To obtain more information, we needed to stop at the valuable visitor's center first. There, the woman in charge, Brandy, gave us a plethora of information but urged us to visit this dynamic museum first to get a more well-rounded understanding of the area. It was easy to find--the classical structure is a former armory & home of the New Mexico National Guard. Following the posted directions, we entered this building from an easy ramp down, through the door into a brightly lit space. Immediately, we were greeted by the caretakers who gave us a map and ushered us on into the displays, saying "Everything here has been donated." What an amazing array of donated history, made even more impressive with how it had been arranged--not a bit of space was wasted, even items hanging from the ceiling. Yet it was not chaotic or did anything seem out of place--very impressive. I was particularly interested in the military room, specifically with the Norden Bombsight, which was noted in "Unbroken". Another area of great interest was the lace & quilt room on the second floor (take and elevator or steps with good handrails), where the word "TAT" has an exact meaning related to the intricate patterns formed in delicate lacework. I work with numerous high school students about where they see their future, and a some of them are quite interested in working "tat" or "tattoo". Now I'll be able to give them a bit of a connection, that "tat" also describes very precise clothwork, which looks like skin tats. Anyway, this museum is FANTASTIC and free; run by volunteers and donations. We both made deposits in the box. Adjacent to the building is the Veterans' Park, especially for the Bataan Death marchers who came out of Luna County; these, along with other military members are remembered and honored. I was impressed with one of the armaments on display is a "touch" unit, and saw a pair of children sitting in the bombing seat of a howitzer. Ironic that in war/combat, it is an instrument of death; but here in a small space of honor, it is an instrument of joy, delight, & distraction. I loved it. This is certainly 5-star, and gets my "Wheel of Approval!"

Is that... a dinosaur? Yes, yes it is…read more Voiers "Pit" Park used to be an gravel pit that was mined and discarded. When the city took it over, they turned much of it into a modern amphitheater and included a mile-long walking trail (woo hoo!) and added a small gated area with several dinosaurs. Lots of parking, some picnic shelters and a nice view of the "lake" that filled in the gravel pit. [Review 17483 overall - 92 in New Mexico - 1001 of 2022.]

Rock hunting here was way more fun than we expected. You find one rock and think, "Okay, this is…read morethe perfect one," then two minutes later you spot another even cooler piece nearby. It turns into a treasure hunt fast. Love that Rockhound State Park lets you literally take a little piece of nature home with you. We grabbed a few really cool rocks and had such a good time exploring the area. Definitely a fun and unique stop if you're passing through the area.

He met us in his John Deere golf cart late after sunset and took us to our assigned campsite. I expected park personnel to be off the clock at that time of night, but he was waiting for us when we arrived. The park was very clean and well maintained. We rock hunted the first am and found the park rock trails pretty much picked over for cool rocks to collect. But still ended up with a lot of rocks to take back to Texas. It is a beautiful park with dramatic temperature changes from day to night due to the much lower humidity than Austin. Sunrise and sunsets were dramatic and beautiful. We very much enjoyed the lake and when our check out date arrived we're sad to call our visit to an end.

It would be a great place to detox from a long drive or a quick spot to be thankful of the rare spots of beauty. Mimbres Pottery is found regional in the area. These huge pots are great way to commemorate that and demonstrate the pots beauty and detail . The pots are a part of a walking tour that highlights all the history of a classic Main street.

It is on the site of an area where several million years ago, a volcanic eruption threw numerous large boulders on to the landscape. The park has driving areas and hiking trails around and between these boulders. We spent several hours waking through and had lunch in the park at the picnic area. We had a good time exploring the park and recommend a visit if you're in the area.

In between the rocks are plenty of oak trees and shady spots where you can get out of the sun. There are plenty of beautiful views as well. On 01SEP2023, I cycled…read moremy "FrankenBike" ~90miles/144kms from the Eastside of El PasoTX to ColumbusNM (¡both locations share the border and populations with MAGNIFICENT MEXICO!) with the intent of overnighting at an electric site (so I can recharge the eBatteries)--something I had done four years prior with my first excellent eBikeKit.com assisted CruzBike (model S40). Anyway, after successfully arriving in Columbus and enjoying a much-needed replenishment/rehydration at Borderland Cafe, I quickly repeated my long ago action. I secured the closest electric site #14, plugged in my heavy duty cord & three chargers, put $14 cash into the pay pipe envelope and settled onto my Z-rest for a pleasant night under slightly cloudy skies. These scraggly clouds barely contained the brilliantly full super "blue" Moon! One major difference was that the septic system was under repair, thus the excellent water closet were replaced by well-stocked/clean portapotties. I found the grounds & displays adequate and had no need enter the museum--my focus was to keep on cycling, as I anticipated a biketour through 2-countries/5-states. However, nutritional needs to cycle the second morning we're not from my usual brekkie stop, Irma's Cafe. I met her as she was leaving to visit family in Arizona, but she easily directed me to the American Legion Post 1916. There, I enjoyed a full bacon & eggs brekkie/coffee/juice/toast/muffin for only $7usd! Unfortunately, I was at my next destination 45-miles/72-kms further West on NM9 (Columbus Road) in HachitaNM when "mechanical issues" (flat tyre) began to make me re-think my biketour. In fact, because I had only carried two new tubes/tire, my concern was getting stuck somewhere really remote (¡and there is a LOT of desolate territory out here in the "¡Hidden Gem of the World, Crossroads of North America, anchored by El Paso, Cd. Juárez y Las Cruces!") that I decided to retrace my route back to El Paso, overnighting again at electrical site #14. Since it was Labor Day Monday, no eateries were open and neither was the gas station. My problem was needing clean/freshwater, and that was questionable here at the park. To say the least, I was deeply appreciative of the Dollar Store, where I bought two gallons of bottled water, along with several "lunchables" that would keep my energy going on the 90-mile/144-kms return. [¡Sadly, I had a second blowout partway into Doña Ana County, and had to be rescued by my much-better half!] It goes without writing much more what a great overnight this park and community make for travellers. It definitely has my coveted "iWheel of Approval!"

I spoke to head guy after a few days and he mentioned the weed problem was due to the monsoons (but they arrive every year), to visit the museum you must ask one of the park rangers to open it up, and only one of the two bathrooms is open due to the slow summer season. There was a total of four camps daily. Still a great place to camp, I just hope I do not see a further decline on our next outing there.

This was a destination day for us from Silver City. 2 hours plus one way…read more Well worth it. Built with stone and mud and still standing. They lived in the natural caverns that they walled in. And then divided again into rooms or areas connected by openings. One picture is a remaining crib to retain cultivated corn, now all husks. But corn then was small, about the size of a first finger. The area parallels a flowing creek that supported a clan group of about 60. They walled it in over 5 years and remained about 30 years until the 24 year drought and left as a group. This is only for public guests that can walk and climb. A free day. Uneven terrain and at least 3 ladders to peer into a room or living Area Excellent 1/2 day.

A very nice improved path with several bridges crossing over the stream…read more Easy access to downtown and the visitor center as well as restaurants and shops. My two sons and I spent hours walking the trails and reading the graffiti. It's an easy way to kill time while exercising.
