BUYER BEWARE
I previously had a great experience with The Coating Man and even left a 5-star review. However, my latest experience with them has been a nightmare. I chose The Coating Man for painting my new $750K custom home instead of the builder's paint contractor due to my past positive experience. Bill Gates visited the site and provided a quote in September 2024, fully aware it was a new construction build. Our builder agreed to work with them based on our strong recommendation.
In October, Bill met with the builder, discussed timing, and acknowledged that the painting process would involve a first coat followed by a final touch-up near the end of the build. In November, the paint quality was HORRIBLE, with runs, missed areas, bad cut-ins around windows, and poor caulking. We had to have them come back to sand most of the house and repaint. On December 1st, Bill stated via text that "the house measured larger than anticipated, and they would need to order more materials."
During that exchange, Bill asked about the interior, to which I responded that it was fine for the first coat, and the remaining work could be completed during the final punch-out. Bill confirmed he "would coordinate with Rodney on the timeline." Rodney is the superintendent for the build.
On February 14, 2025, our builder mentioned another customer wanted the same black house color we had chosen. I reached out to Bill with the news and mentioned that once our home was completed to the builder's quality standards, they would start offering The Coating Man as a luxury paint option. Bill was excited at the opportunity.
However, on February 17, I was informed that the builder was struggling to get any response from The Coating Man regarding the completion of the paintwork. I reached out to Bill directly, and things went downhill. Bill claimed the request was "just springing it on us last minute." In reality, he had been informed in both October and December, with an agreement that a 1-2 week notice would be given. The builder had also been trying to reach him for the first two weeks of February with no response, which is why they contacted me.
Bill eventually met with the builder on-site for a review of the remaining work. The Coating Man then demanded an additional $4,500 for completing the interior paint, after we had already paid $9,600, despite this work being part of the original agreement. They also demanded that the builder cover additional costs for exterior coating due to their miscalculations of the home's size. However, the contract was between The Coating Man and myself, NOT the builder. I never agreed to additional payments, nor was there any signed contract regarding these extra charges.
The signed contract explicitly states - Exterior Coating System - Cool-Wall systems - Coat entire exterior of home with limited lifetime coating - Included.
Due to these issues, we were forced to cut ties with The Coating Man. Bill has since threatened to sue me for defamation if I post a negative review and has also threatened to file a lien against my home unless the builder pays for the additional materials, despite their own miscalculations. Furthermore, he has stated that he will not honor the lifetime warranty stated in the contract unless the builder pays for the additional materials.
This experience has been extremely disappointing. We have referred The Coating Man to many friends--some of whom have already used them--and our daughter and her husband were preparing to contact them for their custom home. Additionally, our builder, who has a stellar reputation in Northeast Florida, was planning to begin offering The Coating Man as a premium option. Due to this unacceptable experience, none of this will happen, and I am now deeply concerned for my friends who have already used this company for their homes.
If you are considering The Coating Man for your project, I strongly urge you to reconsider. read more
