Is it strange to write a review on a synagogue.... ? If I don't give it 5 stars am I going to be in trouble with the big man upstairs, and by the big man I mean the Head Rabbi? Lucky for me, I know the Head Rabbi quite well and I believe he would be happy to know that I decided to give you a peak into this sacred space....
Central Synagogue is positioned in the leafy Eastern Suburbs.... it is a magnificent modern building worthy of an array of architectural awards - it's truly glorious...
The congregation is headed up by Rabbi Wolff - a New York Chabad Rabbi who is passionate about creating a modern Orthodox environment where ALL people feel very welcome..
I've know Rabbi Wolff for years and he is one of the most special human beings i know...he is a smart, astute man who is warm, compassionate, learned, savvy and realistic... he is sincerely passionate about Judaism and his congregation and he has inspired many Jews in Sydney to become more involved with the Judaism....
The choir which sings on Shabbat and Festivals is truly quite phenomenal... you will feel like you're being treated to an first class operatic concert, whilst connecting with your spiritual side...
The building and environment can be quite overwhelming... it's marble floors and high ceilings are quite breathtaking and the community can sometimes feel as posh as the interiors... it is hard when you first arrive to get noticed but if you tell someone you're new...you will be looked after...
For a unique perspective at Modern Orthodoxy i highly recommend Rabbi Wolff and his Central Synagaogue.
Also 3 last things to know:
1- Security is very tight - if you are new you will be questioned quite severely, its not personal, but unfortunately a necessary evil because of the safety threats to the Jewish community. The security is highly trained, so please be patient with them....
2- It can get noisy (something no one should be proud of) people do like to talk....so if you're looking for absolute quiet, this is not the place for you.
3 - Dress smart - conservative. Women are encouraged to wear dresses and skirts. read more
