This was our lunch stop during our visit to Columbia State Park. Everything about the Bella Union makes you feel immersed in the time period. I should have asked more questions of our gentle waitress who was dressed in period costume, but we were so hungry it was all business on our end. Our lunch was so delicious. One of the few places to eat in the historic area of Columbia. The interior reminds me of how restaurants must have been back in the day. Lots of wooden furnishings, and the waitstaff are dressed like they were (I assume) back during the gold rush. When I visited on a busy Sunday, it took awhile to place our orders. I got the chicken wrap and BF ordered a hamburger with avocado and a bowl of chili. The chicken was a bit tough and the wrap had tons of onions. I ended up just eating the chicken and not even bothering with the spinach tortilla. The BF's "extra avocado" was pathetic! I don't even recall how much extra it cost to have it, but definitely not worth it. If it was me, I would have sent it back LOL. As soon as we walked inside "The Bella Union". From the tablecloths to warm wood tone table chair / floor - It was like being brought back to Gold Rush Town at the time of 1900. This atmosphere combined with good food - great service truly made for a special day at Columbia Historic Park * Crabby Patties - 3.99/5: well cooked . Crunchy soft patty goes well with sweet orange and fresh arugula n cucumbers. 1 star cut out for the sauce. I feel it missing some tastes, they can make it better one. * Watermelon Cucumber Salad - 5/5: Simply good looking. At first i thought i gonna order something else to complete the main meal because it's kind of small. However The fresh watermelon chunk burst with flavors of cucumber and creamy feta cheese which make this dish so fulfilling and satisfying. I didn't know watermelon could make a perfect dish. *Mediterranean Chicken Salad - 5/5: it is how it is. Big salad plate mix of vegetables. Soft tender chicken breast with feta cheese. "Again, From the moment we arrived, we felt welcome. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the service was attentive, and the food was exceptional. Three or four times a year, I visit Columbia State Historic Park and when I do, I usually eat at the Bella Union. I like the atmosphere, the decor, and the whole gold rush vibe. The staff is attired in period clothing, adding to the ambiance. The food is nothing to write home about, but it's good enough, and for a tourist eatery, I have to say that the prices are fair. When I visited the Bella Union yesterday, the first thing our server said was that if we needed to leave, we would have to use the back door, because they just locked the front door. I was grateful that a fire didn't break out, because I had no idea where the back door was located. When she finally returned, she waited for us to give her our FULL order before telling us that they were out of the first thing we mentioned. We had to make a quick decision, ordered something else, and waited while we watched dozens and dozens of flies zipping around the room and landing on tables, other people's food and on us. I tried not to think about what was going on in the kitchen. I excused myself to go wash my hands but was stopped by the server who told me that if I needed a restroom, I would have to go across the street (presumably through the illusive back door) because their restrooms (both of them) were out of order. There was a sign on the door leading to the restrooms that had clearly been there for a considerable amount of time that didn't say "out of order," but rather, "staff only." I'm no lawyer, but I'm pretty sure California restaurants are required to provide restrooms for their guests and I don't think restaurants located in state historic parks are exempt. I'll likely not return to the Bella Union, which is a shame considering how much I've enjoyed eating there over the years. But far be it from me to tell others what to do or where to eat. Eat there if you like. Just don't forget to bring your own fire extinguisher, hand sanitizer, porta-potty, and fly swatter. read more

I am blown away by The Bella Union Restaurant. We stopped here for breakfast and lunch during the Cinco de Mayo festival. Since we were vendors, this place was easy to find within walking distance of the main stage. It did not disappoint! They serve a variety of things including snack items and whole meals. All at fair prices. The waitresses were so friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. They even dressed the part to pay homage to this history of this building. I appreciated the hospitality, ease of ordering and scrumptious food! Definitely a spot to check out again when in the area! read more

Wow, we had just finished a hike and were tired and hot and hungry and thirsty. Stopped here on a whim. It was fantastic. We had a Monte Cristo ( if you know, you know) and eggs Benedict. Our waitress was great at first, but once she took our order, she never returned to help us at all. We had to flag down the waiter many times to get a to go box and our check. Twas the day before Easter and we were starving. We popped into the Bella Union Restaurant in Columbia State Park with no expectations, just hope for a decent breakfast. Sweet Miss Izzy met us at the door and allowed us to change tables in order to accommodate our various physical needs. So patient! Then she brought us truly the best coffee we have had in a long, long time. She made sure we had everything we needed to order. Going over the menu was a delight. The breakfast choices ranged from the traditional pancakes, eggs and sausage to a tempting lime and chorizo benedict. The prices were reasonable, especially considering the price of eggs right now. Our meals were outstanding. The chef knows how to make omelets that are tender, firm, and moist. That's an art. The fruit was fresh, the epic coffee kept pouring, and kind Miss Izzy was a delight. Not only did we feel like we received individual attention, we noticed that all the other patrons were treated the same way. Bella Union served a delicious meal to our group of 31, before we headed to the Fallon House. The decor was 1850s, since this is within Columbia State Park. The owner was very helpful in planning. We pre-ordered our lunches, including several with special dietary needs. The service was excellent, friendly and done in a timely manner.
