When we found out we were pregnant we decided to utilize baby and company, which ended up being a terrible experience. We decided a few months into the pregnancy that we were going to have a home birth. We found Tanya though Facebook and I could not have asked for a better blessing. From her initial encounter to the birth, Tanya gave 110%. She is very personable and takes into account all the patients wishes in regards to their pregnancy and birth plan. I am a Doctor myself and I can tell you that there is no better midwife in Tennessee than Tanya Green. She took our negative experience and turned it into my wife's dream of having a home birth. Her assistant Liz was also phenomenal. I would give Tanya and her staff all the stars in the world if I could. She is highly recommended and truly cares for her patients. If you are wanting to have a home birth, there is no one more suitable in the area than Tanya!

She then proceeded to say that "God is leading her" to shut her practice down immediately... I am a Christian myself, and in Divine Scripture it says to FULFILL YOUR VOWS. This is taking the Lord's name in vain. She then proceeded to recommend us to other local midwives, one whom had so many complaints against her. Several others with no availability since I was already so close to my due date. And the other do not even service our area. Madness. Since this occurred I have heard of several women Tanya has dropped from care over very minor things, she is very fickle and flakey, but eager to keep your money. Ironic that we had paid her only a few days prior to her suddenly shutting down. Praying this woman never goes back into business.

I could not say more wonderful things about Susie! I am so happy that I found her and chose to have…read moreher as my midwife. She was amazing from the beginning. She has a wealth of information and experience. She has such a vast tool box of tricks of the trade, remedies, soothing techniques and resources. She really helped me in all areas and took a well rounded approach. She helped me problem-solve and provide ways to combat nausea, maintain a healthy meals for me and baby with the right nutrients, she had great recommendations from prenatal vitamins, natural remedies and diet modifications to other providers for part of the pregnancy and birth team. She really listened to me during each session, and helped not only me, but also my family. She talked about how to help my toddler transition into having a baby around, and talked to my husband and answered his questions and also gave me ways to set me up for success in the postpartum period. She and her team (a nurse and a doula) came at 37 weeks to help me set up the birth room and walk through my birth plan. It made me feel so at ease to know that everything was ready and we had a plan for baby. I felt very confident in their care and attention to detail and particularly listening to my desires and wishes and being sure they understood what I wanted. When it came to birth day, she came to my house in the early stages of labor to check in. She was always available via text message or phone call throughout my whole pregnancy, labor and postpartum. It was so nice that I was able to labor at home, but she was available the whole time for me. She gave me things to try throughout labor to help me progress and have the baby well positioned. She did a wonderful job being calm, collected, helpful, but also very professional and knew when she needed to intervene and when she could let me labor. She also was very helpful to my husband, explaining to him what he could do. He loved her just as much as I did, and loved that she talked through things with him, so he knew how he could be helpful to me, and understand what was going on. When I had postpartum complications, she came to my house immediately to check in on me and make sure everything was okay. She always made sure I understood what was happening and why, which, being an anal/cerebral person also in the healthcare field, I very much appreciated. Susie went above and beyond what I would have ever expected and made my pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum experience so comfortable and beautiful! I am forever thankful to her! I will not only use her for my next pregnancy and recommend her to everyone, I also consider her my wise, sweet friend and mentor.

All while in labor with my first, possibly only, child. I had read hours upon hours about my risks (low) she read the front page and none of the linked studies on vaginal birth after fibroid removal surgery then used fear mongering to scare my family. When I disagreed she made up a diagnosis without any labs, signs or symptoms and forced medication into my IV while I slept. I probably had toxicity based on symptoms, but no labs were checked for another 12 hours. They withheld significant information from me, making informed consent iffy at best. Because of the medications I was given I have almost no memory for 36 hours, including the birth and first day of my little one's life. It is devastating. Because of their interventions I had a massive hemorrhage a few hours after birth, where an emergency team was required to stop my bleeding (~2.7L between surgery, a small hemorrhage, and the severe hemo). I struggle with severe birth trauma, postpartum depression w/suicidal ideation, PTSD, and body dysmorphia (from the unwanted and completely unnecessary C-section). This practice does have some very kind people, but you don't get to choose who you get. I have heard a few reports of lovely births...follow your gut and hire a doula for added support/protection.

The business of birthing is a crazy arena…read more On one hand, you have the assembly-line production of a place like Baptist, which is set up to crank out babies regardless the costs to the mother. Sure, it has pretty rooms and massages, but it is all about the c-sections and interventions. On the other hand, you have a group like the Vanderbilt Nurse Midwives. Really the focus there is on the mother and child, and their safety, not making sure the baby comes out so the doctor can hit his tee time. And the really cool thing is that they are totally impartial and non-judgmental; no matter what way you choose to have your kid, they have your back. The rooms at Vandy may not have rich Corinthian leather recliners, but if something goes wrong, you're right there in one of the best hospitals in the country. With our first child, they were fantastic from an education and reassurance standpoint. I think one thing that is truly missing from medical professionals nowadays is the ability to empathize and frankly have a conversation. Not so here. Everyone that I have met through this practice has been amazing. My wife's primary nurse midwife is Linda Hughlett who has been a fantastic resource of advice and guidance for my wife. For the birth of our first child, my wife was in labor for 41 hours, so it was kind of a rollercoaster ride. It took so long that we went through two of the nurse midwives, Emma Gensert, who managed to be energetic, positive and supportive for over 12 hours, and Soheyl Asadsangabi who came in for the end with all new positive energy to help my wife get the job done. They were a great team, working with the nurses and our doula seamlessly and very flexible when the plans changed and my wife decided to get an epidural at hour 36. With our second kid, we had the amazing care of Melissa Allred and a nurse midwife in training, Sarah. While we were really only in their care for around four hours, it was wonderful how positive and supportive of us they were during the process. I can never thank them enough and with their help, my wife ended up delivering unmedicated! The Vanderbilt Nurse-Midwives were also recently featured in a new TLC series, "Baby's First Day". So, if you want a birthing experience without an agenda, centered around the needs of the mommy and baby, combined with a level of care that unusual in this day and age, this is the way to go. Oh yeah, and dads, get a doula, at least for your first one. It's the best thing you can do as an impending parent, short of buying scotch.

We interviewed quite a few doulas in Nashville and really fell in love with Amandine. Not only was her French accent soothing and comforting, she was warm and treated me like a sister. During birth she helped navigate the hospitals standards and advocated on my behalf during labor so I could have the birth I wanted. My husband really loved having a resource to lean on during labor and she gave us space when we needed. She was so kind to provide notes about the birth in the case I wanted to write my son's birth story, and offered a lot of help postpartum when I had trouble breastfeeding. Mama Moon is the best!

Before my due date, I would periodically meet with her, and she was always able to share helpful pregnancy advice. She also gave us a crash course in what to expect for L&D. She also gives great prenatal massages! Once I went into labor, I was in constant contact with her that day up until we were ready for her to come and meet us at the hospital. I ended up having a complicated and scary delivery. Everything worked out luckily in the end. Amandine was there every step of the way to lend a hand and comfort us during the process. She also is great at helping you relax and breathe and a great coach during the pushing stage. Having a doula as an extra partner in the process really helped my husband focus on me and the process too, as having her there took a lot of stress off him. For postpartum services, she was available once we were all at home to help both during the daytime and at night. This is super helpful when you are trying to recover and just need that extra nap and extra set of hands to help with laundry, dishes, small errands, etc. She also is so gentle and experienced with babies. I highly recommend Amandine if you are looking for a birthing and/or postpartum doula!

At first, my…read morehusband was a little hesitant (let's be honest so was I) but we both quickly realized the professionalism and great competence of the nurse midwives after seeing them react perfectly when I passed out during a blood drawing at one of my first appointments. After I gave birth, my husband told me he was brought to tears by witnessing the power of women coming around each other during labor. My first appointment was virtual, and Alys answered every single question and concern I had about their safety protocols and their statistics on transfer rates with confidence. I asked all of the hard questions and was impressed by their protocols. Around six weeks, I thought I was having a miscarriage and Emily answered my frantic call to the birth center. She was the most compassionate and calming person and walked me through that. She got me an appointment the very next day to ensure everything was okay with the baby. I failed my first gestational diabetes test, and had to do the second test that had four blood drawings. I got to lay in one of the king-size beds in one of the birthing suites. I got to take a nap in the bed And I felt like I was in a hotel room. During my actual labor and delivery, It was way harder than I thought it would be. But having the fortune of laboring in a space, that was so comforting and personalized it made a big difference. I would not have made it without my personal Doula or the nitrous oxide(!!) they provided at the Birth Center. My daughter had the cord wrapped around her neck, and Melan acted swiftly to somersault her so that she wasn't hurt. I had a second-degree tear and Melan stitched me perfectly. After birth, my daughter needed some extra monitoring at Vanderbilt, and Jenissa personally walked us into the hospital and got a situated in our room with the nurse at the Vanderbilt Hospital. Never once did I feel shame for my weight, for any questions that I had, or feeling like I was imposing. At every step of the way, I was empowered, encouraged and taken care of with the utmost care. I relied on the nurse midwives to help me come up with a birth plan, and take care of myself and my baby with evidence-based statistics. I am so grateful for every single interaction I had at the Vanderbilt Birth Center and I wish Every woman had the opportunity to experience a tender, loving, professional care I received here. I am so torn since I love the idea of the birth center and having a nautral birth. However, the process there feels so systematic now and I feel like I was treated like a statistic than a person. Also, there are midwives on call, but you have to go through a call center to get to a midwife and I have never been able to get anyone on the phone. They always need to call back hours or days later. It is frustrating to not be able to talk to an actual person who can talk and having to give your personal information over and over again. Overall, I do not feel like they provided the help needed at crucial times for me. I would recommend going elsewhere for more hands on care and for someone more in tune with your needs. Pros: I love how supportive they were when I needed to have my blood drawn. They have aromatherapy and encouraging nurses. The birthing rooms feel like home and have a lot of nice things to use to help aid giving birth. There classes are also very informative. Cons: Gave misinformation numerous times and didn't bother reading my file on my first pregnancy when I came in pregnant again. My first pregnancy was a bit traumatic (leading to a hospital transfer and forceps) and I feel like they could have handled the matter more delicately. They also have much stricter rules about COVID than most doctor's offices. (Need to wait outside until someone comes to your car and takes your temp.. No one allowed in for appointments with you, etc) They have a very high transfer rate to the hospital and it is a little scary needing to get in a car and have your husband drive you to the hospital mid delivery.

Heidi is the best of the best!…read more In our meetings prior to labor and delivery, she was easy to talk to and very supportive of my decisions and natural birthing goals. Heidi allowed me to share with her some of the trauma that I had from my first birth and prepared me for what to expect the second time with a Doula and being able to make informed decisions. The resources she shared with me (evidenced based articles, list of what to pack, how to cope with pain, Bible verses, etc.) all helped to prepare me mentally, physically and even spiritually for my upcoming "marathon". And once that "marathon" arrived, she was on point with everything, including her wisdom of when I should leave for the hospital. Thank goodness for that because my labor progressed very quickly! Once at the hospital, Heidi really orchestrated and worked in unison with my Midwife and my other support people. She kindly instructed my Mother and Husband how they could help and even could tell my water was about to break and warned the staff so I didn't make a complete mess of the room (It was in fact Christmas Eve, so one less thing to clean up was an added plus.) Heidi coached me through every step of the way and said just the right thing to motivate and comfort me to keep going. My husband held my hand and was by my side, while Heidi helped with technique to ease pain and her words were exactly what I needed to hear to stay strong. In short, Heidi was an answer to prayer. I highly recommend her to anyone expecting, no matter if it's un-medicated, medicated or a planned C-section.
