The Black Monarch

What a beautiful getaway The Black Monarch is! We loved our stay, loved the gorgeous and unique decor and customer service. I recommend getting a group together and renting out all the rooms. It's perfect for a creative retreat! Also, the town of Victor is amazing and has such character! You may just see a few deer bouncing down the street! Thank you for the wonderful stay!!!

It's freaking bats.

We booked this hotel to experience the macabre, goth and serial killer theme it provided and were able to make it coincide with the Steampunk festival. I booked online, got a door code for a key I never needed because vendors were using the same door to set up downstairs. Our room, #7 Jack the Ripper, like all rooms had keys on the wall by the doors and we let ourselves in. We loved our room, so much history and info. The common areas like the dining room, bathrooms (only 1 pictured) and the amazing kitchen were decorated in the same aesthetic. Everything was clean and well stocked. Victor doesn't offer much in the way of dining (2 cafes and 2 bars) so we walked over to the general store and were able to make food on the kitchen. Beds were SO comfortable. Only downside was thin walls (expected in a historic building) and our door would not stay shut unless slammed or locked. Still, we plan on retuning and staying in another themed room.

I'm shaking my head at some of these reviews, but I'll keep my opinion of the low quality efforts of these people to myself. I booked The Black Monarch for two nights during April, 2022. My friends booked two other rooms as well, though one dropped out last minute (and as far as I know, was cool with the refund policy). I stayed in the Black Annis room which was delightfully well done with plenty of lighting and awesome oddities and curiosities throughout the room, though I will admit the kitten was un-nerving, but I just placed a shirt over it and went on with my life. The bed was comfortable, with faux animal pelts and plenty of pillows, I felt right at home. I loved the idea of a shared kitchen and wish I had further researched the accommodation's and brought supplies and groceries. The two shared bathrooms were great, no complaints, plenty of room to move around and I very rarely ran into another guest using the facilities. My friends who stayed in the Tesla room were equally impressed with the design and spaciousness of the room (seriously it was huuuuuge). It had plenty of natural light and at night had other forms of lighting so it was bright and easy to read before bed. It was well stocked with books including a very cute pop up book that I may have immediately ordered for myself. The beds were just as comfortable in the Tesla room as they were in my own. Adam greeted me when I arrived, he was knowledgeable, friendly, and definitely not stand-off-ish at all. He gave me all the info I needed from parking to where to eat, to history of the town and provided a map that was incredibly useful. I'm really excited to see what he, his wife, and comrades do with the original parlor space on the first floor. I'm already working on convincing my spouse to visit this summer. Pros: - Safe, with chain locks on bedroom doors for extra security - Fast Internet for us remote workers - Knowledgeable staff - Comfortable accommodations - Provided travel necessities such as hair dryers, lotion, shampoo/conditioner - Affordable boutique experience worthy of a larger city in a unique, small town - In room mini-fridges - Didn't get annoyed with all my questions and conversations - Apparently werewolf proof during full moons Cons - I had to leave - If you're not from a high elevation area locally, the town is at just under 10k elevation, acute mountain sickness is very real so make sure you're prepared. I wasn't. (Not a hotel dig, but a warning to other travelers) - Locals at the Side Car warned me about it being a full moon and making sure I went to the hotel and locked up and not wander around. Which obviously means that it's a town of werewolves. /s.

Our room had a couch and nice corner chair

This is my type of hotel! The room was so beautifully decorated. Dark and mysterious. The beds were comfortable and there is a communal kitchen and bathroom. We stayed in the H.H.Helmes room, I'd like to stay in each room at least once. Phantom coffee just downstairs is great and a little oddity gift show as well. Victor is a very interesting little old gold mining town with lots of history.

Leaving a 3 star review as I personally haven't stayed here, but not for a lack of trying. But after a recent incident with their booking staff and a rude interaction with their Facebook group admins AND seeing them beg for positive reviews after some "unhinged trolls" left some negative reviews I thought I'd add myself to those "trolls". At the beginning of October me and my wife made a reservation by call in for a date next week so me and her and some family could go on vacation. We had this planned for a while. After making the reservation we didn't see a charge on our card so we called them back and told them about it. Their staff said they weren't sure what happened and would take care of it and call us back. They never did. So my wife called them EVERY WEEK and asked them about our reservation and why we weren't charged, they said they would call us back about it, we never received a call back or had any missed calls from them. We learned today that our card had been declined, our reservation was never made and that the date wasn't held even though we had been calling about it every week. We then were told we were supposed to go through airbnb to make the reservation in the first place. NO ONE told us this until today after calling multiple times beforehand. I messaged them in what I thought was a professional and calm manner but received a "something must be wrong with the phones, we didn't get any missed calls either" as well as them saying "she says she called 20 times earlier, but have no missed calls from that number. I'll call the phone company and see if some thing's wrong". Keep in mind she got an answer all but one time she called and proceeded to call back afterwards and got an answer. They didn't ask for any information from me, or any dates or anything but knew what I was talking about, so they clearly have information on me. But then proceeded to say they didn't have a reservation for that name (I didn't give one) or credit card charge. And I was told again that their preferred booking method was airbnb. Which was never mentioned to us until today. I've included screenshots of the conversation I had with their Facebook people, as well as their comment chain requesting positive reviews for a $20 discount on a person's next stay.

Stayed here once - it was cool. Tried to rent out the whole hotel and had to reschedule because of covid. I paid $1000 to rent the whole thing. The owner double booked the new date, agreed to refund the full amount if I sent back some gift cards he had given me in good faith for holding my money, and he only refunded half upon receipt of the gift cards. His communication with me has been rude ever since. Do not recommend.

Black Annis room

This place is a gothic dream. I took my husband there for his birthday and I will absolutely be going back. We stayed in the Black Annis room and now I just want to see all of the other rooms. The bed was very comfortable and everything was clean in the room and the bathrooms. Having a full kitchen to use was also a bonus for us. We also saw the manager while visiting the attached coffee shop below the hotel and he was incredibly nice. I am so excited to go back and see more of this wonderfully unique hotel.

So amazing! These rooms are gorgeously and thoughtfully decorated. We stayed in the Nicola Tesla room which was beautiful. The other room were open so I peeked in. Very very amazing. One bathroom, so be aware of that, however they do provide bathrobes in each room so you can shower quickly and go to your personal room. There is a shared kitchen as well. Very reminiscent of college dorm rooms... if your college dorm was serial killer themed. The town is basically a ghost town but everyone is very friendly. Lots of old architecture and memorabilia around. Really love this place and I hear they have a second place in Denver that is hippie themed... I will have to check it out!

Fees added through Airbnb. Gentleman stated it "wasn't true" that booking through Airbnb added almost $100 to price.

Where to start?…read more First the host was full of annoying texts, "what time will you be there?" And "tell us when you get there." Okay mom with my curfew. NO ONE is at the desk, so it shouldn't matter to these people when I get here. Send the codes and mind your own business. Only two of three windows had any shades. The bathroom is tiny (I don't care- it IS an old hotel) BUT when the window shade is missing, I couldn't change my clothes or get in and out of the bathroom without people outside potentially being able to stare right on it. Excuse me for wanting to feel secure with my privacy... For context the building across the street has occupied rooms with windows with a direct view into this room. Forget sleeping even a minute after sunrise.... But hey- who wants to sleep or rest on a weekend getaway. TV took a a feat of mechanical engineering to get it work. Ridiculous. The shower head had a crack in it, which sprayed water all over the bathroom and made a reasonable shower unattainable. *sigh* There were potential good points, I like the location, but I also like Victor, I'll pay a little more and stay at the Ghost Lounge again. Now THAT was an amazing stay. Ummmm parking? On the street and not too far. It's historic and some of it is cute. The elevator was super adorable. Yeah, truthfully, I doubt I'll ever step foot in this place again. If the hosts are going to be supremely irritating, they should have a place worth visiting that shows they ACTUALLY care about the guest experience and has ANY indication of some kind of customer service.

The facilities and horses are absolutely wonderful - the accommodations were clean, comfortable, and beautiful. The horses were well-trained and well cared for. However, the negative part of my experience entailed the owner's(Daniel Grey) approach to his riding instruction and 'life-coaching.' He has absolutely no education or training that certifies him as a counselor or any other kind of mental health professional. I don't think he even has an undergraduate degree from any accredited university. Yet, he claims that he offers 'life-coaching.' My experience with his 'life-coaching' was quite unacceptable. I was met with sexist remarks such as, "You're a lot smarter than you look!" and a less than positive response when I revealed that I was a psychology student. (He seemed to think that was comical, for whatever reason.) The entire riding instruction experience was strange to say the least, as extremely elementary concepts about horse behavior were explained to me as if I were 8 years old. I spent more than an hour with Mr. Grey in the loft of the barn, discussing these concepts in excruciatingly boring and rudimentary detail. (This wouldn't have been that big of a deal to me if I weren't being charged an arm and a leg for it, of course.) We went through 'exercises' that were supposed to teach me how to be confident in physically commanding the horses, but all they really did was put me in uncomfortably close contact with Mr. Grey that was exceedingly distressful. Once on horseback, I thought things would get better. I was then told that I was 'riding as though I had a stick up my ass.' This was his sort of less than successful attempt at humor, I believe. The experience really didn't improve until I just flat out got away from Mr. Grey, and rode the trails with his assistant. It was a wonderful ride with one exception: the 'trail-lunch' given is unacceptable. After forking over several hundred dollars for this experience, I was given a leftover piece of BBQ chicken wrapped in Saran and some store-bought sandwich cookies. Yes, I am serious. I was expecting a catered, boxed lunch at the very least. Things were pretty strange even after that. i asked where the nearest grocery store was to get some food for my dinner, and despite that it was maybe 2 miles away or less, Mr. Grey insisted that he chaperone me so I didn't get lost. (I drove from Austin, TX to Victor, CO by myself and didn't get lost...) Then he insisted that he drive my truck, and refused to wear a seat-belt when I essentially forced him to ride as a passenger. He has serious problems with independent women, it appears. I do not doubt his competence as a horseman, but he needs some serious work when it comes to instruction and dealing with people in general. If he wants his business to survive, he really should hire instructors with better people-skills than himself.

Arriving at Grey Wolf Ranch at 10,000 feet, I was surrounded by beautiful and healthy horses with…read morecoats of all colors walking the grounds. They were roaming free, and this is why I was here. I wanted to learn to ride and ride to learn, as the owner, Daniel Grey, will teach you. Yes, you have a personal lesson with him before you ever get on a horse. Even very experienced riders and those that own horse ranches come to partake in his instruction, as it is very unique. Daniel makes you feel so comfortable with the animal, that we rode around the barn without reins and even walked behind a horse with confidence. We had guides with us at all times, and we set off for a ride...with reins, saddle, and it. The FANTASTIC thing is that we rode over this beautiful country side abreast with each other, or alone, in other words, it was not a trail ride like so many dude ranches offer......BORING! If you want a unique experience in a beautiful area, this is the place. Daniel and staff are kind and considerate. There is a log cabin lodge, tastefully appointed that you can rent out for groups. There is a cabin which we rented, and woke to deer looking in the window. If you don't care to ride, or not all in your party cares to ride, go and rent the cabin or lodge. Cripple Creek is right Dow the road and you can go party, you can gamble, and there a places to eat. The cabin and lodge have cooking facilities too. We drove to a nearby state park to hike that was awesome, and nearby areas have a grocery store, and as Colorado always presents it's natural wonders, you can drive to some nearby areas to shop and sightsee. Remember, Pike's Peak is close by. For those that want a winter vacation, try Grey Wolf Ranch in the winter and ride in the snow. Use the grounds for reunions or for a wedding. Someone was doing that one day, while we were riding. Yes, computers and cell phones work, and the cabin has a TV and stereo. You are going to a first class horse ranch...in style. I rate it a 5 on a scale fro 1 to 5, and, yes, I would return. His ranch has been a success, so much so, that he has one in the Dominican Republic.
