Took my mum here a few months ago for her first ever theatre experience, and she was just in awe of the place. They just don't build theatres like this anymore. The Civic occupies one of the most prominent street corners in central Auckland, and the imposing facade fits the location perfectly - it's a landmark. Head inside, and there's a definite sense of occasion - red carpets, carved golden walls and chandeliers. The theatre itself is perfectly sized and incredibly ornate - the walls are beautifully carved, and the roof is designed to look like the night sky - you could almost be sitting out under the stars in plush comfort. Whatever's on, the Civic has a wonderful sense of occasion that you just don't get at lesser venues. We've knocked down plenty of grand old buildings in Auckland - I'm glad this one has been kept perfect over the years!

Everybody loves the civic. If you pay a visit, you'll immediately understand why. It's imbued with that magnificent kind of faded glory which just washes over you and seeps into any performance or work you see there. They program a wide variety of pieces, ranging from big, boring musicals which have traipsed over from Australia or America, to contemporary and classical works from the Royal New Zealand Ballet. The Civic even serves as the hallmark venue for the New Zealand International Comedy, Film, and Arts festivals. The theatre is huge and beautiful and is curiously fitted with some kind of subcontinental facade (complete with plasticine tigers and an ultra-whimsical roof which looks like the night sky (complete with ebbing and flowing clouds).

I went to see Cats. Awesome service and performance. Great atmosphere. Service and staff was friendly guide to the seats. During the break you can have some drinks and beverage. I would recommended as a high quality service

So beautiful is how one could describe it. It is fantastic to know and see a building which has been kept in such architecturally beautiful condition, so ornate and colourful. There can't be much if anything in the country that can compare to it. Not just that it is also a credit to those who work there that the place is kept clean and the staff are good at what they do. We went to see the Illusionists 2.0 there and that was fantastic, but what a big contrast though no damper on the show it was to have all the multi coloured lights , strobes and smoke etc within the old ornate building. And to top it all off you have the star filled sky above....

I loved the show by Shen Yun Performing Arts, but also very much loved the theatre itself, very impressive.

And let it wash, and wash and wash all over you. Seems like the upstairs is very different from the basement and likewise with the weekday vs the weekend. Besides the live jazz the Rogue Society gin martini with anchovy stuffed olive was hands down one of the best I've had in Auckland. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I even loved the mailboxes of paper towels in the loo... it's all in the details!

But ever since 1885 opened, it has changed the game plan a bit, purely because we don't want to be left on the outside looking in. This is the kind of bar where you need to do a bit of homework before you attend. If there's an event on at Vector, then you need to be there before the show ends, otherwise you're not going to get in. So needless to say 1885 is popular, and you need to dress up to get in, and you'd want to anyway, as you'll be rubbing shoulders with the rich and beautiful. Who am I kidding, if you hang out at 1885, you are the rich and beautiful.

He says it's because it reminds him of the pubs in our hometown in the UK and I don't think he's wrong. I've only met up with him a few times in here but I too think it's a great little place. The staff are always really friendly, there's a great selection of beer (including their home brewed lager) at a reasonable price and there's always been ample seating during after work hours. They've also got a really varied selection of live music and events on every week so there's enough to keep you entertained (the pub quiz in particular is usually a winner). I've not eaten in here but the food on the menu always looks really intriguing. They've got a really wide selection of vegetarian and vegan food and things that are just a little out of the ordinary.

It was early in the day so definitively not ready for a full on session but a cold cider was perfect. The bar is massive with prime corner real estate! Plenty of seating at the bar, tables just behind along with benches running along the windows. If it were my local, I would be there on Sundays just to people watch and pass a few pints. There is also a chef in the kitchen, with a menu broadcast on chalkboard above the bar. Live music and other fun activities await weekly. Another plus to this bar is that there is a genuine Italian espresso machine. The brand escapes me, but it is one of only two in all of New Zealand! He said it makes a mean espresso and for someone who loves coffee this is an invitation to return.

Not too big that it feels empty, or the sound is too tinny, and not so small that you're spending the whole time frustrated at people's hair in your face. I've seen a number of great bands here ranging from pretty mellow music to raging nights. There is a seated circle around the top, which numerous musicians see as a challenge. By this I mean they scale the stage and clamber their way around the whole of the top of the venue while belting out a tune. Awesome. There is a pretty large bar at the back of the venue so you can float in and out of the crowd for drinks before, during and after the show. There is also a little area to the side which they use for merchandise sales. Great venue, good times

The venue is located on the outskirts of the city centre, but it's all good because Galbraith's ale house is directly opposite. Not a bad idea to pop in there for a few quality beers before the show (because you'll be drinking crappy beers for the rest of the night).
