then we informed the security no you didn't tell us because you were having a beef with the guy that was checking us out with the tickets. I visited The La Jolla Comedy Store for comedian Clayton English (who is fantastic btw). Our tickets were for the late show at 9:45pm. We arrived a little too early, but the kind door man let us know the line starts around 9:20pm and showed us where that would be. We walked around and came back at that time to line up. It was really easy, coordinated and the door man guided folks as needed. Shortly after we lined up, we were taken in to check IDs and tickets, then seated at our table of choice. We sat right up front (many are too nervous to be that close). My feet were literally at the base of the stage. If only I could be this close for every event that I attend! Immediately, our server took our drink orders, and checked back to get our 2nd drink when the 1st were nearly gone. The openers went on, each doing between 5-8 minutes, and then immediately after the headliner is on. I love the efficiency of a comedy show, and The LJ Comedy Store is no exception. From the easy line to quick seating, prompt drinks and on time comedians back to back, it is a great 90 minutes of laughs with no wasted time, down time or unnecessary fluff. I was pleased with a decent drink menu inclusive of beer, wine, cocktails, martinis and non-alcoholic options. The venue is a classic, and that said, there is nothing fancy inside. But it is intimate, there isn't a bad spot in the house, and you can see big names in this famous venue. read more

If I could give this place a negative 5 stars I would. It started off ok not the best. Then a guy comes up starts talking about make a wish and how he wished he could be sick Like those kids and get to go to all those fun places they get to go. I was sick toy stomach when he said that since my own daughter was part of the wish program as she was a sick child. The entire audience was silent with disbelief. I got up to speak to the manager little good that did so we for up and left the comedy store. On the way out I saw they comedian and walked up to him to say how incentive he was in saying what he did and his response was appauling as he said well to bad and his other comedian friends stood there and said its the 5th amendment freedom of speech. All I know is they lost my business. I will NEVER ever be back again to this dump. They had no food t to order the seats were taped up, gum under the chair, the drinks were nasty tasting and of poor quality. They also charged for a stale bag of popcorn a total with tickets $65.00. NOT WORTH IT! I was genuinely excited to get out and laugh but, when you make fun of terminally sick kids that's where I draw the line. read more

5 star review to the comedians who performed the other night. We saw Dat Phan and his tour comedy mates give an awesome two hour show. It was well worth the ticket price. I've lived in SD for some time now but have never been to The Comedy Store. I remember this place being THE place b/c Pauly Shore's mom owned it. At least that's what we thought when we were younger and under 21 (and Pauly Shore was super cool & popular). I believe his mom still owns this place. There's no parking so you have to find street spots. Do NOT park at the Vons lot behind this place as you will be towed (according to everyone. There IS a two drink min and you MUST be 21+ to get in. There is indeed a bouncer who checks your ID at entry and the guy, that night, was a bit terse. He dryly asked for ID then he even dryer-ly (I think I just made up a word) listed the rules for the house (2 drink min, no cell phone, no HECKLING or you will be booted). I kinda chuckled about the heckling comment but then I STFU when I realized he might boot me right then and there for chuckling. No matter. I'm sure he was doing his job so it's fine. There is NO food other than popcorn for $4/bag. The nice man making and selling the popcorn was super nice and charming. He and bouncer should have a drink together after the show. Speaking of drinks, they do have a nice variety of beers, cocktails, wine, and boozey coffee you can choose from. The waitress will come to your table/seat and take your 2 drink min. They DO require your ID or a credit card to hold during the show in order for you to get your drinks. I found the drinks to be expensive. My $9 glass of red tasted fine but I think you can buy that bottle of wine for less than the $9 I paid for the glass (of wine that night). But my $12 mule, served in an awesome copper mule cup, was amazing. One friend didn't drink alcohol but he was still required to order two non-alcoholic drinks (they have soft drinks I think). Our server was efficient and alright. I do wish they had available water for self service as it was warm inside the venue and it was difficult asking for refills on water. So keep in mind that even if your ticket price was $15, you're still going to spend around $20 for drinks inside The layout of the space is cozy and I liked it. There's a small table with four chairs around it. They faced all the chairs to the front where the stage is. My only complaint was that our table & seats were kinda in the main pathway to the bathroom and bar (where waitresses would walk to constantly to get the drinks). So we often had to pull back our legs or feet so others wouldn't trip. I'd come back again if the write show was on. We were guests on Sunday (April 14, 2024) and were told we could not enter the comedy club with a backpack. This would have been fine, if we had known of this policy beforehand. We were told upon our arrival that backpacks were not allowed AND that the information was posted on the website (by the security at the front). This was news to us since we searched the website for this information several weeks before we arrived. I have searched the website today, and cannot find the information at all. This "no backpack or luggage policy" does not exist online at all - it is not on your website and it is not posted on tickets purchased for shows. We did not drive to the venue, so we could not easily stash the bag in a vehicle, and were not offered any accommodations or alternatives for where to place the backpack, besides outside with no supervision from anyone. They told us it was our fault for not having a secure location to place a bag - even after telling them we arrived via public transportation. We did not have a location to place our bags and the club refused to hold the backpack for us, since they have had issues with "luggage" in the past, and we also volunteered the security to search through the bag. In my experience, when a business does not have a policy posted publicly, then they have accommodated guests that do not know local policies. While local guests may know this, how are out of town guests supposed to know this rule? I would understand if the show was sold out and there was very limited space. This was not the case. The club was maybe at 40% capacity (this is generous), so it wasn't like they were crunched for space (for a BACKPACK). Staff was extremely rude and blamed us for not being aware of an internal policy that they do not post about. This is ridiculous. Please let the club know they should publicly post policies that turn people away from the door, even after we have paid for the show that night in advance. Unacceptable way to treat out of town guests. Please do better. I will not recommend this location to my friends or anyone visiting San Diego after this interaction. read more

The restroom situation was a bit wired, bcuz it was outside the property. the staff was ok however the seating arrangement was uncomfortable so we asked to get moved but the host was not very professional about it long story short he just said NO! So when the couple next to us asked the same question he did moved them, So of course that just got our attention, it did feel a bit racist!!.. But we spoke with someone else and they moved us! To echo my dear friend Claire D., you are probably better off ignoring a ton of these negative reviews for this place, especially about the doorman. I probably don't have much validation on this department since this review is actually for a not-so-recent visit. Here's the quirky part of this place. Heard of the phrase "Everybody's a comedian!"? When I was here, it turned out that almost everybody here actually was a comedian. As we all shuffled in, we noticed different individuals all along the way to our seats. We weren't sure if they were part of the security, promoters, stage crew, audio/lighting, manager, etc. Once the show started, the microphone kept getting passed to each of those individuals once their respective set was done. The only one who wasn't a comedian was our cocktail server. The comedy on a night that doesn't feature famous noteworthy comics like the ones we see at American Comedy Co. in downtown San Diego tends to be a hit or miss, usually the latter. In fact, it seemed like more of an amateur's night or the type of night where comics practice here on test dummies like us before they go onto other bigger and better things. The part of the night that somehow incited the best laughs weren't even from any material prepared by any of the comics. Rather, it was from the one guy who simply riffed off of the crowd. And somewhere in there, he deep-throated the microphone. And yes, we all hoped that mic was replaced before moving onto the next individual. These days, there's no real telling what to expect in a particular night here. At some point if/when I return here, I'll have a better idea of how things are here. Parking: Street. At night, they stop enforcing the meter spots at 6pm, which is fine if your show is after that time. FYI: - Don't expect taped-special calibur comedy. One guy actually froze up in the middle of his set. I felt kind of bad for him. - It's La Jolla, so the clientele (if it's still anything like it was in the past when I last visited) tends to be older and somewhat affluent. Went here on a Friday night for the 7pm show. I had purchased tickets for 2 from someone on the street corner at a farmers market (good to know it was legit!) It was $10 for 2 with the requirement of a 2 drink purchase per person. Drinks range from about $4-$12 so not a bad night out on the town. There is no parking besides street parking so give yourself extra time to find something. We were greeted by the doorman, friendly guy who started up a convo with me while my friend ran back the car because he forgot his wallet. You have to show your ID at the door before they let you in. Upon entering we stopped at the box office for the tickets and then we were promptly seated at a table in the front. My friend was nervous about being seated in the front and requested to move. We were allowed to pick any seats we wanted to move to without any problems. The staff and waitresses were all friendly and no complaints here about the service. The place is a bit dingy and out dated. The bathrooms are small, but not unclean. The chairs are a little too close together for comfort, I had to sit sort of sideways to avoid constantly brushing shoulders with my neighbor who I was not there with. The lighting over the stage could also be better, I was seated on the side and had to avoid looking in certain directions or I would be blinded. Make sure you come on a full stomach as they do not serve food, only a bag of popcorn for $4. The comedians were great! Myself as well as the audience laughed at the openers and headliner. If the review was for the comedians only I would have given 5 stars. I have definitely been to better comedy clubs on the east coast (more comfortable seating, serve food, more updated building, etc) but I wouldn't count this place out. Wow. Seating at this establishment is horrendous. We showed up early before doors even opened so we could get good seats. They sat us in a further row than expected, being that there were many seats unreserved in front of us. We were told they reserve the front rows for parties of 4 or more, but we saw multiple couples seated in front of us after we were seated. After complaining about this, staff and management seemed to not care, most seemed slightly annoyed. During the show the comedian was asking questions to us and a staff member came over and told us "not to yell"... the comedian was asking us questions directly?! We had a blast coming to the Comedy Store! The drinks were fair and the seating was kind of hokie but the show was fabulous. The popcorn was good and definitely helped because nothing for food or restaurants is open nearby in La Jolla. So make sure you eat before the show. The problem is that the staff sit on a weird rude high horse because they're coasting off the reputation of the club and they think this automatically makes them funny. It's pretty ironic because I've been a couple of times and seen the staff go up on stage for stand up bits and it really is ironic just how unfunny they are. In particular the jumped up angry door man (Steve I believe his name is) who thinks he's in the secret service or something and takes his job far too seriously in the expense of being rude to customers, who at the end of the day largely pay for his salary. Lighten up a bit bud. And a 20's something middle eastern female "comic" ~ who i guess does something of use to their staffing?? Don't let the bad reviews scare you off!!!! My fiancé and I came here for the first time last night for my 21st birthday. I was so stressed out about the bouncer possibly giving me a hard time because I read all these Yelp reviews. I handed him my ID and he looked at it, looked at me, and said "Wow you barely made it" with a chuckle (since it was my 21st birthday). We got inside, they showed us to our table and we ordered drinks and popcorn. My fiancé doesn't drink so he got a soda which was $5. I got the white gummy bear, it was really good. My favorite comedy place in San Diego. I love the realness of the place. The people who work here are professionals and work like a well oiled machine. They have an excellent doorman, greeters who will find you a good seat, great servers. They usually have free tickets if you sign up for their newsletter. A two drink minimum is required but if you are two people i recommend ordering a bottle of cava as it counts as four drinks and it's the best deal they have. The Comedy Store has been around since the '70s and they've left everything untouched just in case you were nostalgic for the good 'ol times. The walk down memory lane is free, but the drinks aren't and you'll probably end up paying for street parking since they do not have a parking lot. Don't be tempted to park in the Vons lot because they do tow! You should add about $10-$20 per person on top of the ticket price since they do require a 2 drink minimum. If you don't drink, you can get bottled water, sparkling water, hot chocolate, tea, etc. for about $5. Food is not served, unless you consider popcorn to be dinner. I know most comedy clubs charge a 2 drink minimum, which I dislike since I already paid $20 for a ticket. If you want good seats, you should get there about 30 minutes early. The inside is dark and the chairs can be a bit uncomfortable after a while, but you probably don't want to see the inside anyway so it's better that you're kept in the dark. Service was fine, but we did get there early. Our waitress was prompt at the beginning, but pretty much left us alone as the night went on. A tip one of the regulars told me was to get on their email list since they'll email you BOGO or free tickets. I would return if they emailed me deals. Visited the comedy store for the first time last week and I was pleasantly surprised by a number of things. 1.) The speediness in getting into the show 2.) The seating, even though we weren't anywhere near the front of the line our seats were very close to the stage! 3.) The drinks- yum!! Chocolate and espresso martinis! 4.) The band before the show- they were good! 5.) Last but last least the comedians- good mixtures of what appeared more/less experienced comedians but all had good material. I had an awesome time at this "hole in the wall dive" comedy spot. If you're wanting a beautiful venue with a blues band restaurant attached to it, this isn't that spot for you. If you're cool with a gritty, older, seedy, dimly lit vibe, you come to the right place. Aesthetics aside, you should come for the comedy and not for the decor atmosphere, am I right? Anyways, I will say the vibe of this place worked for me. I appreciate comedians like Richard Prior, Eddie Murphy (Raw), Robin Hughes, George Carlin, Kim Whitely, Red Fox, etc. The Comedy Store definitely had the vibe that before they became famous they probably performed here or something very similar to this. Very Gotham or the Boston esque. Like prior to coming on to stage the comedians probably took a bump and shot and was just as lit as the people in the audience. All that to say, it has a real and raw energy to it. There is a two drink minimum and the drink prices are pricey for sure but it's actually a good drink and it's definitely not comparable to TGIF cocktails- juice with a hint of alcohol. I got the raspberry lemon drop and after my second drink, I had a nice buzz. They do not serve food here which is cool with me because the last comedy spot I went to, my food came out in less than a minute after ordering it. I was super nervous about eating my $18 gray looking nachos. However they do give you a big bag of popcorn. I don't eat popcorn so I can't vouch for the freshness/tastiness of the popcorn. But I will say, I didn't smell the freshly popped smell like you do in the movies. It's free...does it matter!? We came to see Jay Chandrasekhar (Indian guy from Super Troopers). Prior to Jay coming up, we saw three feature comedians. They all were funny in their respective way and definitely meshed well together. Their style was adult humor with a lot of vulgarity which is right up my alley. Jay was surprisingly really funny as I am not a fan of super troopers. He had a bit when he was using the N word quite a bit. I didn't do a inventory check but I'm quite certain I was the only black person in the audience that night with the exception of the guy who passed out the stale popcorn. I was unbothered by it as I'm not easily offended and I'm not the nigg**. However, after his set, Jay rubbed my shoulders as he was exiting the room. I LOVE the comedy store. We go here probably once or twice a month, occasionally skipping a month. It is such a fun place. We have never had a bad experience with the staff or service. Drinks are a little slow to come but I think that is to be expected in this type of environment. Last time we were in the people next to us were being so rude. Speaking loudly to each other, telling stories as if they were catching up at dinner. My boyfriend asked them to quiet down and they immediately started targeting us with their volume. We were really excited to come here for a friend's birthday, and the whole evening went south, almost immediately. We went in and sat down, and everyone already seemed intense; we ignored it. We took pictures around the logo and went to sit down. The waitress comes over, and accuses my friend of taking a picture of the comedian. She didn't, and told the lady that. It wasn't good enough. The lady got argumentative, and tried to take the phone. When that didn't work, she proceeded to go get Dbo, the security guard (eye roll). He came over, super aggressive, and started arguing that he seen her, and so on. My thing is you informed us of your policy, she already explained what happened, what is the point of continuing to get in her face and argue? It felt like some ghetto security guard trying to kick us out of a ratchet nightclub, for a picture we didnt take. We left 10min in. The situation could have been handled with alot tact. Ambiance: old, dusty, dark, and outdated. it is a smaller venue so there are no "bad seats". Doorman: as you can see by the multiple negative Yelp reviews, they need to fire their doorman and hire someone else. he's a scary guy who is unpleasant and rude. he wouldn't let our friend in from Canada because she didn't have a US drivers license. She did have her Canadian drivers license with her picture and age on it (nowhere on the comedy ticket does it state you need a US drivers license to get in; just a picture ID to show you're 21+). He said she had to have a US passport to get in. We got fed up with the doorman and demanded to talk to the manager who let her in. this isn't the airport where high security is required; it's a comedy store for goodness sake. Customer service: the service was average; it took some time to get our popcorn and drinks. I think it's ridiculous that they charge a minimum 2 drinks per person after we already paid $30 for each ticket. I get some other places that have free admission expect you to have a minimum purchase but admission fee AND minimum purchase??? Oh, did I mention most of the drinks cost over $10 and their small bottle of water/coffee each cost a whopping $5! So essentially each person will end up paying around $50-60 total. Bathroom: small with only 2 stalls each for men and women. Go to the restroom before or during the show. If you wait until after the show, be prepared to wait in a long line. Parking: the store is located on a busy street in La Jolla. there is a lot of car traffic and parking can be a nightmare. I suggest heading towards the residential areas to find free parking. It's 3-5 minutes walking distance from the store. Maz was super entertaining and we would definitely see him again but I would not want to come back to this Comedy Store. read more

Great date night with hubby! Reasonably priced bottle of wine, popcorn , lots of laughs = happy wife !

I've been here about three times. Each time the show was pretty good and I got some good laughs. Drinks are good but they have no food...except popcorn. Maybe that is standard for a comedy club but it would be nice to have some food. Only reason I they got 3 stars was because of the staff (not the comedians or host). They all act like they are doing you a monumental favor by answering a questions or providing you will basic assistance. Last week the bouncer demanded that we wait in the rain instead of under the awning...c'mon bro! We are not going to wait in the rain no matter how many times you tell us. LOVE this place. Last time the opening acts and the main comedian were super funny. Our waitress was awesome. We had no problem fulfilling the 2 drink minimum but didn't feel pressured for anything more. It's run by real people and not a big management so it feels like family. Jay Mohr my favorite comedian. $30. Two drinks $23 required + tip. Opener, setup (Bob), closer doors open at 615pm for the 7pm show which started about 7:15pm and ended at 8:30pm. There is a 9pm show too and its first come first serve seating assigned by the staff and doors open at 8:30pm for the 2nd show. They take your temperature and check id's.
