We were members for several years, then decided to leave after my children's B'nai Mitzvah. The…read moreexecutive director made me feel uncomfortable (often gazing down at my chest when talking with me), was minimally accommodating when we were dealing with the B'nai Mitzvah logistics, and in general, conveyed a rude and controlling tone via email. Upon checking their website recently, I thought this person had retired (as he's not listed on the website). Unfortunately, that's not the case. To add to our experience, on the day of my kids' B'nai Mitzvah, the cantorial soloist's husband (& former synagogue president) allowed our photographer to enter the building earlier than when we were allowed in. Upon opening the door for us, he glared at me. Very strange behavior.

A tremendously welcoming community with more activities than you can imagine. We moved here just 2…read moreyears ago and now many of our friends are from this community. The Rabbi is very creative in making everything interesting and adding something a little unusual to many of the programs. Rabbi and many members of the congregation started a local Interfaith group inviting everyone to learn about other faiths and to all work together to make a better community. My grandkids love the Sunday School and look forward to going every week. A terrific place for all ages.

Temple Israel is a liberal egalitarian conservative synagogue…read more As compared to other conservative synagogues, they tend to support Israel strongly, have Avot v'Emahot, and have a normal (not triennial) Torah reading. The clergy is very warm, and the members are very active. There is a very strong connection among the congregation and when we visited originally we found them to be very welcoming of strangers, as opposed to other synagogues I've been to where the people have been a bit more cliquey. There's a strong youth presence, which is fantastic. All in all, would recommend a visit if you're in the area and need someplace to go to shul.

Although I feel that person really got it wrong, much has changed since then - we have a new rabbi, new programming, and lots of enthusiastic new members, adding to our already wonderful community. There is so much going on at Kerem Shalom, for adults and for families with young kids, and the atmosphere is welcoming and warm. and yes, it is very down to earth and there is still a lot of beautiful music.
