In…read moreDecember of 2022 I went for colonoscopy and was diagnosed with Colon Cancer that brought my world as I knew it to and end so I as a catholic reach out to God and attended this church that was recommended to me by dear friends. I fell in love the minute I walked in. It's beautiful and peaceful and very welcoming. I was blessed by the priest after the mass after telling him my diagnosis. January of 2023, I was in the hospital having my surgery to remove the cancer and part of the spleen it was attached to. I was hospitalized for 2 weeks because of complications and was sent home with an attached colostomy bag, and 5 weeks later, I was hospitalized to have it reversed and removed. I spent a week there and made beautiful kind friends with the nurses and doctors at NW. I'm cancer free due to their care and everyone prayers. I visited the church again this past Saturday to thank the priest for his blessing, and he kindly said, "I was just God's messanger, and you are a miracle child." I took that to heart because I've always preached to everyone to be kind, and here I was in front of this religious man telling me I'm a miracle. God bless him, my NW nurses, and my team of doctors, especially my surgeon Dr. Poilyn and Dr. Chang. Please go visit this church whether you are Catholic or not. It's open 24 hours every day, and it's a beautiful church. Also, it has a gift shop open on Saturday.

I have stayed a parishioner all these years because it has helped me become a better person by reinforcing on a weekly basis the message of good and God. I have also found that with over 60 clubs over the years I have been able to apply my beliefs with the churches PADS ministry for the homeless, the Men's Club(helping create a sense of community with their annual fish fries, baseball games, etc), with Lake County United(addressing issues with affordable housing and mental illness), the gardening ministry(who does not see God's beauty in nature) and in my small bible study/reading group. If you are looking to become a better version of yourself, I encourage you to visit St Mary of Vernon's church and visit with some of their groups:). And I swear, the priests and other religious leaders at the church know this about me. It's like they can see that I don't really believe. I feel like a freakin' fraud every time I get communion. But... that is another story for another day. I blame this on whatever Catholic guilt I may have. Anyhoo, if you are going to mass on the big holidays (ie: Easter and Christmas) - get there EARLY. Otherwise, you will have to sit with the latecomers (and the crying babies and rowdy children) in the original section of the church. The church was renovated a few years ago and it looks really beautiful. Thankfully, they do have two large projector screens so you can see what's going on with the mass. You can hear alright back there too, but if you want the real experience, try to snag a seat in the actual church section. On the plus side, the choir is really great. Sometimes, they play upbeat tunes, which gets me out of my sleeping with my eyes open daze. Bottom line, nice church, good choir, get there early to snag a seat. 3 solid stars since I'm not religious, but I can spare the hour to go if requested by family.
