I sent to Perfect Pastry an email inquiring about the possibility of making a custom birthday cake with a specific layered interior filling, and a custom inscription on the top of the cake, and a card. Nermina responded the very next day with detailed information and a price. Even with a nine hour time difference Nermina was extremely responsive, and detail-oriented. I was also able to request a specific two hour delivery window. The cake arrived at my in-laws' apartment exactly on time. The cake was visually beautiful, and the filling was exactly as I had requested. My wife and her family reported that it was one of the most delicious birthday cakes they had ever enjoyed! The cake was indeed perfect, and so was the experience in terms of inquiring, ordering and executing. And I bake all the time, something extremely hazardous to my diet haha ...but thats also why I'm extremely critical of baked goods. Having tried several bakeries in The Netherlands I've come to the conclusion that it's extremely rare to find good cupcakes. They are either stale or the icing isn't right or just plain ol' BLAH! But that wasn't the case at VAN NESS I've been trying to eat their cupcakes for a while now. They get sold out rather quickly so one has to go sometime before 3-4pm if you want to have all the flavors. So we walked into this tiny store full of excitement and tried four different flavors of cupcakes (chocolate lava, red velvet, pistachio and chocolate vanilla) and boy o' boy was I pleasantly surprised, they were EPICALLY delicious. They were moist and full of flavor and honestly the best I've had in this country for sure! I totally understand why they are sold out before the store closes and I was so impressed to taste every flavor and their icing was divine. So yes go there, go there tomorrow! I know my cupcakes and have been to countless shops in the US and Europe and Vanessa's are some of the best. I love them so much I actually wrote about them on my blog! The shop is super cute and simple. Simplicity is under-rated in my opinion. You already have all the options just sitting on the counter staring at you and the prices are overhead. Another reason that I love the cupcake stands-on the counter-behind plexi glass-is that it's obvious what's still available. I'll admit, there will be a special discount or pop-up flavor and I'll be lazy and wait to go. Then she's sold out! I mean, good for her! But I can just walk in and see what flavors are left. No more asking what's in stock! Simple. Oh, and every girl I've met that works there is SO nice! I don't see the bad Dutch service that people talk about. So far, every cupcake I've tried tastes amazing and just makes me want to try more of them. The girls at the counter are incredibly helpful and will take the time explaining what kind of flavours you can expect from which type of cupcake. It's a reasonably small place, so I wouldn't recommend it for groups, but it's very nice to sit inside when you're with a friend. They also have a few tables outside, but in my opinion it felt kind of uncomfortable since you're pretty much sitting in the middle of a street. *They also do delivery! :)

This time we ordered the famous red velvet cake, New York cheese cake, lemon meringue cake and a full chocolate cupcakes (forgot the exact name). It was all so yummy and filling. You can easily share a red velvet cake with a friend. The staff is friendly. It is a nice place to sit. However it can be cold. Everytime when the door opens the cold comes in. It would be nice to have a curtain in front of the door so the cold won't come in. But overall we had a good experience at Drie Graefjes. When you're in the neighbourhood you should definitely stop bu and have cake. You can't reserve so come early, especially on a Saturday.
