What sets it apart from the countless other…read morenewsagent grocers is something that I think has been slowly diminishing from such places of late: friendly, chatty staff and a good selection of affordable sweets. Both aspects were the norm when I was a child, yet from my past experiences the norm these days has shifted to minimal customer service. Usually, I enter such places all happy and bouncy and when I get to the till I am met buy a scowl or a vacant stare and quite often the cashier will say absolutely nothing to me. Not so here, I was greeted by a little, cheerful old lady who returned my smile and was most polite. Back to the important matter at hand: sweets. Gone, seemingly, are the days of packets of gummy sweets in newsagents at pocket money prices. At least around Edinburgh anyway. Here, there was fizzy cola bottles, gummy bears, eggs and chips etc. all for under 40p. Furthermore, the chocolate bars were of a more reasonable price and there was heaps of multi-buy offers on things such as five bags of crisps for £1! Great. Aside from these, the shop was everything you'd expect from a newsagent grocery store.

Its quite big, theres always plenty of cheap fresh produce and meats, fish, ect. The lines at the checkout are never to bad as this place seems to employ enough people to be working all the checkout lines which is rare I think. Whenever you go to a massive Walmart type store I feel like theres never enough checkers ever. So this place got a star just for that alone. Otherwise your usual ASDA , also this one is clean as well which is also a positive thing. Keep up the good work giant cousin of Walmart ASDA!

Apparently this is one of only a hand full of such stores in Scotland, and hence I thought it worth…read moreof a review, especially seeing as its located in the centre of Penicuik, a small town south of Edinburgh whose's shopping scene, quite frankly, has seen better days. Needless to say, the large blue exterior, with clear windows offering gazes into the wonders within, intrigued me. As I entered, I was surprised to see the extent of goods available in this shop. It certainly can be considered a miniature department store. Clothes, groceries, clothes, toys, DVDs, car accessories, camping accessories, DIY, stationary..... the list is seemingly endless. I first explored the DVD section and was amazed to see many familiar, popular titles included in a two for a fiver deal. I ended up purchasing two reasonably priced reporters notepads at two for £1.50. The reason I have put this under "reasonably priced" is that the paper quality isn't that fantastic, and I observed that this was probably the case which a lot of the stock available. However, is that not expected from such a discount store? The stock was very well presented and the staff offered a friendly mannerism. Overall, four stars due to the fact that a lot of the products available aren't of great quality which may leave some disappointed.
