I've been going here for years. The people here are very nice and know what they are doing. I moved out of the area and tried another place but the work the did on my shoes were awful. Heel came off in an hour and when I went back yjey implied I did something with the heels! I now travel back to the Cobbler to get my shoes done. Just save all my repairs and bring them in all at one time. They also were able to fix my purse straps. My neice was impressed with their selection of work shoes as she has to go on construction sites every so often. I just love the smell of leather as you enter the store. No pleather here. read more

My husband loves these Jordan's. I used this company in June/July to get them fixed for Father's Day. When I sent them in they were I little older looking and the sole was coming off at the heal. When I got them back 6-8 weeks later they looked fantastic. My husband wore them 3 times over the next 2 months. On the 3rd wear he had to call me and ask if I had time to bring him a new pair of shoes at work because his newly "repaired" Jordan's were falling apart, worse than before. I feel I could have at least shoe goo-ed them back together better myself. I contacted them and they seemed very responsive, but the original 'quick' response that they were sorry and someone would reach out was the only communication I've received. They do a very sloppy and unthoughtful job. I brough 3 pairs of expensive shoes, each 700$ or more and they managed to mess up each and every one of them. Scuffs and glue, but most amazingly is the choice of a super thick rubber to make a sole for my evening shoes. It is so thick, that the heel does not stand on the ground except the very edge. I am not a cobbler, but I can easily see that it is very wrong. Have to find another place to redo the sole now. Another thing is a condescending manner of speech from the owner. MY DOG CHEWED MY SHOES! Last month, my bored pup managed to break into my room and find a few of my shoes. Apparently, she has a strap fetish and chewed thru 3 pairs of shoes including my Banana Republic sandals which was fairly new. Instead of tossing them i figured they were salvageable and brought them to The Cobblers. This shop has been around for decades and its definitely old school. They have a repair section along with boots and a wall of foot cushions, orthotics, shoe polish, and other accessories. After presenting my damaged shoe I was advised that it would definitely NOT be like new but will try their best. For $15 they fixed the strap in 3 spots...(naughty dog!). Of course, you can see the seam where my pup chewed but The Cobbler reinforced with a piece of leather underneath and stitched it for more support. Overall, I'm happy with the work and i can wear them again! I would advise calling in before you pick up your shoes...unfortunately, they were not ready as promised so had to pick up 2 days later which is not a problem if you live in Hayward. My new shoe repair spot. I try to pick a place that is located near work or home and is open at times that work for pick up and drop off. The Cobblers are convenient and they do great work! I first tried them out a few years ago. I was walking with my luggage from BART to the office and I heard my heel tip crack. No!!! I remembered the Cobblers are on my way to work. I stopped in and they were sweet enough to do a repair while I waited. When I realized that my usual place was proving hard to get to on the weekends I decided to get my shoes repaired here. Hidden gem in Hayward. They have fixed my boots, heels, purses so many times. They've saved my favorite boots from the bin so many times and fixed this purse I've been hanging onto for years trying to get the strap fixed. They're affordable and very honest if it's worth your time/money to get fixed. I had these boots I loved that I wanted to get fixed but they told me even fixed it would break again within the year bc it was such cheap material. They're also very affordable depending on what you need. I went into shop on10/30/18 at my doctor's referral. I needed a lift for the inside of my show and a build up on other shoes. When I entered the establishment via the Foothill entrance, there was a young man behind the counter helping a customer. So I decided to look around the store while i waited. (He never acknowledged me as in I'll be with you as soon as I am done here). The women's products were on the left side and the men's on the right with various displays in-between and a working area in the rear of the store. While waiting and never being acknowledged by the young man at the counter, I noticed a young man who entered from the back door. Immediately Rudy an older man came out to assist him. He commented on the guys' shirt ( red) that had driver something printed on it. Then another gentleman can in the store and was helped by Rudy. Still no acknowledgment of me. After the third man entered, I went to the back work area. A middle-aged man came in the back door with a sandwich and drink in his hand and asked if I was being helped. I said no and he went in the back room and in a minute Rudy appeared and asked how he could help me. I showed him the doctors business card and what the doctor wanted me to buy. Rudy acted as if he could not understand what a 5/8 inch lift or build up was. I finally asked him to show me sample lifts, and once he did, I asked if he could make one that is 5/8 inch which is what the doctor wanted me to have. He said yes. but it would be $20 and not ready until Wednesday. I said great however since I do not live in the area the earliest I could come back would be Friday. He then huffed and said he could do it right then if I would wait. I said great let's do that. He made the lift and charged me $25. He did not mention an extra charge for on the spot service. I was okay with paying the $25, and it would not dent my budget at all. I fel he was unethecial by not mentiioning the up charge for on the spot service. After making the payment, I told Rudy that I was disappointed with the level of service. I was planning to bring the four left shoes I left in my car for the build-up which was about $75 each. I told him about waiting on the three gentlemen and ignoring me. He then said "well, I am not calling you a liar but..."' I interrupted him and said yes you are calling me a liar. I turned and started walking to the front door and said they he should respect women and black people. The last thing I heard him say as I was exiting his business is he respects his wife or 62 years. He was trying to follow me out of the store as if he was going to be confrontational. I am NEVER going back. I shared my experience with my doctor who is a part of a large HMO. He said that he now has second thoughts about referring people to the cobbler. In this time of hateful energy being spewed all over the place, one does not need to experience hate when spending their money. I did a little research and found a cobbler much closer to where I live and a lot nicer. Plus the price was reasonable a bit more expensive, but I was treated with respect. Backstory: Most folks in the equestrian world know about E. Vogel boots. I found these vintage Vogels at an Oakland shop and knew I had struck gold, but with a 13.5" calf, they needed a little work. A friend and fellow equestrian referred me to The Cobblers. Party on. Fast forward to my final visit on July 9th. Rudy, the owner-cobbler, called the police on my husband and myself. I've never had anyone do that to me. As a paying customer am I that far out of my rights/wits to be displeased with less than satisfactory work? No. And that's me being kind. Back to the beginning: I called and explained the work to Rudy (install zippers and possible gussets) and he confirmed that he had just worked on some riding boots and I could have a look when I came in. Visit #1: Rudy took my measurements over breeches. I shared what kind of boots they were and how happy I was to have come across them and that my calf is only about an inch wider than the widest part of the boot. He opened up the back seam so that I could slide my foot in to make sure the foot size fit. It did! He asked if I wanted the leather revived and I said sure. That was always secondary to my being able to wear them. Then Rudy told me they'd be ready in a few days. I paid a $50.00 deposit and went on my way. Visit #2: The gussets weren't cut evenly and there was wild stitching about the top part of the boot. I didn't complain about it then. I hoped it would improve or maybe I was afraid to offend Rudy. The leather refinishing was done well, but upon trying them on, I could fit more than 3 finger widths inside the calf. English riding boots should fit like a second skin--tight even. Rudy sucked his teeth and fussed under his breath. He remeasured me. When I left the shop, I didn't have a good feeling that Rudy really knew how they should fit even though I showed him a picture of a rider on a horse wearing field boots, to which he reacted, "It's a horse!" He said he'd take an additional 0.25" on each side and I replied, always politely, that wouldn't be enough. I called him later that day to ask if bringing in a pair of my current riding boots to show him how they should fit, would help. "I don't see how that's going to help." Well, Rudy I just don't want you to do this over and and over again. "Well, I'm only going to do it once...one more time," was his gruff retort. Then he suggested that he take them in more, but glue them to avoid un-stitching and re-stitching and then I could try them again. Visit #3: On 7/5 the boots hadn't been adjusted and glued. I had brought in a pair of half chaps to show him how tight the fit should be. He asked me to come back again that same day. What the "h"? The entire point of my coming in was to try on the altered boot. That showed complete disregard for my time. He asked me to come back later that day because the glue would be dry then. When I returned later, the boots were still too big in the leg. I explained, again, how tight they need to fit. His attitude was grumpy, but he was willing to take them in some more. All the while, I remained cool, polite, courteous. Final Visit #4: On 7/9 we waited patiently for Rudy to finish with another customer and without a word, he brought out my boots. Still too big and there was glue on the boot and spots in the leather that were not there prior to 7/5. We explained that we were not happy with the workmanship and did not want to pay them any more money. Rudy demanded that they were 100x better than when I first came in--asking us "Who's going to see it?' He was rude, condescending and disrespectful. We firmly, yet calmly expressed our disappointment and that we wanted to call it a draw. So, Rudy started snatching one of the boots out of my hand. Cooly, I asked him to let go. Then he yelled that he was going to call the POLICE. Call them, we said. The police came, spoke to each party separately and finally I left with my boots, minus the $50.00 deposit, which I never wanted refunded anyway. One of the first rules of good customer service is to apologize when a customer is upset--whether you caused them to be upset or not. You never tell a customer that they are "very particular" as Rude told me. And in most cases, there is no need to involve the police if you have solid customer service practices in place...and integrity. A shout out to the cool, calm and collected Hayward Police Officer. This review is for the shoe shop, not the repair center, which I have found to be reliable and quality work. The main sales person, an older middle aged man, has always been in the shop part of the Cobblers when I've gone. I've looked at their shoes several times, and every time, I find this man to be argumentative, condescending and not well informed. When I recently asked him about the significant decline in quality and durability of even the high end brands, not to mention the cheapening of materials many of us have noticed, he seems to not even have a beat on this actually being the case. I noted several brands that they actually sell to him regarding my and my husband's experiences over the last 1-20 years, and his reply was something to do with knowing the sales reps for years - what does that have to do with the quality decline? They just want you to continue to sell their shoes, they're not going to tell you their product costs more but is inferior to what they used to manufacture. He also berated me for shopping on line, which we do so we can read reviews and see also see if other consumers have had the same problems with shoes and boots or if we just got a bad pair. It was difficult to keep my mouth shut, but I wanted to say: I try to shop local, but you sir make me not want to be at your store at all. Every time I've been in here, I leave feeling this same way. i used to have heel and toe taps placed at this shop, but found a place closer to my Castro Valley home. After a conflict with the owner of the latter one, (he cut my brand new leather flat, offered to pay for a new pair and became upset with me when I refused his offer to place taps on them! ) I thought about returning to The Cobblers. Finally, I needed new taps, so off I went and I am so glad that I did! The parking was ample even in front on Foothill Blvd. The gentleman at the repair counter was very pleasant and accommodating. Not one to attempt to gouge the unwitting customer, he recommended replacement of the old taps rather than the entire heels, plus new taps. He offered to place them on both pairs of footwear while I waited. Meanwhile, I browsed the rest of the repair area and replenished my shoe cream stock. I was surprised to find one to match my reddish brown boots. Of course, the job was done very neatly without any damage to the footwear. Thank you very much to The Cobblers! read more

Do you have that pair of shoes that you love. I mean LOVE. The ones you wear every day and can't imagine not wearing because they are so comfortable? I do. I bought them for a pretty penny about seven years ago but they are the best daily shoes I have ever owned. I was not about to give them up (or buy a new pair) when the soles wore out and the insoles got holey. My husband took them to The Cobblers and I would lie to you if I did not tell you I was very nervous when I picked them up. However, he did an amazing job, you can't even tell there are new soles on the shoes. He replaced the heal of the insoles, sewed up parts of the leather and gave them a shine. Total cost = $46. At first I thought it was expensive. Then I realized what received for the price. I paid for a master craftsman to save an expensive pair of shoes that would have been thrown away and would have cost almost 8x that to replace. Well worth the price. I dropped off a purse which needs a strap replaced and my favorite pair of boots which also need to be resoled. These boots are irreplaceable as I bought them out of the country and are unlike anything I can find in the States. I completely trust him with my boots. Trust The Cobblers with all of your leather goods or any shoes you need resoled. No need to throw away your favorite shoes or put up with their bad soles anymore! read more

I don't often give bad reviews but this one is really warranted. I dropped off four pairs of shoes to be repaired. They could not do any faster than a week - which is fine. I came back to pick them up and one of the pairs was only half repaired (they did the heel but not the toe); so I had to leave one pair behind which again they couldn't do any faster than a week. I would assume that given the situation, they would rush this order but no. NOW the first day I wear one the pairs they repaired, the heel comes off. So out of four pairs, at least two were shoddy work! I went back to get my shoes back (they hadn't even started the work 5 days later) and to ask for a refund on the shoes where they replaced them with a heel that fell off. Icing on the cake: the associate's attitude! Super rude! I took the two pairs to another cobbler and they were horrified by the poor job that had been done on the shoes! Came here to get vibram lug half soles put on my Wolverine 1000 mile boots to prolong life. At first I wasn't too sure if it would turn out right. It took a little less than a week to finish but when I picked them up boy was I surprised. They looked great! If you need a skilled Cobbler and you're around the area come visit the Cobblers. Apparently they're a multi-generation cobbler and opened shop since 1932! I've heard so many horror stories online and I was definitely impressed by the product I received.
