The BELT, Detroit
Bruce K.

A once-neglected section of the city's historic garment district has been turned into a cultural destination by the lively, art-filled Belt in downtown Detroit. The Belt, which connects Gratiot Avenue to Grand River and stretches between Broadway and Library Street, was curated by the Library Street Collective and was opened in 2014. Its name honors the region's industrial history, which included the production of textiles and belts. One of Detroit's most picturesque and artistically vibrant public areas, it is now a pedestrian-friendly boulevard dotted with murals, light displays, and sculptures by both domestic and foreign artists. Beyond its aesthetic value, The Belt has developed into a center for local activities and nightlife. It is home to notable establishments including Standby, a contemporary speakeasy-style bar that was nominated as a semifinalist for the James Beard Award in 2017 and 2018, and The Skip, an outdoor cocktail bar with a tropical ambiance. Pop-up exhibitions, live music events, and even scavenger hunts have all taken place in the alley, allowing guests to interact with the artwork in fun ways. The Belt offers a captivating fusion of Detroit's gritty past with its forward-thinking creative energy, whether you're enjoying a drink, taking pictures, or just taking in the ambiance. I spent a nice time here, enjoying the artworks and just taking in the ambiance of this interesting and unique alleyway. [Review 963 of 2025 - 445 in Michigan - 24517 overall]

Very cool Alley area in Downtown Detroit with many shops, restaurants and bars, and a parking garage with very stylish mural art. There is awesome street art and sketches in the actual alley as well. Check it out!

Cute little kind of cabana seating inside the belt

The building itself is beautiful and just a short stumble from the Sheds in Eastern Market. My favorite night of all my experiences at RBHOA was the Secret Walls live mural competition. It was an amazing night where (4) teams of 3-4 artists painted murals to be judged at the conclusion of the night by the crowd. Amazing to see the artists at work. Being that the building and events are sponsored by Red Bull there is always all you can drink Vodka Redbulls (plus a few other selections, miller light, gin & tonic, etc.) Great experience every visit. This is definitely a spot I like to introduce slowly to friends from outside of the city.

The building is basically a gentrified warehouse and the first floor is where the residents work. If you go on a Saturday, you can hang out with the resident artists and talk with them as they paint, etc. After that, head downstairs to the gallery. There, completed works are displayed next to a tiny number on a thumb tack that you can use to look up each work's price if you are interested. You can browse the whole gallery in about ten minutes, but the art in invariably outstanding and I highly recommend it. It draws from a lot of College of Creative Studies talent in Detroit, and a lot of the art has contemporary and urban undertones. I've heard that they also throw parties about once a month. I can't go to the one in July, but will update this review as soon as I'm able to attend! Stop by the Red Bull House of Art whenever you are in the Eastern Market!

I have NEVER been to an establishment where she started piling chairs and tables an HOUR before the event ended!! Not to mention, we were not advised that we had to rent our own indoor chairs! The website says "everything included except linens." Which was fine, we had our own decorator who does it professionally. Some of our guests did not have the chance to get a second serving due to the wait staff filling their own plates! And, the food had to be catered in by one of their specified caterers. IT WAS NOT MADE ON THE PREMISES! The value for what we received was: NO LEADERSHIP as to where guests were to go (inside for cocktail hour.) The photographer had to make the announcement!! She had nothing to do with the venue. The coordinator did not attend the rehearsal, so it was done by the officiant. And the bride/groom did not have a traditional experience. The coordinator ruined the night of the bride/groom by complaining to THEM about how people were disappointed!! What she said and did was MORE THAN INAPPROPRIATE AND SO NON-PROFESSIONAL. I don't understand how she has the job she is assigned to! The cost was high, and the. The value was low! Unexpected costs and charges less than 2 weeks before a wedding is NEVER ACCEPTABLE! BECKY should not be a part of any type of dealing with customers.
