Visited this ice cream shop after a trip down to Puerto Nuevo for some lobster! I am glad and thankful that they allow you to try their ice creams because a lot of shops nowadays don't want to provide samples anymore. They have a huge variety of flavors. This ice cream store reminds me of Baskin-Robbins because they have so many flavors to choose from. I counted about 80 different kinds! You'll need to figure out how many scoops you want and pay first, before choosing your flavors. We decided to get the extragrande, which comes with 8 scoops. After a lot of sampling, we ended up choosing the pico de luna, pina con chile, rompope, 2 guavas, Love's Prayer, fresa envinada, and higo con mezcal. I like that they have a lot of unique and exotic fruit flavors to choose from, but the texture was very icy. I will give them a solid 4 only because the amount of flavors they have is mind boggling, plus they were a pleasant respite from the heat of the day. Getting to this ice cream place required a long, weird walk through the dry and deserted business district (it was a Sunday, or maybe it's always like that, who knows?). In the 'culinary district' we passed a lot of fancy looking restaurants, but also a Burger King and a TGIFridays, which made us laugh. Tepoznieves itself was in a giant dusty lot shared with a Sam's Club, and crowded with people playing dominoes and eating ice cream. The system here is sort of confusing, so pay attention, because I got frustrated with it when it wasn't clear: First you go to the counter on the left and decide whether you want a cup or a cone and how many scoops. You pay, and they give you a card. Then, you take the card to the massive ice cream counter, get your samples if you need help deciding on a flavor (there are probably at least 50 flavors), and order the flavors of ice cream there. The guy doing the scooping will take your card, scoop your ice cream, and hand it to you. I was fascinated by the ice chest of flavors that had airy, angelic names like 'The Kiss of [some god] or Snow of Rose Petals (see picture for more exact descriptions). I ordered one scoop from that section that was made from peach, mango, and pine nut. Then I went all the way to the other end and ordered a scoop of cajeta, because goat caramel is just about my favorite sweet. The texture has more ice crystals and less cream than I'm used to, but the flavors are subtle and so obviously natural. The cajeta was indeed goat caramel, which was a relief, because in lots of places in the states it's just regular cow's milk caramel. As for the mango peach pine nut, it contained lots of pieces of dried, frozen fruit, and had a pine nut cream base, which worked together better than it sounds like it did! read more

We came here since it was close to where we were staying. None of the workers spoke English so the Google Translator app came in handy. So I went to the cashier and pick what I wanted. 2 scoops of cones and 3 scoops in a waffle bowl. The cashier showed me the bowl to make sure I was ok with it before proceeding. I was handed tickets that said 2 scoops of cones and 3 scoops bowl and use that to get flavor you want. There are a lot of flavors, but by the cashier, there is a menu with English translation of what it is. I tried Angel's Kiss and rose petal. Neither tasted like anything particular. Coconut tasted like coconut. The server mistook orange for horchata. That was ok. Oreo didn't really taste like oreo. The lot had a gate on it so I just opted to park on the street. Coming from the US, price is very reasonable. But I don't think I'll be coming back even if I'm near the area. All the flavor tasted like sweet sugar but nothing really defining or special. read more

Tepoznieves is a classic if you are in the Mexico City area. Nice location in Tijuana with all the expected flavors. A little overpriced if you consider the amount of ice cream they give you. But good service, you can try multiple and they have tables if you want to spend some time there. I have been here twice with the Turista Libre taco tour and to be honest, I was.not impressed. Though the place is very cute and does indeed have several unique flavors, I thought the size of the ice cream scoops were extremely small and the ice cream itself was just not good quality. Excellent flavor selection, but the texture left something to be desired--at least, in the flavors I had (pistachio and cajeta).

You can't go wrong with this place EVER! It has the BEST ice cream ALWAYS!!! It has flavors from the traditional vanilla, chocolate, etc to the awesome ones like Gansito, elote, queso, Mexican "tunas" and even some with ron and tequila. Definitely our family favorite ice cream shop! A must try when you're in Tijuana. read more
