Facility~ 5 Stars Dickhead OPD that arrested me~ 0 Stars…read more I spent a relaxing night here a few years ago for allegedly violating article VIII section 18-411 Code 1986, 94.01 of the city ordinance, better known as "off premises canvassing". A local night club hired us to pass out free drink passes but failed to mention the law preventing it. The officer wanted to make an example out of me to show the club owners they wanted the fliering to stop. I was given no warning. It was my first (and perhaps last) time in a place of incarceration, and I must say that I was rather pleasantly surprised with the experience given the circumstances. My memory is a bit hazy--you'll have to excuse me as this was quite a few years ago. The facility was newly built, in a concrete-metal style that is elegant in its spareness and utility. It is, however, lacking in a certain fluidity. My particular cell was absolutely spic and span. A polished concrete floor and stainless steel fixtures complemented a minimal, Japanese-inspired interior. In keeping with its status as a public facility, individual dwellings were completely sealed from each other with little flow or openness betwixt them. A rolled up mat normally provides an additional level of comfort to the metal bunks lined nicely up against the walls. Staff was generally efficient and friendly. My fellow detainee's had lovely words of encouragement as this was not their first offence. A new, soft gray blanket provided much needed warmth during the morning chill. Unfortunately, I was not able to turn off the fluorescent lights at my discretion. This, however, did nothing to disturb my inability to sleep because I was still in shock from the arrest . If I were to suggest one area of improvement--the food was severely lacking. In the morning, I was given a tray containing a carton of low fat milk, generic brand cereal, mushy grits and 2 slices of white bread. While the cereal was satisfying (the milk, in particular, was very refreshing for a very parched throat), the grits were inedible. The two slices of white bread, I later learned come with every meal. 42 pieces a week in fact. With all the fresh produce that is locally available in Orlando, I felt it would represent the city better if these were available to the facility's temporary dwellers.

My experience with Orange County Jail has been extremely negative. Many of the officers who control…read moreinmate movement and meal times appear to abuse their authority and treat inmates harshly. They often yell at and disrespect inmates instead of handling situations with professionalism. The meal schedule is also very irregular and inhumane. For example, breakfast is served around 6 a.m., but lunch may not be served until 5 p.m., and dinner as late as 8 p.m. This goes against the standard meal schedule that inmates should receive. In addition, I've encountered serious unprofessional behavior from staff, including being hung up on when calling administrative offices and receiving rude or dismissive treatment when trying to ask about inmate services. The people who work here are truly miserable and it'd be nice if there were some people who actually have empathy and patience to work here. There also seems to be a lack of fairness and transparency in how certain processes are handled -- for example, requests related to marriage or paperwork are denied for questionable reasons, such as claims about missing immigration stamps that have nothing to do with the marriage process. On top of that, they are very disorganized and you will get different information depending on who you ask. All the staff is NOT on the same page. Corporal Tinsley is an inconsiderate power hungry individual who is racist and not willing to accommodate or help out certain individuals with unique circumstances. Overall, the system feels broken, unaccountable, and deeply unprofessional. Orange County Jail needs oversight, accountability, and proper staff training to ensure inmates and their loved ones are treated with basic dignity and respect.

A couple of weeks ago we needed the help of the CCSO. A friend of ours was going through an…read moreextremely difficult time mentally and emotionally. We called CCSO to get our friend to the hospital because he needed help. The deputies arrived professionally and calmly. They were all extremely polite and handled the situation in a stellar manner as to not add any stress to the situation. They stood by and wait for our friend to finish eating. I try to stay in my apartment, but I wasn't able to sleep for several days at that point. Officer Bradley and another extremely obese deputy from the jail broke both my knees and several ribs. They then threw me naked in a cell for two days. Ever since that day I have had nothing but horrible thoughts. I have to leave the country. No choice. I hope they meet their maker and get judged.

One must call after you've been added to the list and merely give a dob and drivers license number that takes their system 15 minutes to update to add you. I spoke with Melissa at 8:24 am on my drive in to work and she says I have to update the system not telling me the process. Sharon if that's her name turns to Melissa to find this out and has a 6 minute argument in hopes of not having to do her job. I asked her if her salary was paid by the tax payers for which she response yes and tell her I know my family didn't matter to her but felt she should be the servant she's paid to be. She begrudging got my info added and then hung up on me. At 4:55 PM I call back Melissa answers I guess they got caller ID so Sharon don't want to talk or maybe that was it since it was 12 til and she would have to work 2 minutes over her was logged out and GONE. I ask Melissa if Mark Hunter was still sheriff and go over the fact their job is just like mine customer service and let them know how poor it was. If it weren't so sad it would be pathetic. Columbia county tax dollars wasted on two individuals that don't want to do what they are paid to do their JOB. I look forward to suggesting to the Sheriff that since the phone is automated why don't they get the 2 pieces of info DOB and DL tell the caller to call back I'm 15 minutes to get the visit and we can eliminate one salary all together lay her off or better yet schedule the visit via phone or web site and eliminate both since they don't want to do their JOB.

I had my first experience spending time at length in jail at the Suwanee County Jail. I did not…read morerealize how poorly people were being treated in jail. Many of the guards are repugnant. There is black mold covering many of the walls, The water is too hot or too cold, the food is edible but not healthy, it seemed like most of the meat wasn't real, there aren't options for vegetarian, gluten free, or kosher meals, the constant farts at night with no air ventilation in the dorms was disgusting, no Holy books other than the bible were allowed, a man wasn't allowed to practice his Muslim daily prayers in his dorm, originally inmates only got one mat to sleep on which I experienced because they refused to give me a second one for a week but once I got one it was still terrible and I now have lower spinal inflammation that is making it difficult to stand for long periods of time, the law library was not available to the inmates unless they were representing themselves, the reading library was terrible, the food portions were so small that if you didn't get commissary you'd start losing weight, the drinking water tasted disgusting, the food trays had crusted black mold in the scratch marks at the bottom of the sections, I had heard that the cups were dipped in sanitizer to clean them and not scrubbed, the dish washing machine had been broken for weeks, the air conditioning was way too low all the time, the air filters in the ceilings look as if they'd never been cleaned, inmates got 1 hour of recreation outside a week, they sand blasted the windows so you couldn't see out any more, I met one fellow being held illegally without bond, I met another who had double jeopardy committed on him. The phone system needed to be changed too, these days one can get an unlimited long distance phone line for $20 a month, inmates shouldn't have to pay $25 for 4, 15 minute long distance calls. More phones need to be installed and people should be entitled to a few decent length free calls a day. The phones were never sanitized. Apparently these were country club conditions compared to other jails. Our inmates need to be cared for not held, many were in on non violent charges. A wider variety of philosophy books could assist in the development of the people.
