I have to say that I had a VERY disappointing shop yesterday. I arrived at the store slightly after…read moreopening at 8am for a quick shop with the intent of being home by 9am (we live 10 minutes away). I bought a total of 45 items for a total cost of £84.02 I used (as always) the smart shop option in which I scanned every item that I bought and had them in two big shopping baskets. When I tried to check out and pay the system wouldn't let me. An assistant came along and said that she needed to check a few items. I have had this 2-3 times before when the rummage through the bags and check 6-10 items to make sure that I hadn't "forgotten" to scan something or was trying to steal something. This time she was told to check EVERY item which involved completely emptying both bags and checking every item and then putting everything back in my two oversized bags. I missed my meeting and worse I was made to feel like a criminal. Had I scanned every single item yes! Was it a good experience- Hell no! Did I feel like a criminal? Yes! Very upsetting- is this level of investigation really necessary?!?!
Sainsbury's is located just on the outskirts of Swadlincote town centre. It has a petrol station,…read morerecycling facilities and a decent sized car park. Not the biggest Sainsbury's, but it is due for an expansion in the near future, which will see the demise of the local Home Electric shop, as the store expands and the petrol is moved to improve access. The store although fairly small, has a good variety of products including a fruit and veg section, a meat and fish counter, a bakery and a delicatessen area. The store is well set out and always well stocked and tidy, which is the main failing of other local supermarkets. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the shopping experience is pleasant and relaxing. This Sainsbury's also has a small cafe area, with a variety of seating, including leather sofas. It has a small, but tasty selection of food and cold drinks. But I don't know what they do to the hot drinks, the coffee and tea taste so bad, they are barely drinkable! This is probably my favourite supermarket and we go in valiantly trying the coffee every week in the vain attempt it will get better, but it doesn't. In every other aspect this is a five star supermarket, but the hot drinks could be so much better.

I finally discovered Aldi after all these years and I must say that I like it (with one caveat -…read moresee later). The store is big and bright. The staff are hardworking and friendly enough - I don't think they have enough time to be as friendly and chatty as they are at the nearby Sainsbury's or Morrisons. The prices are good (significantly lower than the above stores) as is the selection. It is actually refreshing to see some new options both in terms of goods for sale and brands. Yes there are products (largely of German origin) that are different to the bigger stores but we have started experimenting a bit and some are actually better! However Aldi will never replace Sainsbury's for us since the latter simply has a wider selection and their own top of the line "Taste the Difference" brand products are hard to beat. We now see Aldi as nice, moderately priced supplement to the giants. I would never buy bread from Aldi - I like it fresh baked and crispy but the meats, produce and much of the dairy products are good. I do deduct a star because it always seems very busy (the prices!) and they rush you through the checkout at a crazy pace - they need packers as in the US (something I have yet to see in the UK). Will we be back - yes indeed (but also back to Sainsbury's 2-300 yards away Review #63 2019

On a corner plot, there is a good view of the local Ski Centre main slope. The outside of Aldi promotes products like snow shovels, de-icer, fire lighters or a range of competitively priced range of garden plants, depending on the time of year. Inside is a small section near the entrance selling a limited of magazines and newspapers. The rest of aisles are stacked to the rafters with great alternatives to more expensive brands. The shelves are constantly being replenished too and the whole store is smart and clean. Always busy, lots of people doing their complete shop here. We tend to flit from one supermarket to the next, but we get most of out fruit and vegetables from Aldi, great quality, at lowish prices, is always going to be a winner. We also like their smoked fish, dairy selection and occasional limited offers, though they prove very popular. An eclectic mix of other goods too like ironing boards, garden ornaments, safety boots and clothing, and lots of cooking utensil and pans. The tills at the end are extremely long, be warned though, the till operators send you produce through at lightning speed, its best to to take your basket/trolley to the back of the store and pack it at a more leisurely pace!

The store is clean, well stocked and the staff helpful and friendly. Lots of products (bread, ready meals, pizza) made on the premises. Despite it's medium size the variety and selections are great. There is an extensive cafe for breakfast and lunch with very reasonable prices, once the COVID pandemic is over - if that ever comes to pass! Speaking of COVID I find their prep and precautions of a somewhat lower standard than the nearby Sainsbury's which has become my "go to" for most things these days. If it's so good why not 5 stars - if they were to provide Internet for their customers then 5 gleaming stars could be a possibility :)

It has a large easily accessible car park and there are steps from Swadlincote town centre that bring you out right next to the entrance. It has a comprehensive range of facilities including cash points, a dry cleaning facility and a large cafe. The shop itself is vast, opening with huge fruit and vegetable area, flanked by a fishmongers and a salad bar. The fruit and veg here is easily the best in terms of quality and variety of the supermarkets in the area. This Morrisons also has a comprehensive audio visual section, which has a good mix of chart CDs, games and DVDs, along with some great bargains. A hot meats counter, a large bakery and a desserts area complete the back end of the shop. The home section at the centre of the shop, provides quality homeware for people just starting out in the first home, as well as more luxuriant items. The large butchers in the far corner serves a wide variety of different meats and cuts. As with any Morrisons, there are some great deals to be found on virtually anything and as a result make it a great place to shop. But what often goes unnoticed is that this store is always well stocked and kept impeccably clean. Attached to the store is a large cafe, which again is maintained well. It has a wide variety of cold and hot drinks, sandwiches, and snacks, as well as a constantly updated hot food menu. The food is tasty and inexpensive, but for me has an overeliance on chips, but this doesn't stop the cafe being extremely popular. The Morrison Petrol Station is a little way from the main store, selling petrol at a competitive price, with an added car wash. Access to and from the petrol station can be tricky at peak times though.
Don't see this everyday in the UK!!!!

The staff are friendly, helpful and above all they have a smile on their faces, which goes a long way these days. The aisles are packed with products and are stacked tall. All the usual range of items that you would find in a larger Sainsburys just slightly less variety. The fruit and vegetables, cold store, and wine and spirits have a particularly impressive range. In addition to all the usual items, there are fresh flowers, a well used cashpoint machine, National Lottery, and a good range of newspapers and magazines. Lidl has a great range of fruit and vegetables, at almost unbelievable prices. You get all the usual products you would get in any other supermarket, as well as other one off items like duvets, convection heaters, shoes and leaf blowers, to name but a few! Coming home from the US after decades one of the many things that have pleasantly surprised me in…read morethe UK is the quality of the offerings in the High Street supermarkets like Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Morrison's (jury still out on Tesco who IMO need to polish their image and focus a bit). But I digress - what about this Sainsbury's Local and why 5 Stars? Well the Stars come about as a combo of primarily the amazing concept for this little stores (and the fact that it is just around the corner from home!) - convenient, open 7am to 11pm everyday, a good selection of just about everything you may want from fresh produce, to meats and cheese, convenience foods, pet food, wine spirits and beer (hey it is dear old England!), fresh flowers, greeting cards, newspapers and more. And the wonderful thing - same price as at the big stores! You don't pay a penny for the convenience! Love it!! Review #46 2018
