Favorite used bookshop in the city! The shelves are extremely organized and their books are well priced. They also have shop cats which I love. If you buy their tote bag and bring it with you when you go you get a discount on your total as well.

Who can refuse cute chubby cats walking around with you while you're perusing through good conditioned used books all for less than $4?! I cannot believe such a place exists, right besides the main free library of Philadelphia! They are neatly organized, easy to find sections with lots of aisles to go through. Very friendly staff that will point you out if you need to look for a certain book. There are also DVDs and CDs as well for real cheap. Sometimes there is a box of free books outside the shop, feel free to dig through it

This is a really cute thrift book store right behind The Free Library. It is entirely made of donated books that are sold at cheap prices (think 2-3 dollars per book) and all proceeds go to The Free Library. As a bonus there is a resident cat who will accompany you as you peruse the shelves.

This was thee most pleasant surprise to stumble upon a few weeks back. It's affiliated with The Free Library. It's very unassuming and has an old school schoolhouse vibe. The guy who greeted me (I can't recall his name which pisses me off because I believe in giving credit where credit is due ) but he was super friendly and helpful. He told me that all of the books are donated and the print posters are created and sold at a cost. The books cost $3. It's a pretty neat concept. I enjoyed perusing through the aisles to look at various books by different authors, wasn't looking for anything in particular. I did find a great book on philosophy so I had to buy it. My favorite part was seeing the wall in the back lined with vintage books. I love the smell of older books even when the pages are yellow because they're just so timeless. A page can yellow but the ink won't fade and the words that authors left behind leaves a legacy that's everlasting. Pretty neat idea if you ask me so I would be lying if I said I didn't run my finger across the fabric bound cloth covers and open one of them up to take a whiff of one of them. I'm weird I know, but I just the love the fact that you can read someone's else's thoughts put down on paper. It's magical to me hence why books are so important to me. They also sell DVD's and CD's if I'm not mistaken. I even think they may have Vinyl records. Not 100% sure. I know the Free Library does. I'll be sure to donate some of my books there when I'm done with them:) Highly recommend this place if you just wish to browse or if you actually wish to shop for a book or two. The books available all seemed to be in great condition. Yes they may be used but most of them are like new. Plus the sustainer service was great! At least when I went there. I do wish to mention because after reading the review before mine, the girl mentioned a ramp for those that are handicap. She said they removed the ramp which upset her though I'm happy to say it's back! They didn't "chuck" it as she mentioned. It's very much there and it made fir one if my favorite parts of the store, besides the cutely decorated chalkboard wall.

Every time I visit a new city, I try to make it to at least one bookstore. I can't help it. Some may say it's an addiction. Others merely shake their heads. I say they don't understand. I have lived and breathed books since the dawn of time! Don't judge me! Bookstores have personalities and often present unique perspectives in addition to carrying interesting selections. This one is no different. Not only do they have cats roaming free (how awesome is that?), but also they have different radio shows playing depending on where you are browsing to add an intellectual accent to your book search. Their fiction section is excellent. And their prices are great! $2 for most paperbacks. How can I not fall in love? Cats + cheap, great quality books = match made in heaven. I only wish a store like this were closer to me. Guess I'll just have to visit the city again soon!

Their prices are a bit higher than you'd expect online or at a chain bookstore, but I find that very justifiable as all of their profits go towards running the shop and other social justice missions. The volunteers at the store were great as well and were happy to answer questions or direct us to where certain books were.

First, to address the person claiming "they are all racist here"…read more This is an ANARCHIST BOOK STORE. They have books on critical race theory, yes. They also have books on queer studies, feminist literature, Muslim education... the list goes on and on. Do you understand what anarchy is? At any rate I seriously doubt the black and brown employees who have or do currently work or volunteer at Wooden Shoe would appreciate being called racist, so why don't you, you know, fuck off and shop somewhere else? That being said. Wooden Shoe is an exceptional resource for books on any number of topics. They tend to skew toward literature on social justice issues that run the gamut, so you're not going to find the latest pop culture biography or new fiction. Books are full price, so expect to pay $35 for a new hardcover, but they also have a ton of $1-5 second hand books, plus a really cool section of free and cheap zines and small print publications. I've been shopping here for it seems like a decade, and as a queer, gender non-conforming biracial person, the idea that they are racist is comical bordering on fully ignorant.

You'll find things separated by genre upstairs and a lot of great suggestions for local authors and new reads downstairs. Great ideas for gifts, a lot of hyper-local reads and trinkets, and just a great way to expand your mind for an afternoon. I like getting a beverage, walking around, and reading backs of books to add to my list. I typically prefer to buy from small, local bookshops, but when I know I need something specific (in this case, a smutty beach read and the new Sally Rooney), I tend to gravitate here for ease. That being said, they didn't have the exact smutty beach read I was looking for! I know Emily Henry is Emily Henry and it's spring break season but...come on. We must keep her stocked for the girlies! Overall, a great option for killing time in center city and refilling your literary cup with inspiration. Happy reading!
