Eating for a Cause It's pretty well established that I love to eat. I am also passionate about animal rescue. When I discovered a place that allows me to combine my love of food with a cause I support, you know I'm all in. I visited the Black Cat Café in Devon, PA last week. It's an easy to miss place located just off the Lincoln highway, but right near the Whole Foods, just in case you need a landmark. I felt like I was walking into a friend's quaintly decorated kitchen. The space is very bright and open, every table had a table cloth, there was art hanging on the walls. It is a very warm and welcoming space. I ordered the smoked turkey with Irish cheddar panini. The turkey was off the bone, the herbs in the herb mayonnaise were picked and chopped right after I ordered and the cheese was melted to perfection, I hardly missed the caramelized onions, which the server let me know they were out of when I ordered. The portion was generous, and included a lovely side of grapes and vegetable crispy fries, which were a lovely alternative to potato chips. I also ordered sweet green tea, which may or may not have been home made, but it was a perfect accompaniment to my meal. The café serves salads and tea sandwiches as well and I think they are reasonably priced considering the full portions and quality ingredients. My whole lunch came to less than $10, which is a steal compared to what I can spend on the hot bar across the street. The other, most important reason for giving the Black Cat Café a try is that all proceeds go to PALS animal rescue (http://www.palspets.org/). And since I am a die hard animal rescue supporter, I think it's worth supporting this restaurant - the fact that the food is good is a plus in my book. Unlike my usual lunch forays, I did not try any deserts as I had to get back to the office. I don't have call to be in Devon on weekends, so I have not tried their weekend offerings, but if you're looking for brunch and perhaps to adopt a pet, you might try stopping by on Saturday when they offer adoption clinics. The Black Cat Café is perfect for a girl's day out lunch or if there is a new animal-loving sweetie in your life, what better way to say "I care"? The Black Cat Café is open Tuesday through Saturday from 8:00 to 3:00. They accept credit cards and they are always looking for volunteers. Cozy local place serving breakfast and lunch. All food is homemade with love and lots of good hearty and flavorful vegan options. I had a vegan grilled cheese with caramelized onions and tempeh bacon on Le Bus sourdough, it was delicious (and huge!) They use tasty, good melting high quality coconut or cashew based, not soy-based vegan cheeses. My mother had a regular BLT (they also make a vegan version with tempeh bacon and vegan mayo) which was also huge and all ingredients were super fresh. Everything came out piping hot and we didn't wait long despite how busy they were on a Saturday. The servers are all volunteer and very friendly and attentive. Chef is happy to answer any dietary questions. Great vegan and non-vegan options and a great cause. This is a non-profit so other than tips to servers, all proceeds go to the PALS shelter/foster program directly to care of the cats which is an added bonus. Oh my goodness, what can I say about a place that donates all of its time (EVERYONE is a volunteer), and all of its earnings, (including tips which they will NOT accept-the jar money is also donated) to my most favorite charity in the entire UNIVERSE-ANIMALS, who desperately need our help to survive in this ALL-TOO-OFTEN-Cruel world? I APPLAUD YOU!!!! Nothing further need be said. However, there are quite a few things I WANT to say.... I had been meaning to make it over there ever since I had read about them in Main Line Today mag. I'd passed by several times before that & thought it looked like a cute little place, but the impact was really made when I read about them, Who They Are, and What They Do. So finally, the other day I was going there specifically to DONATE money and possibly have lunch, lunch was definitely not the priority. I walked in and found it to be a warm and inviting little spot, really adorable. They also have really cute gifts at incredibly reasonable prices, (MOST BOOKS ARE $1.00), and no tax is added to gift items or meals. I was seated at an adorable little table by the window in the side room. My waitress, Beth highly recommended the chicken salad, she told me it was her absolute favorite. So, considering that was just what I happened to be in the mood for, I went with the chicken salad on wheat. It was SOO YUMMY, light & healthy, not a lot of mayo, & a few cherries added a nice tart/sweet flavor. Hate to sound like a broken record, but it was, if not THE Best Chicken Salad I've ever had, then it came darn close to it. And believe me, i am picky, particularly with chicken, as any gristle or fat grosses me out. With meat it is almost expected, & easily seen, but chicken fat skeeves me & there wasn't a drop on this chicken. Delish. Baked Goods looked wonderful & the chocolate they're made with comes directly from Paris, as the lady that manages the cafe has an apartment there. (Also had some fabulous little eiffel tower keychains in all diff colors for only $2.00-from PARiS-so sorry I didn't get a coupla those). Soooo, I bet you're wondering how I made out. Well after a great lunch I purchased some really cute knick-knacks, (BTW, I got an encyclopedia sized book for $1.00- it was a STEAL!!!). Then I donated a nice chunk of change (& i don't mean the "chump" kind). Next time I will up the ante- I'm shootin' for $1,000, say next month. Looked for a brunch place near Wayne for 7 of us this sunday and didn't feel like waiting at Nudy's. Went to Yelp and saw the Black Cat Cafe and the reviews were so good, we gave it a try. We were really happy to find out that it was a non profit staffed by volunteers and donates all proceeds to a no-kill rescue center for cats. The interior is very tastefully decorated and the people were friendly. The food was delicious! My husband and I had the quiche with salad. My daughter and her friends had waffles and grilled caprese sandwich and eggs. Everyone shared the dessert which was probably the best - chocolate brownie with ice cream and chocolate sauce that the owner brought back from France. The brownies were made from chocolate that came from Germany. It was simply luscious. It was the obvious that a lot of TLC went into this place. The prices were also very reasonable. Ate brunch here today and it was delicious! If you are a vegan or veggie head there are some good selections - like Vegan French Toast. Prices are great - 5 of us ate for under $50. Please keep in mind this is volunteer staffed and run and all proceeds go to support the PALS cat rescue. Had a great time with friends - had good food - and supported a good cause. Pros: The Black Cat Cafe is a quaint little restaurant in the heart of Devon. It is very cute! I love that all the proceeds go to a good cause: sheltered animals. The food was very good as well! I got the apple salad and the vegetable soup. Both were tasty, fresh, and you could tell that the chef puts a lot of effort into the food. They also have multiple vegan options that I would definitely look into trying next time. Cons: I walked so I didn't have this problem, but there is not much parking at all. Also, it takes them a while to make your food (took about 30 minutes for just my salad and soup) so if you are in a hurry or want a quick lunch, this may not be the place for you. I was a little disappointed because I wanted to try the Three-Bean soup. I ordered it but 15 minutes later the waitress told me they were all out and that they had forgotten to write it on the board. If you have a particular food item you want I suggest going early so that you don't have the same luck as I did. Also, my allergies started to act up inside the restaurant. When I looked down I noticed little gray hairs all over the floor. I'm not sure if they let cats inside the restaurant but that was just a little strange. If you have severe cat allergies I would ask just to be sure. I only have mild allergies so I didn't see a point in asking. Overall: A very pleasant little cafe with huge charm and a great mission! I would recommend this place if you have time for lunch or breakfast on a Saturday or Sunday. read more

I was staying overnight near King of Prussia mall and the Hampton Inn's breakfast buffet looked like a free for all with about 50 kids and their parents so my friend and I opted to go out and pay for breakfast. Yelp lead us to The Black Cat Cafe. I was attracted to the place as all the proceeds to the charity. That part of the experience is excellent. The food however was just average and the service was pretty slow. I seem to think they brew each cup of coffee in a Kurig in the back which takes forever. It's worth the stop to the help the kitties though. read more

What a weird place to eat. At first, it looks like a cute, upscale brunch place. But it turns out to be a charity thay benefits animals. The staff are all volunteers and obviously not fully into it as a job. There are only 10 tables, but you can count on a long wait for your food. The kitchen is tiny and it seems like the chef also runs the food out to the tables. The pricing is also odd, with small dishes like the breakfast sandwich ($6.50) being overpriced and the omlette ($8.50) underpriced. The place is clean and tastefully if sparsely furnished. The food itself is good but nothing to go out of your way for. The ingredients are fresh and tasty, especially the free range eggs. Coffee is first rate. The vegetarian bacon and sausage items are the same that you'd get at the grocery store. Bagels are small and bland. We've been here 3 times in 2 years and we only seem to come back when we forget what it was like the last time. I can't say there are any places in the area that are better, though. If you need someplace to eat then it won't be terrible here. Just moderate your expectations and don't come too hungry. read more

The fact that people are lying about this place is just plain sad! You're taking from the cats! I've been coming here for about a year now and was told by the manager about some bad reviews and I was shocked! So I decided to write a review about one of my favorite places. First, the options. You want breakfast? They got it! Sweet, salty, vegan, you name it! Even Gluten Free options. You want lunch? It's phenomenal. The breakfast burrito is the best I've ever had. The omelettes can be made however you want them and they're delicious. As a vegetarian, I am so grateful for all the vegan and vegetarian options they have. They're so accommodating I've even had vegetarian breakfast sandwiches. Now lunch: their soups- totally homemade. 100% no doubt about it. They're delicious and its been more than once that I've taken home a quart of their vegan chili! And I can never leave without dessert- try the decadent chocolate cake or key lime pie! To top it off- they have such a sweet wait staff. I adore the girls that work there and the know me by name now! The manager (who is also the chef) even comes out to say hi to the tables and make sure everything is ok- all while cooking your breakfast/lunch! She's awesome. You want a great meal? I love this place! Everyone here is a volunteer, except for the main chef, and all of the proceeds (including tips) go to PALS (a cat rescue). This restaurant is charming and has really good brunch and lunch food. I brought my mother here for Saturday brunch and I definitely plan on coming back with friends. It was suggested that I make a reservation for the weekend, but it wasn't too crowded when I got there that particular Saturday, so you might be able to get away without a reservation. The French toast was good, but the BLT didn't have much bacon, and my side order potatoes didn't come hot. They also asked if I'd like my juice refilled, and charged it, that's $5 for two small OJs...the sandwich came with vegi straws, clearly store bought in a big bag, not what i expect from what fronts a nice quiet cafe. Last Sunday, we had my mom's 90th birthday party at the Black Cat Cafe. It is such a unique place because it is run by all volunteers and the proceeds go to cat shelters. I wish I had known of the Black Cats Cafe history as a cat rescuer. My husband and I just stopped by the other day for a quick breakfast, Took awhile to get our menus and after ordering an egg sandwich with veggie sausage and an egg omelet which came in an half hour. I would never bother with the egg sandwich ,it was dry as a bone and the veggy sausage had absolutely no taste, even with the good deeds they do they need to perk up their offerings. I'll go back but next time try their French Toast which looked great and if that doesn't work they'll have to help the kitty's without my help. The place is pretty quirky though and very clean, the people are friendly and you are not rushed. Berkley Road is on a quiet road just down the street from the Marriott. Their coffee is terrific and the menu can be very eclectic. My suggestion would be for the volunteers to brush up on regular service and make this place a profitable one that will really do some good.for the cat rescue. read more

Had brunch at the Black Cat today. It has always been quiet with very good simple food and all for a good cause. I'm happy to report that if anything it has only improved with its new management, including a very pleasant young man who waited on us today. I had the breakfast sandwich on toast - the bread was perfectly crispy and there were ample, wonderfully cooked eggs with cheese. My husband had an omelette and really enjoyed it. I went here for a quick breakfast with some relatives from out of town and it was great! I love that all of their profits go to animal rescue and the staff (who are all volunteers) were friendly and overall made it a great experience. We all enjoyed our food, my aunt said their coffee was great. I had the praline French toast which was unbelievably good. It was a big serving so the rest of my table helped me clean my plate. How can I not like this place that has everything this world needs for a change! A great cause that has me tugging at my heart strings. There are days when one just want to do something real and this tops it. Everything from the decor to the service is a touching experience bar none. I am with an animal rescue in NJ, and though I live in the city, it is a trek to get out to Devon and IT IS WORTH IT!!! What an awesome, inviting place, that has excellent food to boot! Today I had a humongous very reasonably priced bowl of vegan chili, baguette with Cabot cheddar cheese, and a cup of french organic strawberry tea. It was all so yummy, and the ambience wonderful. They even have a shelf full of homemade and donated products, 8 of which I bought at Christmas, which made fantastic gifts. The owner and her daughter are so friendly and caring about cats that need rescue, that it feels like you are indirectly doing a feel-good rescue with each and every dollar you spend on this wonderful place. These lovely ladies put all of the money earned back into this wonderful non-profit business and the animals they help, right down to the tips earned for great service. I can't recommend this place highly enough. If you want great food, a sunny warm atmosphere, where you are helping to rescue cats in need, don't hesitate. I totally love the Black Cat Cafe. Full disclosure, I am involved with an animal rescue (not PALS, which operates this place) so I would probably love the Black Cat even if the food wasn't as great as it is. I have been there in the past for lunch and enjoyed it completely. Today, I took my mom, husband and a close friend for a special Mother's Day brunch and it was fabulous. Between us, we sampled the soup of the day, an apple, walnut, and bleu cheese salad, a ham luncheon entrée, southwestern omelet, and mushroom, spinach and goat cheese omelet. ALL delicious. And then there's dessert--a vegan chocolate mousse pie, lemon cheesecake, and exceptional carrot cake were all fantastic. I will need to go back often for the carrot cake alone! I adore carrot cake and it just doesn't get any better than their version. Home made and luscious. The place is adorable, small and very "French café." The service is endearing, all done by volunteers who are anxious to please when you ask them for something--just understand that you may need to ask; they are not pros. The chef is vegan and there are always delicious vegan and vegetarian choices, as well as plenty for us omnivores. Go for the food, go to support a great cause, but do go! read more

My friends and I visited the Black Cat Café this morning for breakfast. The majority of our experience was positive, food was of the quality for which we paid and the service was good. We asked our waitress if we were able to split our checks, to which she said we were allowed to! After spending a few moments with her figuring out how much everybody owed, we each paid and were getting ready to leave. Unfortunately for her, she began to talk about the experience she just had with us while we are still in the room. Her tone, facial expressions and distaste for us was apparent and we left feeling as if our experience at the cafe was tainted. I would hope that for next time she would suggest not splitting the bill if it was such an inconvenience. read more

My husband brought me here because of my soft spot for animal charities. I was so surprised that this cafe has been right under my nose and I didn't know about it! We went for breakfast. I had a egg sandwich. My daughter had french toast with fresh fruit, which she gobbled down. and my husband had an omelet. We all loved our meals! Was really disappointed during my last visit here. My main gripe is with the service. I understand that these folks are donating their time, but the last time I was there the service was awful! The food took a really long time, and when it did arrive, they forgot my companion's toast (he likes to make a sandwich out of his omelette). So we asked her for the toast, sadly, we had to ask several times because she kept forgetting us. Meanwhile our food was getting cold. I could hear other people complaining in the next room about how their orders are incomplete. I felt bad for the girl, she was really doing a lot of work and was having trouble juggling all the tables AND preparing bills AND working the register too. What made me kind of angry was that I could see a teenage boy just hanging around in the kitchen just standing there doing nothing the entire time we were there! He could have easily stepped in and assisted the girl! Not sure why he didn't. My companion has no desire to return to this place now, but I think its for a good cause and will try to convince him otherwise. On a positive note, my food was delicious. read more

This place is super cute, for a great cause and a must stop! I made reservations for a Saturday morning as I was not sure how busy they get. There is not much parking and they kindly let me park in the driveway. When I arrived the server let me pick my seat as it was a holiday weekend and not too crowded. I believe the servers are volunteers as all the proceeds go to a local animal shelter. Our waitress was great and could not have been nicer. They have soups, salads, sandwiches, quiche and breakfast on the menu. I went with the lemon grass soup with peas and rice- very tasty and great flavors. The waitress was kind enough to let us try the soup before ordering. They change the soups daily and also had a tomato and veggie chili. My friend is a vegan and she had lots of options and went with the tofu scrambler with spinache. I got a bagel sandwich on an everything bagel with 2 fried eggs, choice of meat and cheese. I did not realize Canadian Bacon is ham and ordered that instead of bacon my fault but still very delicious. The prices are not bad and also a donation! After your meal you must stop in the gift shop to pick up some cat toys or dog treats! read more
