"Your sermons are so spot on they almost make me want to stand up in the middle of them and shout "damn right, man!" This year was the best of them, you captured the esoteric crisis I and others have with religion being form over substance and not relating to the need to find a source for "nutz and bolts" guidance on the path to enlightenment or even in stemming the tide of frustration experienced by us in a world where accountability for ones actions becomes more and more scarce. The members are incredible nice and everyone is welcoming. It definitely feels like the community you would expect from any house of worship. I was not raised in a church, came to have faith only in my adult life, and it is not this church…read more Given this, here is a more objective review of my wife's church since I'm actually not a member at this time. ;-) Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd is a great community to visit, and even join if you feel called. The Pastor is young and energetic, while honoring the traditions of the Lutheran faith. The people are generous and friendly, with many great ways to reach out into the community and world. The sanctuary is open and welcoming. As with most communities of faith, one needs to look at a couple different perspectives to find a spiritual home. Good Shepherd offers a solid Lutheran liturgy, honoring the tradition while worshiping God. The community is also very dynamic, with a great eye for the larger Christian community. Their gifts are shared within the community and neighborhood with Bible studies, neighborhood party / rummage sale, and on site preschool. The larger, regional community is served by giving gifts to families in need for Holidays, serving with the Night Ministry in Chicago, and being an initiating member of an Interfaith Mission, serving communities within a few hours' drive. They also have a strong relationship with Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI), further serving the larger community, and having a international reach such as addressing malaria in Africa. No one pretends to be perfect, everyone is open about their struggles, and all are accepted with open arms. The thing I like best is that the church is small. When I walk in, it's like Cheers...a place where everyone knows my name! I've made several really close friends that are now like family to me. My kids have a solid understanding of the bible just from going every Sunday morning. Some of the kids have been going with them since they were infants! Great place for families with kids.
