We decided to take my Dad to The Argyle House Restaurant, located inside Ibrox Stadium, for his 60th birthday. A lifelong Rangers fan, I was looking forward to surprising him with a Sunday afternoon carvery in the restaurant with views of the pitch below us. My Boyfriend was just as excited too!
It was a little difficult to find (although that could have been due to the snow, the very first day of that horrible snowy period we had at the beginning of December!) but once we had, it was easy to navigate our way up the stairs, or in the lift, to the restaurant area. It wasn't very busy when we arrived around 3pm, so we were seated very close to the carvery and given menus that had been headed specially for my Dad's birthday, as well as a lovely card on the table from the Club, lovely touches.
We ordered drinks, then ordered starters from the menu. I had a lovely breaded Camembert cheese with apricot chutney and salad. It was delicious and beautifully presented too. Other options included pate, soup and melon, all quite traditional and run of the mill with nice twists. We were then told to go as we pleased to the carvery selection, which was packed full of delicious meats and main dishes! As well as joints of roast beef, turkey and ham there was stroganoff, stews, beef in pepper sauce, curries, mussels in Garlic butter, salmon and steak pie, with a selection of potatoes all ways, veggies and sauces. I went for some turkey and some of the beef in peppercorn sauce with parsnips, courgettes, carrots and baby potatoes. Absolutely lovely, and just what the doctor ordered on a chilly Sunday afternoon. You could go up as many times as you liked but just the once was fine for me! Everyone was happily stuffed to the brim.
As we all know, desert goes into a different stomach compartment, one reserved for even the fullest of bellies to fit in a wee something, so we didn't hesitate in approaching the desert table. There was plenty to choose from, like small cakey type deserts decorated with fruit to a fresh fruit platter with coulis, and jugs of custard and cream. To be honest, I couldn't really tell what half of it was, and if I had one complaint it would be to make the deserts as traditional as the meal was; trifle, black forest gateaux, meringues perhaps. Still, I had some sort of custard tart with coulis which was nice, although if I'm honest it was just sheer greed! You could also have a selection from the cheese board with grapes, apple, sweet onion marmalade and crackers, but that was a no go for me!
Lunch was finished with tea or coffee and some lovely little Rangers mints, a big hit with everyone at the table. The staff (who were two waitresses, absolutely lovely and accommodating every minute we were there) brought out my Dad's cake and everyone sang happy birthday, a lovely end to a fab meal.
I would thoroughly recommend Argyle House Restaurant, especially if you're a Rangers fan yourself. You can book a table which is directly situated over the pitch with fantastic panoramic views (if there are under 6 diners) I actually quoted a Facebook discount code when booking the table so we got the meal, with two rounds of drinks for 7 people and a child for just over £100, absolutely outstanding value, so much so my Mum thought they had made a mistake! As a rule, the carvery lunch is just under £15 each.
We'll most certainly be back! read more
