The shop is a huge old house with the warehouse attached out the back. I love exploring the house, wandering from room to room and discovering new treasures in every nook and cranny. Pedlars is the best mix of variety, affordability and quality on this strip. Kensington Antiques is the only place that beats them on price, but they don't have quite the range and their pieces don't tend to be in quite as good condition. Pedlars sells stuff for individual dealers (I think it's a consignment type arrangement), so there are two stages of quality assesment before the stock gets to the shop floor. They do auctions here too, which I imagine would be very worthwhile as it's at auctions that most furniture dealers pick up their goods before they inflate the prices to on sell to the end user. I have always found the staff really obliging and lovely here. They've allowed me to negotiate prices down and then happily manuevered a slightly too big table down the very narrow staircase for me at closing time. Customer service win!

These items are so unique, and for antique/collectable items, some of the prices are affordable to practically anyone, which I like. Not only do they specialise in items from France, Denmark and England, they also buy and sell local items. Also, they sometimes auction off the items they have for sale, which would definitely be something to keep your eye out for. So check out the website for more information on that. The outside of the store is eye catching, and one of the reasons I really wanted to venture inside of this store - I adore it.

They play Fresh 92.7 on the radio quite loudly without fail and have done this for the last 5 or so years I have been visiting them. I tear up the d-floor in my mind each time I duck in. Most of the larger furniture is out the back in the big attached shed. Some of it is rad and some needs more TLC than I can imagine giving it without a marriage certificate. It's also loads of fun poking through the rooms of books, prints, picture frames and general guff. Great place to find small tables, bookshelfs and I've even seen a few meat safes there.

However, like a lot of the more purist antiqueries it has a fascinating mix of absolute gems and absolute garbage, and a fine line run between the two. I don't go in too much for furniture, I'm more in it for the nicknacks, and Kensington Antiques has plenty of those. However, there is a bit of good furniture there, albeit of the smaller variety due to the limited space in the building. Definitely worth stopping in for a poke around if you are doing the Magill Road antique trail.

That won't happen at Scammell Auctions, because they just aren't that stupid, but you can bag yourself a sweet bargain! I started going to the Saturday Morning inspections (Auctions every Monday) a few months ago now, and soon bailed becuase mornings are meant to be slept through! Fortunately their weekly estate Auctions have their catalogues posted every Friday night with pictures! Even better yet the Monday Morning Auctions are on webcast and you can bid online.....from bed! SCORE!!!! The auctions usually have 1000 + lots with the first half being furniture and second half everything from cameras to cutlery, glasses and some really odd crap. Definately worth a look if you are after a dining suite, book shelf or the likes, or even if you want to try your luck at buying something cheap then flogging it on ebay! PS: The hours mentioned are the usual weekly inspection and auction times. They also have special auctions once in a while and are open during the week to pick up lots etc.

The couple who own the business really love their pieces, and admit to having great fun collecting them. Their beautiful golden retriever is always in the store, normally sprawled in the middle of the floor somewhere, and quite happy for a pat. The prices reflect the nature of antiques, though some of the pieces are not worth what is asked for them, because you could get something the same for less than half the price at an op-shop. They do however collect some beautiful pieces, like oriental side tables and gorgeous old 'bedroom couches' that have storage in the seats. The coolest collectable I've seen in here was a transforming, two-sided set of shelves which could become a chest, or a set of shelves with stairs along the side, which could then lock into each other and become a square shelf. You could access it from both sides so it makes a great room divider. It's made entirely from a high-quality wood with a beautiful polish. The owners had definitely fallen in love with this one, but they let it go, for $1,300. For little beauties like this one, the Buyers Market is always fun to poke through.

If you think you can grab a bargain at The Buyer's Market, think again. A lovely wooden dining table I saw cost around $600 and a nice set of outdoor glass furniture (a table and 2 chairs) were, all together, more than 1000 bucks. If you do have a bit of spare cash and are willing to spend it on some furniture, have a look here. Although the overall style is rather conservative, you'll find a few modern things like bar stools or glass tables among their selection .

There is a little workshop out of the back of the warehouse style building where some of the old furniture is being collected and some restored. I have been in this shop a few times over just a few weeks, and in that time - they had all new products to choose from, which made it another furniture adventure all over again. The staff are incredibly friendly and they are passionate about furniture, restorations and helping their customers. They even offer to deliver large items for free to homes within the area. The products range from pretty scruffy, to fully restored but all the prices are super competitive and many of the pieces are excellent quality. They have a lot of armoirs, dressing tables, wardrobes and desks. Many pieces are wood and most sorts of timber are well represented. The big warehouse-like store is well laid out so you can walk up and down aisles with very few problems. No fossicking required! Definately a place you must check out if you get into the recycled furniture caper and lack the time to actually attend the auctions yourself.

There were some really nice dining room tables which you knew would be good quality for (not a cheap) good price. What else did they have which made me fall in love? A jukebox. A jukebox with a USB port? Awesome. It was all lit up and flashing lights and playing good music and I just really wanted to take it home then and there. There are a lot of things here from the 19th and 20th century from places like England, France, and even Asia. Definitely worth having a look through.

The range of wooden furniture is extensive, and there are so many beautiful pieces in here. I let out a lot of "wows" and "ohhhs" as I went, wishing I had the house and money to fill my house with these pieces. One element that stood out was the range of clocks. I happened to be there right on 2pm, so I got to hear the clocks clang the time in all their different voices. If you're a lover of antiques, or just of beautiful furniture, this is a must visit.

The one thing that creeped me out about this store was the man who owned it (I'm guessing it was Peter Stapleton). He just sat in his chair and stared at everyone who walked in, with constant eye contact. I always feel weird when I walk into antique stores because I feel like the owners don't trust me, being a young person, and wondering why I'm looking at expensive items I could never afford, so the eye contact from this man didn't help. It also didn't help when he almost yelled at me for having my phone out (I was just replying to a message... not taking photos), but I understand that rules are rules. All in all, I wouldn't go back, though they have some pretty nice things.

Actually considered buying an item, but with that level of creepy surveillance and awful service I just decided I didn't need it that badly. Sad really, they have some beautiful timber items. Just be prepared to be seen as a petty criminal if you're young and not wearing your fanciest outfit.
