Nice looking place with friendly staff. I was intrigued to know more about these tapioca based drinks. Mmmm they are absolutely delicious.
I asked the staff about the calorie content as I know tapioca is pure starch and the milk was very creamy. Staff reassured me that these drinks have practically no calories which means they either haven't done their homework or they are being misleading. A small milk tea contains 440 calories, of which 216 are from fat.
That's not the only bad news. The Germans are claiming these black tapioca pearls the drink contains have various and sundry nasty cancer-causing carcinogens in them. researchers found traces of polychlorinated biphenyl (organic pollutants) in the samples tested. The authorities are proposing that all bubble tea be sold with health warnings.
Its a shame as those tapioca balls taste really good but I won't be drinking that stuff anymore and neither will my children read more
