In fairness Portobello Road's Willy M recently went under an overhaul, introducing a revitalised rotisserie, butcher, delicatessen, etc., while extending the back area to accommodate new chillers and a lovely fresh bakers. Most notably the fresh produce area has been redesigned and laid out well, introducing a particularly good herb garden. The selection is probably the best I've seen. Offers are regular and fair. I particularly love timing it right to get all the discounted butchers, bakers and candlestick mak-- I mean rotisserie fare at the end of the day. Good for a monthly shop. Loses one star for not stocking Calippos anymore.

The staff span the gamut from surly to very friendly, so better than a lot of the big groceries, as you have to expect a certain range with so many people working there. Since I first put up my review Morrisons have moved with the times and now have a much expanded free-from section, including more frozen options, etc. Their Quorn selection is still limited (no steak strips!) and frequently sold out, but it's overall a much better place for vegetarian products now. Well done! I do still find that their layout can be confusing after almost two years here.

If you are walking you can go through one of the closes that runs off of the High Street. It's quite a small branch of Tesco so you don't get the range that you get in the newer massive stores. The shop is mostly food, cleaning and bathroom bits and pieces with a small selection of electrical items, books and DVDs. When I do go here for a regular shop I would expect to find more or less everything I look for, although the selection of organic food, especially meat is quite poor and I would go elsewhere.

The store is very large for the Sainsbury's I encountered while in Scotland in July 2019. I got a few items, the stand out of which as of writing this review on Monday 5 June 2023 remains a large cucumber. When I was a teenager I traveled to the Dominican Republic and found the best bananas I ever had. While in Scotland in July 2019, I found the best cucumbers I ever had. It had a cohesive rind/skin, tender, but not overly soft, interior, and not too many seeds. The vegetable itself was fresh and had a mild to intense cucumber flavor. The other items were tasty as well and perfectly packaged for disposal in a hotel room without drawing unwanted attention.

Situated in the Tollcross area of Edinburgh, Zain Halal Food Store is just a short walk from the city centre and so it is a convenient place to reach. Zain is a family run store which makes me more inclined to shop here. They sell a huge range of different food produce, including continental and Eastern European foods. Zain offer a wide selection of different herbs and spices, which would be difficult to find in the conventional supermarkets, so here is a fantastic place to go to buy exotic flavours. Halal meat meat is also available here, as well as fish, which is always incredibly fresh, especially their salmon - yum! The fruit and veg in the display outside the Zain Halal Food shop is always fresh, perfectly ripe, and best of all, very reasonably priced!
